To be fair, when English reached America, it was the English from Great Britain. So, everyone spoke pretty much the same way. But as time went on, the language evolved in both cultures.
So, American English and British English both changed over the years. It is entirely possible that the American accent is closer to the original accent than the British accent.
Also, always capitalise the beginning of proper nouns. English and American are proper nouns. That's proper English.
Now, that's how you tell someone.
