To put on my analytical hat for a moment:

Much of what we think of as humor is an emotional release of tension, said tension usually arising from a contrast between expectations and reality. In previous WTs, Morgan's monologues have been broken up and therefore contrasted with Graham's interjections. Even when he was alone in "One of Us Has to Change", there were lots of quick cuts and surprise reveals.

Morgan's story was continuous, rather than intercut, and kept to a single train of thought and content. It's hard to make monologues funny for just that reason - professional comics have to build a mood before they break out the real content, and they usually have preceding acts warming up the crowd beforehand. This story was about all buildup without payoff, but the story itself was payoff without buildup, if you see my meaning. It was interesting, and thought-provoking, and amusing, but not guffawing-laugh-out-load funny, for that reason. The ending was, not exactly telegraphed, but inevitable given the structure of the preceding narrative, and that's hard to make funny, too.

Also, no cool people masturbate. James Dean didn't masturbate - as soon as he hit puberty he was surrounded by the ladies who gleefully fulfilled his every whim. So Morgan lost some cool points by not being like James Dean and all the cool people in the audience.

I'm glad to see experiments and risks being taken with the Whatever Thing. Trying sophisticated and different things is worthwhile even if they're not uproariously hilarious all the time. I know I enjoyed it.

This is tremendously interesting. I think it is possible to say that toilet humour (there's a better term for it, but I've forgotten the word) is the GREATEST common denominator.

Comedy draws from all sorts of experiences, and since we all have bodily functions/activities, it is therefore the most common thing that draws us together. It is also interesting to note that the word "vulgar" has two connotations, meaning crass/disgusting and common/of lower class people. Remarkable how these things become related in society.

I put it to you, that the LOWEST common denominator of humour would be something like, say, jokes about the 18th century economic philosopher Thomas Malthus. Only a few historians and economists would get those jokes, hence making them a minority of strange, pale people laughing at the back of the room.

Comedy is fascinating.

I feel so used.

Although I grew up in Hamilton, I also love Toronto. I think I'm the only person I know of who actually enjoys driving in downtown T-dot.

Also, this week's WT was pretty damn awesome. I don't know why some people don't find it that funny, because Morgan's facial expressions, particularly as he says "my ALARM GOES OFF," were top-notch.

That's what made it funny for me, his enthusiasm. Honestly, if not for the fact that he was dressed so nicely and had those exaggerated expressions I would've been bored to tears.

The suit was awesome.

In case anyone one was doing an official public opinion poll I thought I would chime in. (admittedly only because I don’t like, or plan on learning to like, anchovies)

Like some of the other members here I didn’t think this WT was funny. It seemed to me that it was created with the idea that using taboo material would make it funnier. But it didn’t.
There really didn’t seem to be anything ironic/amusing/unexpected about the story that would envoke laughter. Something other than masturbation could have had much more comic potential, like dreaming of having a woman sandwich … and eating it. Just re-reading that sentence over and over makes me laugh.

I'm not slamming your opinion, but I can tell you for sure that this was not written with the intent of "taboo=funny". I mean, Morgan doesn't find it especially taboo for one thing, but moreover, that's not how we roll.

I frankly despise the entire "rely on shock to compensate for comedy" theory of comedy writing, and it may work for some, but it's not for us.

Shocking doesn't equal funny, in my book. Someone could shock me by saying something I wouldn't expect, but most times I'll just give them a WTF look and not laugh. I'm really glad you guys have enough talent that using that sort of shortcut isn't necessary.

Of course we know. These are MORGAN'S dreams we're refering to here. What else could he dream about, other than hot women?
