Well google says smallpox looks like this:

Which is CLOSE, but not really the same.


天 is heaven, 灯 is light (probably specifically the lamp kind or something). So... some kind of skylight?

And the middle character, "花", means "flower" or "blossom". I think. That's just me doing symbol matching with the character palette and using Google Translate.

First off, that was a pretty awesome Phailhaus. =D I was in Japan for three months, (never ravaged by a dragon once =( ) and I saw a couple of engrish examples. My favourites were 'It's not sample!' on some pick'n'mix, and a sign in the hostel bathroom saying 'Please do not wash hair or clothes in toilet'.

The bit at the start where Kathleen said 'most people speak English' made me double-take. Really? Really? Because I speak some Japanese, and I still spent most of my time there playing charades. From my experience, you're lucky to find people who speak English at all. Were you mostly in the tourist areas?

(Funtimes: not knowing which gate to take at the train station mainly resulted in holding out my ticket and looking confused. Usually worked.)

Addendum: The 'smallpox' kanji actually say 'ceiling light', and the reason it makes no sense in Japanese is because it's Chinese. xD I have no idea how they got 'smallpox', though...

To be fair, when English reached America, it was the English from Great Britain. So, everyone spoke pretty much the same way. But as time went on, the language evolved in both cultures.

So, American English and British English both changed over the years. It is entirely possible that the American accent is closer to the original accent than the British accent.

Also, always capitalise the beginning of proper nouns. English and American are proper nouns. That's proper English.

Now, that's how you tell someone.

I'm just saying what I heard. Likely linguists looked at what recordings are available over the past 100 years or so, looked at environmental factors, how isolated the communities are, and other linguistical stuff, and extrapolated back. I'm sure they know what they were doing.
