Mortal Kombat
I'm not sure how many on the forum likes or still likes the Mortal Kombat games. I've just given it a good caning through the story mode and all I can say is best MK since MK2. Combo systems, design, story (which is coherent for once) it all very well done. Best part is it has returned to its gory past.

That was my initial opinion playing the demo. I didn't even know it was out yet or I'd have leapt at it. But yeah, I can predict many people being one very overpowered Scorpion. Easy to play, hard to lose.

Re: Mortal Kombat
I've played as Scorpion a bit, he's not too hard to beat at times. Most of the characters seemed balanced apart from the usual bosses. Khan is as big a dick as he's always been.
There are many references to later games, in one part in the Story Mode you fight Quan Chi and Shang Tsung. Quan Chi remarks it as a Deadly Alliance and Tsung looks at him in disgust that he made a bad pun.

Re: Mortal Kombat
I only played the demo at a friends house and I really feel they're going back to their original style with this one. I lost a little faith in the pussified DC Vs. MK game, but this one really revives my violent, combo mashing 12 year old self.

Re: Mortal Kombat
I'm really interested in picking it up some time, but I have too many games on my platter at the moment.
HOWEVER! I have been watching the competitive scene. Of course it's too early to tell how the scene will go, but people have already been coming out with some really interesting things.
I'm not a fan of how some of the new designs of the characters (Reptile, Smoke's hair, and some others), but the alt outfits are usually pretty cool. Cyber Sub-Zero looks like a lot of fun to play as too.
The story is pretty cool from the let's play I watched. It's a bit iffy in spots, but it's probably better written and just as entertaining as the original movie (which I actually quite enjoy).

Re: Mortal Kombat
I played it for a bit with some friends Monday. Half of the time I got my ass kicked because I was learning as I go and the other half I was dominating because my opponents were slightly slower learners than I was.
Fun, but I'm probably not going to buy it.

Re: Mortal Kombat
Random comments from me:
Mortal Kombat has a heavy focus on gore.
If the gore was taken out, it wouldn't be a very fun game.
Those are the reasons why I don't like Mortal Kombat.

Re: Mortal Kombat
But that's actually not true at all. The fighting system alone is very fun and very satisfying. Unlike most other fighting games, it actually feels like a game I could get good at. Maybe even real good at.
The gore is just part of the visual style. It doesn't really add anything to gameplay.

Re: Mortal Kombat
I haven't seen a great deal of gore in the story mode of this MK. I'm still loving the hell out of it. The combat is fun, the characters are diverse and the story is interesting enough to make me want to keep playing. The fatalities and gore are just a little cherry on the cake. And who doesn't like cherries?

Re: Mortal Kombat
Gore just isn't something I like to see, and since it's one of the selling points of a franchise, I'll pass.
And of the Mortal Kombat games I've played, none of them seemed invigorating enough. I know there's depth in the moves and such, but all the combos seem so disjointed, like they don't flow much.
Maybe it's just me. I've played MK2, UMK3, and MKvDCU. Are those bad examples? I don't know, but I didn't like any of them.

Re: Mortal Kombat
Well Mortal Kombat 2 is pretty much one of the best of the lot. If you didn't like that, you're just not a fan of Mortal Kombat in general it seems. So yeah, the new one's pretty much more of the same.

Re: Mortal Kombat
For what it's worth I'm just going to throw out there that I'm more of a Tekken person, really.
Why don't you play a real game? A man's game with fighting bears and wooden men made of metal. With Satan tag-teaming with a kangaroo. Not your fucking gay Mortal Kombat with your eight different ninjas who are the same palette-swapped characters or your women wearing less than the average stripper. Or your fucking special moves that somehow turn people into babies. *Pssh* Yeah, right.

Re: Mortal Kombat
I'm a Street Fighter guy. Well, that's not completely true. I'm more into Marvel vs. Capcom.
Don't get me wrong; I don't think Mortal Kombat is a terrible game. It does what it does quite well, and MK9 is packed with content that I wish other fighters had. It's just that I guess I'm more into games that have a crazy, hyper flow. MK is too slow for me. At least from what I've experienced.
Tekken's alright, I guess. Text is too small.

That rant I just sto- er, "borrowed" from The Spoony One originally made fun of Street Fighter, not MK. Take that for what you will.

Spoony insulted Super Smash Brothers on Twitter. Nothing he says will do anything to me anymore.

With a bit of money exchanging hands for both the game and shipping costs I sure you can get your hands on a copy after a bit of "light smuggling"...

I'm a Street Fighter fan myself. Tekken's kinda hit and miss for me. Tekken Force is always fun.
Can't wait for Street Fighter X Tekken!

Hey, you can use all those spines you'll collect to renovate the banister of your staircase, so I think we can safely call that a win-win.
