I prefer Ghosts of Reach, but for different reasons. I'm into orchestral stuff.

Maybe not the greatest, but definitely my favorite.

Having played a very limited number of video games (basically just FF) I would vote for Aeris theme.

Personally, this ranks pretty highly on my list (apologies for the PBS ad wrappers), also I'd probably consider this to be up there and probably this.

Re: Greatest video game song ever.
When I usually play games I always listen to the music. I just sort of have a passion for it. That said, I don't remember many songs that I'd listen to all the time or consider great.
Though these are some of the themes I can listen time and time again and love to this day:
Star Fox Also in glorious orchestra
Metroid
And Recently Persona 4

Re: Greatest video game song ever.
As long as I'm allowed to post JRPG/JP Game OP's and whatnot, I'll contribute.
For me, there is no GREATEST song, but there are some fucking GOOD ones, I'll post a few:
Ring a Bell (Bonnie Pink/Tales of Vesperia) - http://tinyurl.com/ToV-Opening
Prologue: To the Ancient Land (Shadow of the Colossus OST) - http://tinyurl.com/SotC-Opening
HAPPINESS (Yazumi Kana/Rune Factory 3) - http://tinyurl.com/Rune-Factory-3-OP
Taka Pass/Royshima Coast Restored! (At the 56 Second Mark) (Okami OST) - http://tinyurl.com/Okami-Resto
Rune Factory 2 Generation 1 OP - http://tinyurl.com/RF2Gen1OP
Rune Factory 2 Generation 2 OP - http://tinyurl.com/RF2Gen2OP
To All People (Riei Sato/Fragile Dreams: Farewell to the Ruins of the Moon) - http://tinyurl.com/ToAllPeople
I'd post more but it's past 11:30 and I've got work tomorrow. I highly recommend people check out these games, but especially check out Fragile Dreams, PURELY on a rental basis though. The game is mediocre gameplay wise (Sans a few interesting sections) and the story becomes really unpleasant near the end of the game (albeit the speculation and theories myself and others on the GFAQ's board came up with CONCERNING the world and mythology behind it led us to realize that in a certain way, it's fucking fantastic if taken purely contextually and not for pure 'narrative') but god damn it does Fragile have one of the strongest atmosphere's in a game EVER.
Also, include Karma from Tales of the Abyss on there somewhere as well.
EDIT: Forgot one, because I consider Visual Novels an offbeat kind of 'video game' wherein there occasionally is decision paths (and occasionally RPG lite combat) that enforce a trial and error process upon the player:
Philosopyhz (Runa Mizutani/Rewrite) - http://tinyurl.com/Philosophyz

Re: Greatest video game song ever.
I have 2 big ones, probably unpopular.
The first one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r_8ihdqs2gQ
It sets the right tone for what the game is supposed to be.
And the second one, the fact that it was missing from the fourth game is a total crime, but I realise there was legal hoopla behind that.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ECjDfQd8QVc
I know I am missing out a whole lot, like the iconic Legend Of Zelda theme, the battle music from Shining In the Darkness (what the?), things like that, but the above 2 really stand out for me.

Re: Greatest video game song ever.
I'm a big retro music guy, esspecialy from the 16 bit generation
Still, the Red Wing theme must be one of the best songs to start a final fantasy game with:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KbQyqX9i ... re=related
And speaking of Square RPGs the music from Secret of Mana is ungodly. Seriously go to youtube and just choose a song at random, you wont loose:
here is a good starting place
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1xrRuhuHyic
and I want to give some love to Sonic, I was a Nintendo kid growing up but I have since learned to love the blue guy and his games have some really good music, specifically Mystic cave Zone:

I like Chrono Trigger (Intro theme), Bike Chase, Magus Battle, Schala's Theme, or To Far Away Times. Pretty much anything Chrono trigger is an instant "A."

Clash On The Big Bridge - Final Fantasy V

Fuck yes, I forgot the level of 'awesome' that Eternal Sonata's battle music had.
Tri-Crescendo makes some fucking great music for their games, I'm glad it held up in Fragile Dreams as well...

I can't believe no hell march yet
seriously every rendition of this song is epic win and sets the mood so well. of course the first is still my favourite despite being the least dramatic

one of the comments is spot on

If the nazi's had played this during their invasions with loudspeakers, they wouldn't have needed any guns at all... ppl would've just rocked the shit out and let them take it all from under their feet

In no particular order....
Storm Eagle - Mega Man X (SNES)
Beyond the Sea by Bobby Darin and Cohen's Masterpiece - Bioshock
[Ending] Tribute - Halo 3*
46860 Choices - Geometry Wars 2 (A section of it is my personal ringtone)
I'm sure there's more...but I can't think of any that haven't been said before.
*Regardless of your thoughts on the Halo Franchise as a whole, the soundtracks were FANTASTIC.
