Just an update: map chopping and Market overhaul will be delayed until the release of 1.8.

Map chopping delayed to take advantage of the new block types spawning.
Market overhaul delayed because the plan I originally had involved a large system of chests, redstone, and hoppers for each item type. In 1.8, it can be accomplished by 2 command blocks per item type. On the up-side, this means I can move up the renovation of the current basement, since I was previously unclear on how large the mechanisms would turn out to be. Now, I know how big to make them, and I'll have a bunch more room for more stuff to buy.

Already declared my spot, and I'll be housing most of my base underground. I forgot the coords, though, and will post them when I get back from my vacation.

I decided to pick a Plains biome, and once I've got enough materials, I think that my project is going to be building a town for Hobbits (where all the underground is MINE, ALL MINE, MWA-HA-HA!). Basically, there will be a series of one, two, and three bedroom houses above ground (with a marketplace, farms, an inn, etc.) and all the houses will be grass-covered hill shapes set into larger hills. And my home will be somewhere among them, but I will have totally tunneled out the resources underneath it.
