Good :). You'll be welcome here. Also, I'm trying to begin a small township in the area I'm at, as it's reasonably flat beyond a point and between biomes. The part I'm on is mountainous (and I've sort of hollowed out a part of a mountain,) while everything west of it is desert. You're welcome to move here and begin a home (for free :D.)

I finished the Viking Village today. It isn't very large, just the chief's longhouse with three standard longhouses, a storehouse, leatherworker's cabin, boatbuilder's shed, two market stalls, a beached Viking longboat, and another sailing west. Below are some pics.

I did manage to accidentally burn the first sail on the longboat, but placed the second more carefully. I'm just very careful when playing with fire and measure the distance between the fire and the nearest wood very closely.

With the completion of my underwater dome (Yah!), I'd be interested in starting work on creating room for the capitol building. I posted earlier in the thread the location for the capitol I like the best of MasterGunner's suggestions.

A fair amount of the space is over water. What's the strategy for "leveling?" Is it eventually going to be cobble down to bedrock? In that case, I believe we'd want to dredge the lake with sand from the start. If we just want a single meter of dirt along sea level, then it's a straightforward "floating" platform. Keep in mind, the floating platform would take substantially less time.

Thoughts on location and/or dredging vs. floating platform?

sadly floating platform doesn't work with the height of the thing it needs to be somewhere between 10 and 25 blocks below sea level, can't remember which.

I mentioned it on the server once but only a couple people were on:

I'm going to recreate the three LRR Moonbases as sort of a museum. Should be fun!

I think notch removed it when the game went into alpha, but plans to put it back in at some point.

I could be wrong though.

It's all a sick game, he taunts you incessantly then kicks you so hard it crashes the game

on a more helpful note it works fine for me and fugi has been informed

he says you may need a newer client

Hmm, I honestly don't know why this would happen. Minecraft is very resource intensive, so if you are doing anything else on the computer or have poor internet? Or just an outdated client?

I can't think it is a server problem....

Well, Format C:/, Its the only way to be sure?

But honestly, all I can suggest is verifying/redownloading either Java and/or Minecraft. Something may have gotten messed up?

Or just keep trying...

Hurray for graham being on the server! So where are the moonbases being constructed?

Also, I am in favour of completely filling in the area down to seabed for the capitol building. It's a heck of a lot more work, but I think a floating platform (Or floating bowl as the case would be, it being below sealevel and all) would look weird.

That pretty much cinches it. The only way to build below sea level is to be below the sea. Maybe tonight I'll start marking out the 100x300 platform. Then I'll go to the beach that's close by and stock up on a LOT of sand. Anyone that wants to do that before tonight is welcome. The picture of where it goes is earlier in the thread and I have the transporter set up on the Google Doc or earlier in this thread to take you to the middle of the proposed capitol.

Actually iirc, the lake bed isn't all that deep for most of the space so it could be a lot worse.

The Frozen East waypoint appears to be damaged, the teleporter near spawn isn't working and is reporting an obstruction.

Additionally, the inner ring of the ground-level walkway layer has been completed, so I'll get to workin on the exterior ring soon to give us some good firm ground to use over the deep water regions of the lake site.

Open call for Engineers
Is there anyone able and willing to follow the sphere blueprints (Specifically those for 54, 58, 64, and/or 80 scale spheres) to construct the spheres of the arcology? If so, post and let me know!

The Great Wildfire of November 7th

Postby ecocd » 08 Nov 2010, 06:01

I think everyone heard about the enormous wildfire either accidentally or intentionally started (did Fugi ever figure that out?). I did my best to take a panorama, but I got there once it was mostly contained. It still gives you some idea of the magnitude if you use your imagination. A lot of the black area you see is trees that had already been cleared. Every flame you see used to be a full canopy. And this is the remains of about 20% of the blaze. Fair warning, it's an enormous image:

Image

Here are the before and after carto maps. You can see the sunsphere for a point of reference. Even the aftermath was a sight to behold.

Image

I ended up with 8 stacks of logs in my effort to protect the few trees remaining. I've since replanted 64 saplings and I encourage everyone to do their part. Go north from spawn and any open grasslands you find on that landmass should have trees on it. Slowly, but steadily, we will restore that forest biome to it's natural state.

Hmmm, was a bit worried it might have been my central heating system again. Luckily it's the other side of the water there. To be sure though, I'll clear a 5 block wide fire corridor around the hill inside of which the cove is located. That way any fire will stay contained. I highly encourage anyone with a large build project inside a forested area to do the same, any slight mistake in lava or fire placement would stay contained to within the corridored area. Preventing massive and widespread forest fires. It's not that much work, and gives some extra wood to boot.

Remember Smokey Bear, "Only YOU can prevent wildfires"

I've got about 75 saplings in my chests, I'll have a go at replanting some this evening.

@Lyinginbedom, I'd be willing to help out on the arcology. I haven't built from blueprints yet, but as a mechanical engineer, it's sorta my job. So I figure I'd be fine :-P

@ecocd What's the red splotch North of the sun sphere in those shots? It doesn't seem to exist on the pre-fire carto, but seems to be more similar in colouration to the sphere's lava than the fire on the surrounding trees.

@Dutch Awesome! I'm going to work on the exterior walkway ring for the moment, so if you could get started on the north biome (58 sphere, just like the 2 rings presently existing) that'd be great. The upper-lower divide is water level (as noted by the 2 centre levels of the other rings) and is centred on the 2x2x2 block North of the sun sphere.

Personally I recommend building a layer on one half and then repeating it on the other, certainly sped up construction on the sun sphere. Construct the biome from dirt initially, there's plenty in the chest at the furnace site at the moment, and it'll be replaced with glass once walkway exclusion has been factored in. Dirt is used because it is easily replaced compared to Glass when mistakes and accidents necessitate its removal.

Do NOT dig out the area near the walkway when building down, it'll make my job putting in the exclusion much easier if I'm not constantly having to build a platform to stand on.
