God's damn it those chaps at Valve are bloody clever.
I mean, just look at all this stuff.
It all points in one direction; Portal 2. Portal. 2. PORTAL 2.
Squeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

Re: Portal 2
Retcon in a patch... that is just... wow... Way to go Valve, you have won the internet.
Re: Portal 2
It's not even so much of a retcon, it's a hidden scene that wasn't just hidden it was secretly implanted in much, MUCH later.
Re: Portal 2
Yeah, it's not like you find out what happens after getting out of the complex. It just shows the beginning of that scene and fades to white and the credits start.
For it to be a retcon, something would have had to happen that was changed.
Calling this a retcon is like saying the camera panning left instead of right is a retcon in the re-release of a film.

Re: Portal 2
There was also the addition of other bits of data in the game, also it completely changed the end of the game. I'd call that a retcon. If someone changed the end of Dracula so that Van Helsing runs up the stairway and kills everyone, that would be a retcon even though it just tags something onto the end.
Re: Portal 2
I'm not going to argue with you because just trying to think of a way to explain it any clearer than I did is causing me to rage.
You're wrong. It's not a retcon. Simple as that.

Re: Portal 2
It's simply adding more to the story we are initially presented with.
We didn't know what happened to her at the end of the game, she may have lived, may have died, may have teleported into the forest for fun and frolicking.
Now we know she gets dragged off by... something with a sense of wit.
all of the other things don't actually change any previous info either, they just broaden the scope of a previously incredibly focus chunk of a universe.

Re: Portal 2
Well, it is a retcon. Retcons do not always change something, sometimes they just add to an older work, or at least Wikipedia seems to think so...
Re: Portal 2
I once read on Wikipedia that Fort Knox is the largest storage facility for penises.

Re: Portal 2
Yes, I know you can not always trust Wikipedia, but logically changing or adding to an older work to line up with a sequel should be called retcon.
Re: Portal 2
That's not really what happened.
It simply extended the scene.
If they didn't extend it and just started the second game with her being dragged back, would you consider that a retcon?
Adding it to the middle, yeah, that'd be a retcon. This is added after the game is over, all the narrative is over.
Before, it simply faded out. Now it shows what happened. The story isn't changed. Nothing is switched around. They just are telling you what happened.

Re: Portal 2
The addition of details and clues to the middle of the game is defiantly retcon, that was also included in the patch. And retcon does not always change something, it sometimes just adds to it. I suppose the addition to the end could be considered an early part of the sequel, but the clues and details are defiantly retcon. I for one think the end is still a retcon, but I can see it go ether way.

Re: Portal 2
Aaaaaaactually, I agree with Ar. Surprise, right? Anyway, I believe for it to be retconned they would have to add something in the middle or flatly contradict something in the game. Adding at the end is the same as putting an extra scene at the end of a movie. In order for this to be a retcon, it would need to actually be put into Portal 2 and it would still have to not have been at the end of Portal

Re: Portal 2
They kinda did add stuff to the game, but nothing really substantial that would justify calling it a Retcon simply because what they added was more viral than anything.
They released the update to the game, with the patch notes saying
and
The intent was not to change the experience of Portal, but instead stir renewed interest in the game and get the fans thinking about what this could mean and that in turn created a puzzle for people to solve and thus announce the game.

Re: Portal 2
Wikipedia wrote:Retroactive continuity (often shortened to retcon) is the deliberate changing of previously established facts in a work of serial fiction.
While wikipedia tends to ramble on quite a bit after this very simple explanation, this is the basic of what 'retcon' means. No matter what they add, as long as it doesn't change established fact, it's not a retcon.
Edit: To get really picky, since there is currently no Portal 2 out there (so far as I know), anything they did change to the actual Portal game at this point would be revision, not retcon. Anything in a conjectured Portal 2 that alters the facts of Portal is where a 'retcon' would occur.

And the idea of the "Party Escort Submission Position" is NOT a new concept to the Portal Universe...Everyone thought it was a joke, but apparently it isn't.

Re: Portal 2
If Episode 3 is going to be Portal 2, I'm going to shit my pants. I always assumed that Chell was dead, it be odd if she turned up as a character in a Half Life game. 11th March, huh?

Thank you. Your the first other person I've seen since the patch to actually point this out. I thought I was losing my gorram mind...

Ah, screw it. We can call it retcon or addition or whatever we want. The fact remains; GDC is going to be interesting.
