Re: LRR Minecraft Server
The server seems to be randomly dying while I'm asleep.
What's up with that?
Are you guys doing something to my poor, poor server?

Re: LRR Minecraft Server
Just give me a heads-up if you see the server's down. Not sure why it keeps doing that.
@AdmiralMemo on Twitter or a text to 443-231-4504 are the quickest ways to get me.
Also, I'm still trying to figure out a way to display the money well for those with long names (14 characters or more). Have no clue why it's an issue, or how to resolve it yet. We're already past the point where the SideBar is an option, as we're tracking too many people now.

A text option like /money to display dongs would be cool, if you can do that.

I've been looking for aliases in vanilla, but they don't seem to exist. It'd allow for spawn and home teleports, too.

being able to TP between home and spawn would be great, as it is its a 40 minute round trip for me lol.

Even with the rails? Where are you? If it's far enough, perhaps a Nether rail can be arranged?

Re: LRR Minecraft Server
Can this lag be traced to certain people for example if you can say "whenever Bob logs on everything dies" or "if Bob and Francis are on together it lags." Rather than "if more than 10 people are on it lags." If so is that something that can be fixed other than saying "please dont play unless you get a faster connection?"
Like this could be a settings issue where their network isnt allowing fast packets to and from that server specifically for some reason and they could manually clear it?
This may sound like dumb questions, I admit I haven't kept up with networking and internet connectivity for like 10 years and know NOTHING about minecraft servers other than Memo's is awesome.

Hosk: Yes, it appears that sometimes certain players are causing the lag due to their connections.
Regarding the money issue, I've found a solution, but it's really bad. It would require turning all command blocks to broadcasting again. This would mean that every teleport, every market transaction, every status change, etc. would end up in the chat. I doubt anyone wants that.

Bad news, folks. My computer completely bricked a few days ago, and I'm on my dad's old XP monstrosity with barely enough RAM to run Microsoft Office. Forget Minecraft. I might not be online for a while, but I will be back eventually.
I know. You're all crushed.

Re: LRR Minecraft Server
OK, just for everyone's reference: when the server's tanking, everyone trying to join repeatedly at the same time does not help.
If the server goes down, please wait at least 5 minutes before rejoining. Otherwise, it'll just keep going down again.

Re: LRR Minecraft Server
Well that was a fun adventure. This morning before work I jumped on the server to see where I had landed after last night's crash. I couldn't really get my bearings but I ran into a Nether rail line and followed it up to a portal. I remembered someone saying that Spawn City was somewhere around 250, 250 so I started working my way in that direction. After passing some pretty impressive builds, I was crossing the ocean on a boat and was just about within sight of the city. I was passing the ship in the harbor and could see the beacon when I got a server message saying to turn back. Problem was, I was zipping along so fast in the boat that by the time I read the message, I was already in Jail. I'm guessing I was crossing over into one of the bad chunks I've heard about, and got slapped with the countermeasures in place to keep folks out?
Anywho, I had to log out to get out the door for work. Hopefully Memo will be around and kind enough to release me when I get home this afternoon.

Re: LRR Minecraft Server
Ive mentioned to memo that the insta jailing for entering the borders of his admin areas is a pretty silly idea, just a TP back to spawn would be fine...
Re: LRR Minecraft Server
The jailing was necessary at the time I believe, instead of regular teleportation. I think that in the next vanilla update there are measures he will be able to take to not even need teleportation.
You probably wandered in to one of the admin areas and got teleported.

Well, if they get jailed, they learn not to go there.

Re: LRR Minecraft Server
Hello everyone! (This is my first ever post to the LRR forums!)
I recently started playing Minecraft (for the first time ever) since seeing James and Graham streaming their Minecraft adventures.
I would like to join you all on the server, but after reading back a bit in this post, I'd like some clarification on rules, standard operating procedures, and anything else I need to know. It is quite apparent that keeping this thing stable is incredibly taxing to Admiral Memo. So with that in mind I'd like to make my impact on the server as minimal as possible while still having a good time.
Could someone out there post a summary of the server and what can and shouldn't be done on it?
Thanks!

Re: LRR Minecraft Server
It's relatively stable currently, but it crashes every so often. Essentially 3 things forbidden to keep the server stable:
1. No leaving tons of items on the ground.
2. No large animal or mob farms.
3. The closer you are physically to the server, the better.
SOP is to come on the server when either I or a Mod is on. You read the rules. You grab a free kit if you want one. (I recommend it at least for the bed.) Then, you get authorized, and that's when you can break blocks.
Then, explore Spawn City, make use of the amenities, and explore the world. If you find a place you want to build something significant, clear it with me first. It's usually easy to tell on the surface, but occasionally, there have been underground concerns that aren't always immediately visible.

Re: LRR Minecraft Server
Alright, the log continues to fill with these lag messages:
[05:05:17] [Server thread/WARN]: Can't keep up! Did the system time change, or is the server overloaded? Running 3830ms behind, skipping 76 tick(s)
Every 20 seconds to 2 minutes, one of these appears, with various numbers.
If anyone can diagnose the cause of this, that'd be awesome.
Edit: Google search has produced some results that I can try.

Re: LRR Minecraft Server
Basically there are too many operations the server is trying to perform, so it isn't keeping up with real time. It's nice to see they actually put how many ticks were missed in vanilla. Server performance is measured in ticks per second. I don't remember what's normal, but that's basically how many operations or cycles or something that are performed per second.
Lag is usually caused by the server falling behind in TPS. This can be caused by any number of issues. Commonly by too many mobs (mob farms / grinders are killers here), too many loaded chunks, etc. There are probably many more factors since it's been a long time since I dealt with servers.
Easiest fix for TPS? Much faster processor. Unfortunately that's not an easy or cheap fix.
A suggestion you might try: Disable the nether for a few days or so. See how performance is then. We constantly had problems with the nether after certain updates. It would be absolutely fine for a while, then one update would just kill performance any time anybody went into the nether.
It would suck if that's the issue, but then you would also know the issue.

Re: LRR Minecraft Server
I've heard 20 TPS.
That explanation is similar to what I found. Kind of knew that except for the "too many chunks" issue. I'll see if lowering the render distance helps.
I don't think I can change the virtual processor, but I can add several more.
Regarding the Nether, I don't know how to disable it. Also, it happens when no one's in the Nether.

Re: LRR Minecraft Server
More processors probably won't help much due to java being mostly single threaded. Only a higher clock speed will help if cpu is the issue, but that's not really something you can change on a vps. Dedicated hardware is the only option there, and that gets expensive very quickly.
Disabling nether might not be a vanilla thing... if it is, it would be in the server.properties.
If I remember correctly, the basic bukkit with no plugins broke the command block stuff right? If it didn't, I would say run vanilla bukkit for the performance tuning. But if it breaks everything then that wouldn't work at all.

Re: LRR Minecraft Server
I'm a bit confused, I have bin alone on the server for the last one and a half hour. Since then there was not a single random mob spawn... the spawners still work and the Exp-Grinders but no aggression what so ever at night or in caves.
Is it because I'm alone on the server, that there is less (like none) spawn, or did someone leave a Grinder on and every mob is there?

Never underestimate the power of denial.

Hey Guys and Gals.
Having fun in my own little world, Cita-Doom is growing well, I now have Horses and Wolves, but was thinking about maybe getting a summer place for vacations.
What's the process for visiting and/or setting up a bivouac on LRRCraft.com, so you know I don't kill the server occidentally, or farm someone's villagers.
