If Minecraft hasn't done it already, nothing will.

Re: a sad new truth
If you've no time to play games as much, there's nothing wrong with a "casual" game. Chances are if you try to play a game that is more "hardcore" you won't be able to play it too often, and forget the plot and be lost.
I suggest plants vs zombies if clickquest doesn't do it for you.
Also, please don't get too hung up on the terms "hardcore gamer" and "casual gamer".

Re: a sad new truth
Rather than rant about how distinguishing 'Hardcore' and 'Casual' is ruing the game industry (I mean, really, there are no 'Hardcore' books, or movies, or TV shows) but rather than do that; If you want a classic fantasy RPG with a great story, great character customization, and such a large amount of choice that you will NOT get the best ending on the first play-through, I suggest Dragon Age: Origins. I agree that an RPG should have a well thought out story (the reason I avoid most MMORPGs [that and I like having a bit of a life (Minecraft is the exception)]) and Dragon Age: Origins story is as well written as any other BioWare title (and no lead voice acting means no derp dialog [unlike Mass Effect (I need to stop with the parentheticals)])
Re: a sad new truth
Portable games that will suck you in and be easy to play whenever (MOSTLY RPGs) are your best choice... Lemme list some.
PSP:
Persona 3 Portable
Class of Heroes
KH: Birth By Sleep
Patapon 2 (Skip the first, it's rather unfair at times...)
Half Minute Hero
Yggdra Union: We'll Never Fight Alone
Knights in the Nightmare
ZHP: Unlosing Ranger vs Darkdeath Evilman
Mana Khemia: Student Alliance
DS:
Etrian Odyssey III
Dragon Quest IX
Rune Factory 3 (And 1 and 2)
Mario and Luigi 3: Bowser's Inside Story
The World Ends With You (TWEWY for short)
Avalon Code
Luminous Arc 2
And there you go. If you wanna play some of the harder to find titles, get a Gamefly subscription and rent titles from there. Ones like Avalon Code, Luminous Arc 2, TWEWY and Rune Factory titles will probably be easier to find on there.
...And all the titles sans Birth By Sleep I listed for the PSP are all available on PSN.

Re: a sad new truth
Twewy is great. I've only played through the first act, I guess you'd call it. Other suggestions, Final Fantasy Tactics A2 has great gameplay, the sotry is meh. Disgaea DS is great, along with Chrono Trigger if you;ve never played the originals. Advance Wars Days of Ruin is treating me well for not having played other games in the series. And, of course, both the Zelda games are great.
For puzzle games, you;ve got Trace Memory, Pheonix Wirght games, Professor Layton, and Hotel Dusk.
And of course, you can never go wrong with POKEMON!!!

You can only go wrong with pokemon. tsk tsk tsk.
But really, you might want to give the Mardek series a try if you're looking for a good rpg. It's a flash game, so it's free. And most importantly, you can save anywhere (well not in battle or during dialog). So if you're busy you can save and quit. The only real issue is that you have to play it on the same computer I believe.
Other suggestions:
That new Gold Sun for the DS looks pretty cool. Perhaps a bit to hand-hold-y though.

~I'm probably not serious~
Oh and you can just call me Dave.
No need for the whole screen name.
