I'm a nerd, so I like this kind of game. But if you enjoy brainteasers and mystery games, try the Professor Layton series.

Dragon Quest IX.

It's a flawless series.

80+ hours of gameplay is common per game, but with various DLC planned, randomly generated treasure maps and dungeons and the local wifi multiplayer content of the game, it's easily going to beat that.

I'm also partial to the pokemon titles, if you pick one up, give HeartGold or SoulSilver a try.

As for games not in the RPG genre, that's a little harder to suggest. Mario Kart DS is an obvious choice, as is Kirby Super Ultra Stars (But only if you can get it for 20-25 bucks, not worth 30-40, too short) and Kirby Canvas Course is also fun.

Not many others I can think of off the top of my head...

Platinum > Diamond and Pearl. Soulsilver and Heartgold and also really good. The choice of which one you want out of those two comes down to this list.
Pokemon Differences

Final Fantasy Tactics A2 and Disgaea DS are fantastic if you are into those types of games. Advance Wars Days of Ruin is good, and from what I can tell requires no experience with previous titles.

Animal Crossing will give you loads of fun, as will a good tetris game. If you find tetris DS, waste no time in buying it. That game is rare. Wish I could find that game. I absolutely adore it. The World ends with You is a really great and innovative game. Legend of Zelda: Phnatom Hourglass is very fun, although very easy and short.

The only thing I can recommend is the only thing I have.
Pokemon Heart Gold and Soul Silver, the only reason I bought a DS.

Dude forgot Pokemon and upgrade to Shin Megami Tensei. There's two of them for the DS and I hear they're both very good.

Pokemon is still pretty tight itself, but he should try the MegaTen series as well.

But of course, based on what Kathleen has said numerous times, the game are grind heavy, you've been warned. Not that it's a BAD thing, I just know that there are people who cannot stand that stuff... I've gotten used to it though in SP games.

It's not a grind when it's fun.

Oh, well, that's like if I said "Dude, forget Toy Story 3 and see Inception" even if Inception is a great movie (and it is) there is no reason to forget one great (nostalgic) thing for another when you can have both.

That's not a good example though. The SMT series is responsible for creating the genre of "monster collecting" games. They both have many of the same features, but SMT games actually have plot and interesting characters and plots. In just every regard, they're better games.

Okay, Originating a concept says nothing of how well you handle that concept. Saying it came first shows me nothing of its quality, and saying it has a better plot would make a book based on it better, but gameplay counts as does ease of understanding. What you are doing now is like arguing Gundam over Transformers, just because Gundam came first and has a more compelling story in now way makes it more enjoyable. Sometimes I don't want to be made to think about a game or show, I just want to see monsters fight (or in Transformers case, robots). That's not to say games that make me think have no place, however the place they have is distinctly different than that of Pokemon.
