Beta 1.2 is causing the problem. Give Fungi some time to fix it.

more detailed list of changes
somehow I see notebocks not helping the server troubles at all

* Note Blocks (right click to tune, trigger to play)
* 15 wool dyes
* A new water dwelling mob (Squid)
* New tree types (Birch, Pine)
* Reeds magically turned into sugar canes. They still make paper.
* A bunch of new crafting recipes
* One secret useful block (Dispenser)
* One secret pretty block (Sandstone block)
* Cake
* Sugar - Crafted from Sugar Cane
* Default furnaces given new look
* Bones added to the drop table, exclusively for skeleton archers.
* Bones can be crafted into Bonemeal.
* New gray, light gray, and black sheep. Drop correspondingly colored wool.
* Tools made out of stone are more durable.
* New ore type (Lapis Lazuli)
* Spiders can climb up wool blocks, color does not appear to matter.

Bugfixes:

* Paintings work in multiplayer
* Disconnecting while riding no longer keeps the player in the world
* A bunch more state is properly synched in multiplayer
* Fixed colors going weird on PowerPC
* Fixed a horrible chunk reload loop in singleplayer
* Fixed most lighting bugs in newly generated SMP maps
* Falling sand behaves better in SMP
* Fixed a few crash on load level bugs
* Jack-O-Lantern now has correct tooltip.

for now it seems it only allows dyeing cloth blue
but hey, good thing LRR is a blue themed site.

squids also drop ink sacks, although I was too scared to attack one and see if it was friendly or not.

Oh and Cake is amazing, 6 uses, and placeable, it heals around 9 hearts total i believe.

Oh and sandstone is pretty cool, very pretty, I'm gonna have to make some fences and such out of it.

Having read that gold tools now work faster than diamond I did some testing. They're sometimes faster, sometimes not, but still have very poor durability.

Shovels - diamond is already as fast as it can get, but gold is just as quick.

Axes - golden axes are definitely quicker for what an axe helps with (trees & planks).

Picks - golden picks are faster at cutting stone & coal, but they seem equivalent to a wooden pick for iron ore and above (takes a long time to break them still, and doesn't yield anything). Faster with cobblestone too, and useless for obsidian.

Looks like on creative with the infinite tool health a golden axe may be the way to go, with a golden pick being a useful aid for substantial clearing efforts (but you'd still want the diamond pick with you for any ores you find).

Huh. So I've tried logging in multiple times now, and every time it loads the terrain, spazzes out, and kicks me to the error screen with "Internal exception: java.io.UTFDataFormatException: malformed input around byte 299". Anyone else getting that problem?

After hours of internal debate, I have decided to upgrade the server, sans hMod. Backups will still be every 30 minutes, and will be the only method of stopping craziness.

God have mercy on our souls.

In other news, working on porting survival over. Because why the heck not.
