parker's Nether-side rail seems fine to me. I found that portal, and yes, it seems to lead nowhere.

Alright... Discussion time regarding travel. 3 options available: teleportation, above-ground rails, and underground rail tunnels.

I'd like to get opinions on what people want. Every time I've asked in-game, I've gotten different answers from different people, so I want to get a compilation of everyone's responses.

Teleportation:
Plus: Quick travel, can teleport ANYWHERE
Minus: Without mods, it'll be confined to command blocks, so teleport "rooms" or such would need to be built

Above-ground rails:
Plus: Beautiful scenic view
Minus: Needs maintenance from mobs

Underground rail tunnels:
Plus: Little-to-no maintenance
Minus: Boring/monotonous

So, thoughts on what the future of the server should look like regarding transportation?

Honestly, I'm quite happy with underground rail tunnels. Above ground rail tunnels are fine, but I always feel awful when I get a creeper to blow up someone's work...

Not sure about the teleport rooms. I know I'd LOVE to be able to teleport to Spawn, and I can see where anywhere that had a teleport room would just have a "port to Spawn" button, and then Spawn would have a massive Port Library, to port to anywhere with a teleport room... or something like that. But I dunno how I feel about it.

I wouldn't mind a few teleporter rooms in the stead of the particularly long and monotonous underground rails, but if above ground rail is feasable, I think that that's the best option, and I actually like some of the underground rails, too.

Actually, I think if we're talking teleports, we should avoid teleports to spawn altogether. I wouldn't want to make any existing rails obsolete. I think that they should be used sparingly, if at all, and only to facilitate travel that is inconvenient by rail.

That said, I do have some questions regarding the teleporter idea:
Could we get short-range teleporters to serve as "elevators"? (Thinking an idea for my towers)

The overground ones could be made safer from mobs by putting them at height, like an overhead monorail type thing. This way you get the view of the landscape, and locals get the view of whatever architectural style you build the causeway in, say, some kind of stone-arched viaduct...

I like the rails personally, I don't think teleportation gives you a fair appreciation of the scale of the server, and rail isn't so slow as to make it incredibly tedious.

Yeah, even the small amount of rail it is, I really like the rail between my two towers, because it gives a nice aerial view.

That said, too much raised rail line can really ruin the aesthetic of the server. The best way to do it, I think is make as much of it feel "bridge-like" as you can.

Yeah, teleporters would be nice...but I like the rail system. Even the mix of 'subways' and 'El-trains'.

As for the above ground stuff, raising it some would help, as would the simple measure of glassing in the lines - doesn't obstruct the view, but it even keeps horses off the track..."c'mon you old nag, come get the carrot...c'mon; don't make me whack you...oh, just move *pushs* just a little further, NO, don't turn around!! Aw, hell with it!" *gets out pick and digs out 2x2 passage, pushes horse out, and rebuilds line*

Personally I've never like the aesthetics of above ground railways, they are quite often just a visual block. And no matter how much you try, they get monotenous quite fast. Especially when stretching from horizon to horizon.

It's all about the viaducts I reckon. Pick a y= level, set that as rail height, then build tunnels, cuttings, embankments and viaducts as required. Smooth rail system, easy planning, nice appearance.

My subways are all y=36, makes life easy that way.

So, despite what I heard last night, teleportation is mainly not favored.

Vola: I can certainly do short-range teleports. "Anywhere" means anywhere.

Viaducts look more and more like an option.

I think if a teleportation option is used, it must be limited. Take a few trips to get where you are going. No one big library of locations.

I've always felt that games which make travel easier and faster make the game worse. Look at SWG before there were even speeders and swoop bikes. You had to walk everywhere! WOW before all of the instant fast travel stuff. remember when you actually had to go to a dungeon to run it?

Was there some kind of problem recently that caused the server to rollback? I had done about 6 hours of work this morning and when I just logged back in I was suffocating because the giant room that I logged off in that I had dug out was now completely gone and I was standing in the middle of rock with gravel over my head falling in on me, I also lost all the materials I'd gathered from looting an abandoned mine and all the minerals I'd gathered.

Just wanting to see if it's just me before I go and get all sad about having to build stuff all over again completely from scratch.

Clypheous: No roll-back noted recently, though the server did run into problems last night, when I upped the RAM temporarily, and forgot to set it back down again when the RAM ran out on the server itself.
I did save everything before I rebooted.

The only teleportation that I really miss is the only one we had available to all players on the old LRRcraft server. A /Home command. Every player could set one location as their home and could then teleport there using the /home command.

(Well, that and the compass teleport available only to the admins, but I've learned to do without it)

I've considered mods and plug-ins, but so far. it's been more hassle than it would be worth.

Oy... That stinks. Sorry folks. Not sure WHY it rolled back, nor why the character position was saved, but the block updates were not.

I added a couple of enchantments to the Market: Efficiency V, Fortune III, Silk Touch I, Looting III, Unbreaking III
They enchant whatever's in your hand. (Note: If the item in your hand can't receive the enchantment, you still lose the levels.)

So, to let you know, my PhD research has hit full pace now and I'm not getting to spend a lot of time on the server as a result.

1. Part of me has burnt out on the Templemir project, largely because or the time vs. work left to do ratio, and partly because I kinda want to try something new.

2. The new update looks awesome, and I'm quite interested to see what a fresh map would look like, particularly with the new terrain features including mesas and such. So I might spend a little time in SP playing around in those.

Memo: I'll send you the code for the Beno map for the rail-system so you can edit that yourself as you desire.

If at any point there is discussion over a map refresh or anything like that however, be sure to let me know. Particularly if that means discussion for design of a new integrated transport system... :)

Regarding new terrain, I can set up the map in MCEdit and just find all the unedited chunks and reset them. They should regenerate as 1.7 chunks instead of 1.6 chunks.

Thanks in advance for the map code.

Regarding Templemir, how much is "left" on it? Isn't it just the armory and archery range? If so, I can try to get that installed, just to finish it.

If there is ever a map reset, I will try to collaborate with game members to get a better transportation system set up in advance, rather than organically growing as it so far has been.

After the archery range and the assault course, I had planned to install a Nether temple not unlike the one in my dwarven fortress on the old server's map. It's also missing a food processing centre akin to the foundry, and I planned to make a dome similar to the arboretum at the other end of the corridor to act as the lumber area.

I might nip on time to time to do bits, but I'm hankering for something less aquatic on my next effort, more like what I had planned prior to the death of the last server...

Well, for the temple, maybe you can work with Ike. He's making the Temple of mooB giB under his tower. Though it's creeper-based, perhaps it can be combined with Nether elements?

Arboretum should be easy enough to install if you can get me started with a design. Food processing = just cooking food? So it'll be just a copy of the Foundry, but with different filters? That would probably take the longest of anything.

Regarding less aquatic efforts, let me know if you have any types of terrain in mind.
