I think this issue is more that this world was created several updates ago so the new blocks simply dont exist anywhere close because when the world was created, they didnt exist.

If I remember correctly this is a 1.5 world so there are several types of 1.6 1.7 and 1.8 blocks that you would have to travel out to 10,000+ to find not because the world was too big but because the world was generated before they existed.

I'm slightly hesitant to point this out, but if another major update or two come out while the server is still thriving, it might become more practical to just restart, or to host a second server.

I would not mind a restart, but i can imagine some people do

I have a little time invested.

I also have quite some time invested, but if it comes down to it I'd accept a restart without (much) complaint. I'd probably gripe a bit about all the work I'd have to do, but that'll be aimed at no-one in particular. At this point the server has been down for so long I doubt I can even remember some of the stuff I had constructed/stored.

Personally, I've got better ideas of what to do 'next time', but I kinda like what I've got/had.

Yes, I'm putting up a barrier. It's actually a 1.3 world, but world generation didn't change significantly until 1.7. In the Nether, you had the same stuff, except no Nether Quartz in the earlier chunks. Horses needed to be imported when that came along. But, while 1.3, 1.4, and 1.5 were out, the world was small and had fewer people. When 1.6 happened, the world got much larger due to an influx of people. Then 1.7, and I should've trimmed then, but I was lazy.

1.8 doesn't have much different in world generation than 1.7.

I for one look forward to planning and building an urban center if we restart. However I feel like most of my ideas won't be completely realized unless we did something like Dire Wolf, but I can manage with vanilla blocks.

What type of ideas are you interested in? Automation? We've got some good redstone people. It'll just take a bunch more space. (See the automated Forge.)
Or is it just block types that vanilla is missing? If so, there's always texture packs to help that.

I'm more builder than tinker, so things like the chisel tool, carpenter's blocks, and the industrial blocks (like those seen in the Sub Wall) would be great to have. Automation to take out some of the tedium of building would also be nice but again that's not really necessary. And actual furniture instead of slabs and stairs mimicking them would be appreciated.

But I can do without all that stuff. I'm satised enough with a vanilla MP server; modpacks like Dire Wolf might be better off left for consideration later on.

Ah... Yeah, I can see the appeal of that. I'll get with Anaerin after the Vanilla server is sorted and try to get a modded server running again. I think Anaerin was thinking about DW20 if we ever get it going again.

Thought I'd give an update in visual form... Islands of civilization that will be surrounded by a sea of new chunks the next time people log in. Progress is slow, but steady, especially since I've gotten into areas where people have significantly settled. I've started listening to LRR podcasts as I work, which seems to help.

I think I accidentally deleted someone's cobblestone wall, unfortunately, but I don't think that's too much of an issue to repair.

Great to hear about the progress; I look forward to visiting everyone's fantastic builds again. I'm also curious if the ocean to my west will have turned into something else.

Agreed. Great progress so far! Unfortunately my build is next to spawn city so I don't think I'm gonna see any new chunks around my place. Yay for Exploration!!

I think it will be really funny if the expansive fields of snow go away in the refresh. so instead of a wall of ice and snow at the northern end a vast expanse of snowy plains, its a strip of snow in the middle of the desert.

Is it sad that I kind of want to see that happen?

Well, the area around me and AdmiralMatt always seems to be snowy, so depending on where we actually are on that map, we might see some new features nearby.

Yeah, but the wall is super long and passes through some relatively uninhabited areas. I'm guessing the odds are decent of the wall being very near to some chunks that regenerate into a warm biome of some sort.

I basically haven't been playing any video games lately other than a few hours of Civ here and there, so I'm quite looking forward to seeing the server again. Shame the giant obsidian generator machine I built is now obsolete. Stupid 1.8 bugfixes.

Hopefully the ocean doesnt disappear around WORST. Kind of hard to have an oceanic research station without an ocean.

Instead of putting up a World Border, just get Hosk to make a Wall. :P
