I think what we need is some street names and signs. maybe we can choose some lrr references for the names? anyone with me? would at least give the town more character and something to give as a direction

I like KinoGami's suggestion. We don't need to redo the city, just put up a few signs with directions to important buildings.

Um... So you guys don't like the map with signs that I did? It's not helpful?
I thought it showed which buildings were where very well.
Other people said they liked it.

haven't seen it yet.

The only thing I find confusing about spawn city is when I come out of the nether portal and am in a building that is exactly symmetric with no indication inside it which door leads to the side with the market.

I always have to pause there and try to see through the windows to figure out which direction I'm facing. If the floor was a half one color and the other half different... or if the lava pools were at least both on the same side... and or the ghast floor things not being reversed... then it'd be less confusing. any one of those things would work... no need to do them all. probably the easiest would be to rearrange some of the quartz in 1 of the ghasts so they were both facing the same way...

I've already learned the layout of Spawn city fairly well, so I don't know how good the map is, but glancing at it I thought it was fine.

The map looked good to me Memo, though I already know spawn relatively well so I may not be a good judge.

As someone relatively new, I was initially a bit confused, but that's passed with the amount of times I've walked those streets. I didn't even have a tour, the first night I got on, all I did was roam around and see the sights. I have less than a week under my belt, but I've already learned the layout. "Oh, here's the cobblestone factory. that means the rail station is thattaway. Alright, I just finished with the XP grinder, now on to the marketplace directly across the street to exchange levels for diamond. It's simple enough once you get used to it.

If I would change anything, I'd add some street signs here and there. Of course, I got used to wandering around the streets of Boston when I went to school there, so my tolerance for eccentric layouts may be high.

Memo: Rail Map needs a compass rose to correspond w/ the map.

I got a little lost on the rails trying to get back to my homestead (due to death. Got it fixed now), until I got help that the rail map needs to be rotated 90 ccw (45 ccw to be exact) to line up with the world map.

Well, the rail map has always had north for up, and it's always has been not completely indicative of direction. If it were, the green line would be completely restructured, and the Village would be directly underneath Owl's. There was a warning to the effect of "not necessarily directionally accurate" when Osprey was doing it.

Also I'm assuming you're referring to the default world map, as there's 5 other modes to it.

That's how this discussion started in the first place...

I'm moving to 2200, 70. Need a nice flat area to start building Orthanc + Isengard.

Moving sucks.

The distances are also not to scale. According to the current rail map, it's a short hop from the Sand Pit to Parker's, when in fact it's one of the longest single stretches in the whole rail system. Granted it's not a problem when you're using the rails themselves to get around, it just threw me off a bit when I was navigating on foot and trying to match up the rail map to overworld landmarks.

It seems like the map would become a bit unweildly if it was all to scale, but if that's what you wanted, you could probably make it as a separate layer in photoshop or similar, and draw it over the top of the actual map. Then remove the actual map and bam, to scale, matching axis map.

Dunno if that's necessarily more useful than the existing map, however.

Maybe a better idea is to list the coords of the stations on the rail map, so someone can easily find it corresponding place on the rendered map.

You'd have to be careful not to clutter the map too much though. Probably just put this in a legend.

Yeah, either a legend, or using alt text would work.

The idea for a legend to go with the rail map was already discussed earlier. Otherwise, the advice would be (1) use the map as you would any rail map and don't expect it to be geographically accurate and (2) use Memo's spot directory if you want to know the coords for a place. The rail map is there to show you which stations are connected to one another, and not to aid travel by foot.

A map with legend is in the works, but I want to incorporate the planned news tracks and stops before making a nice tidy index of lines/stations.

Yeah, memo's handy drawing is good enough for finding rail stations, which is all you really need the coordinates for. I was just discussing it as an idea.

For proper attribution's sake, it would be Osprey's and AlexAshman's handy drawing. :)

Memo, you could do an imagemap by adding this to your html....

Code: Select all

<img alt="" title="" src="RailMap.png" width="1067" height="495" alt="" title="" usemap="#RailMap">
<map name="RailMap">
<area coords="120,410,170,460" title="-267,844">
</map>

when you hover over my location it would show my coordinates! would be a ton of work tho getting the coords and finding the regions on the image map. :/

Could you add labels to the lrrcraft world map?
I mean things like the train station locations and other people's build areas.
I am new to the server and it is quite hard for me to figure out where the stations actually are on the map and which areas are already taken by other players.

The map labeling will come in due time since admiralmemo is currently figuring out how to add additional labels putside of the initial spawn point pin. That's why for now we have the google doc with all our coords. I do believe there's major hubs on the doc or plans to add all of them.

Yeah. What BD said. :) This coding system is a bugger. I think I have it worked out, finally, but actually typing the stuff in will be a pain.

In any case, on another subject...

Is anyone using the money transfer machines in the Market? If not, I'm going to remove them.
The wiring is in the way of the renovations, so I'll have to dismantle them either way. I just wanted to know if they were being used, so I'd know if I should rebuild them elsewhere or not. I'll give until Saturday to answer.
