Who got caught 'cheating' in TF2?
Recently Valve has cracked down on idling programs and removing any item obtained with one. They also added insult to injury by giving anyone who had not used one a new hat (the halo). Although I only lost 3 items that I already had, I have to think someone must have lost more. So did you get caught? And if so what did you lose?

I did not get caught or lose any items, but I can't take the moral high ground because it's entirely due to the fact that I haven't played TF2 in a few weeks
Still, least I get a free hat.

I got caught and I lost a single hat (and nothing else since I already had all the unlocks). I am, however, taking a different moral high ground from those who did not get caught and I am now using this custom model.

I haven't been caught cheating, cause I don't cheat...I don't use achievement maps, or anything like that.
Re: Who got caught 'cheating' in TF2?
Wait, so what you're saying is that you left your game on without playing to get these hats, and valve roflowned you?
HAHAHAHAHA, suckas.

Re: Who got caught 'cheating' in TF2?
It was actually a low-resource program that emulated spectating in a TF2 game without ever launching tf2.exe.
Re: Who got caught 'cheating' in TF2?
I got my halo mainly because I quit playing. I can't see the thing though. I equipped it on my pyro but saw nothing.

Like a vampire.
But with knives.
Re: Who got caught 'cheating' in TF2?
So it's pretty much like a third party hack to unlock stuff you usually get from playing. I guess there were too many people to ban, so instead they stripped some e-peen off those people and gave a special item for the people who actually played the game.

Yeah I tried that idler program when it first came out in hopes of a huntsman. I tried it for 15 whole minutes. I wasn't even aware of the hats at the time back in May when I tried it.
Guess I should have just used that achievement unlock program to get them rather than idling for hours.

I didn't get caught "cheating" because hats are stupid and not worth my processing power.

Gotta say, I like that I FINALLY have a hat, but I think I prefer the standard hat on my Engineer. Think I'd rather have the miner's lamp over the halo.
It is kinda nice though.

To anyone who lost their shit, I have this to say:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7WHptG35EWU
Using third party software in a different online game would get you banned. What Valve did can only be considered a gigantic act of charity.

A halo is it? I believe pyro should get horns.
Only time ive ever "cheated" on tf2 was on RTD servers, but if you have RTD you are just asking for exploits.

Re: Who got caught 'cheating' in TF2?
@Lavos: Valve stated that only 4.5% of their players "cheated" so you know they'd still have 95.5% of their total players if they did ban everyone who used the idler. Right? Also, they ended up stripping many players of legit items and unintentionally caused a gigantic rift in the community with the new hat. And by "played the game" you must mean, "idled in achievement_idle".
@ King Kool: People don't get banned for using HLSS or HLDJ. People have never been banned for hosting games on B.net with list checker. I'm pretty sure tying Xfire to any PC game won't get you punished in any way either. That's all third party software, no?

Re: Who got caught 'cheating' in TF2?
They didn't ban anyone because it wasn't against the rules to idle until just recently, so it was more confusion than rule breaking that was behind the whole idle fad.

Re: Who got caught 'cheating' in TF2?
Yeah, I saw NO WHERE that said "don't idle please."
If they released a warning "please delete all items got by idling" a couple of days before auto deleting them, I'd be cool with that.
But I think its bullshit that they created the rule (or at least only just advertised it anywhere) at the same time as dropping the hammer.
How is my running an idle program different than idling in game? It's bullshit, even if I just lost the ten gallon hat.

Re: Who got caught 'cheating' in TF2?
Well one would think that getting items from not playing the game is cheating, so it's just common sense that you wouldn't do it.

That's like saying it's common sense to not go in the carpool lain by yourself. You see a nice empty lain no one is in, you'll go there to get to work faster. Now if there was a sign... It's the same with idling, they never said we could not, and it was just a faster way to what we wanted. THAT is common sense.
