Phailhaüs - 17

Postby Graham » 15 Jan 2009, 00:45

This was recorded so long ago. And finally, FINALLY, it lives.

Sorry it took so long, Adam.

Also, I have terrible hair in this video.

Woo new Phailhaus! Quite possibly my favorite LRR series, before cH started. Great job as usual, guys.

Also, first. Sorry, never gotten to do that before.

I was just thinking earlier today how it's been a couple months since the last Phailhaus & a while since we had regular bonus videos. Foreshadowing or coincidence??? And now TWO bonuses this week. Either way a nice surprise. Thanks!

Weird seeing Adam & yet hearing no mention of the Dutch. I was bracing myself for it.

Also, "begs the question" does not mean what you think it means.

Exactly the same thought came to me earlier, came home and noticed that we had 2 new ones this week!

Keep Phailhaus alive! I don't want to see it go the way of The Whatever Thing...

I (for the most part*) believe in the evolution of language.
Also that site did a horrible job of explaining how I'm "supposed" to use the phrase, and I used it the only way I've ever heard it used.

*I object to the phrases "on tomorrow" and "all of the sudden" but that's about it.

Now that I have more free time thanks to the new job I hope to do the Phailhaus as frequently as I used to.

Wait wait wait. Unskippable is paying enough for you to live on? Or do you have another job with the Escapist?

In that case, Graham, be careful. Don't want you to lose a hand or something...

I agree that language does evolve, but this is an instance where the meaning is changing because of a misunderstanding of the original term & that's what bugs me. It's like if the phrase "cast the die" came to mean actual death just because it has the word "die" in it.

The sentence "Evil Jim is super awesome!" begs the question because it gives no evidence to support the claim that it makes about Jim being awesome. It has nothing to do with an actual question & merely points out the logical fallacy therein.

I don't believe I've ever heard the terms "on tomorrow" or "all of the sudden" before. Where do you see them used?

I appreciate that, it's the thing that bugs me about language as well, when it's being changed by idiots.

Like "on tomorrow", said by people who think that because you can say "on Monday" you can say that.

I've heard "all of the sudden," and I always get confused...is "all of a sudden" acceptable, though, Graham? That's the phrase I tend to use in that kind of context.

Also, yeah fuzzy, we probably should. Given that it took me FOUR TRIES to type "probably" correctly.

wow, it has been a while
similar to the women going to school for her daughter there was a similar thing recently about a 54 year old man sitting an exam for his 20year old son, i don't understand how it can take people so long to realise that it isn't that right person

That makes sense now that I see it in context but it never would have occurred to me to speak of tomorrow in that fashion. And come to think of it, I have heard "all of the sudden" used before but thought it was more of a British colloquialism.

Before someone calls me on this, I do intentionally misuse language or warp it in ways for comical effect from time to time. Like referring to Noon O'clock or Midnite-Thirty. It keeps folks (and me) on their toes.

I like "Noon and a Half"

Not only is it fun to say, it sounds like a name for a TV show.

Sounds like a comedy sitcom to me, especially one from around the 1960s-1980s

Ok, I am officially adding "and-a-half" to my time descriptives.

"Noon? Did you already eat most that pie I JUST baked?"

"No Way mom, it wasn't me, but I think Half there is living up to his name!"

*Roaring Laughter, Thunderous Applause*
