Help with co-op games

Postby theDreamer » 25 Apr 2011, 09:48

So for the summer, aubergine and I are far apart, and are looking for things that will bring us closer together.

Namely video games.

So: we both have PCs that can run new and old games, so as long as it's on PC it's doable.

We want stuff that's meant for or at least optimized for two players.

Things we have and or have tried:

Alien Swarm. We might retry this, since my computer is better now than it was, but the game is exceptionally difficult with only two people.

Shadowgrounds/Shadowgrounds: Survivor. Thanks to the humble bundle, we have them, but have yet to try it. Any one know if the co-op is good?

Left 4 Dead 2. Only we've played every level and I get kinda bored ish.

Portal 2. Only we've nearly completely finished. IT'S SO SHORT ARGH.

Magicka! I forgot you. But not easily done with 2 people, so we need to wait for other people to be around.
I can put my hands in my head, and I can laugh it in the face.

How about Guild Wars? You could probably get that quite cheap now. I'd recommend Prophecies (the first one/original.)

It's designed really around teams BUT you can buy Nightfall or Eye of the North which unlocks heroes, the smarter customisable version of henchmen. Henchmen are always around and you can fill a team with AI and as few human players as you'd like in instanced areas.

Borderlands will give you 100+ hours and it is alot of fun and i think the game of the year edition is on steam right now for like $10 or something insane like that. Not to mention any mmo, Dungeon Fighter is free to play and its like a Streets of Rage mmo. Also Minecraft if you havent got it already get it.

Im more of a console gamer but i dabble in pc from time to time and those are my suggestions.

I tried borderlands, and never really cared for it.

I rarely enjoy MMOs.

In fact, all skinner boxes I find dull.

And I'm not big on minecraft.

Thanks for the suggestions though. Sadly none are really for me.

We played WoW on an independent server for a bit until Dreamer got bored. Then he kept making fun of me for playing it until I stopped too.

Also tried Vindictus but it wasn't that great imo.

And alas I am still seeking friends to play minecraft with. It's great and all, but I'd have more fun with friends.

Then my suggestion is to go to...

http://www.co-optimus.com/system.php?id=4&sort=rating&direction=ASC

Its a website dedicated to strictly rating co-op games i hope it helps the link goes directly to the pc section.

Shadowgrounds is single-system co-op only, and it is kind of buggy. It was just sort of a bonus added at the last moment, you'll need a gamepad of some sort to actually play it.

Killing Floor can be a fair bit of fun, but its more meant for 4-6 players.. and is a massive, surprisingly poorly built, skinner box. Its leveling system is grindier than most mmos, and the rewards aren't great.

Half-life: Decay is pretty good. It is the co-op campaign that Gearbox made for the PS2 version of HL, ported over to PC by fans. If you enjoyed the original half-life expansions this is the same sort of thing, a fun semi-canonical romp through Black Mesa, but now with friends.
and now; back to me.

Ah. Damn, about shadowgrounds.

And I dislike half-life, to the point of near hate.

Your options are pretty limited as you seem to hate almost everything so why dont you start by mentioning some games/types of games you dont hate to narrow down some suggestions you wont respond to with "i hate that game".

P.S. maybe games aren't your thing after all :P

Ok, list of things I _like?_

Well, gee, shall we limit it to just the ones I currently own?

Portals 1 and 2.
TF2.
Marvel vs Capcom 3.
Super Smash Bros. Melee.
Assassin's Creed 2.
Rock Band 2/Guitar Hero 2.
Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions.
Ninja Gaiden 2.
The Witcher.
Batman Arkham Asylum.
Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee.
Halo 2.

Do you really want me to continue? I own and love/like (depending) many more games.

I love video games, but the issue is I've searched far and wide for multiplayer ones I enjoy, and I'm not going to buy every game just cuz it has "co-op" in the title to play it.

I'm looking for suggestions that are more heartfelt than "this is supposed to be good."

If I didn't dislike many of the gameplay design choices made in the half-life series, for example, I'd probably have looked very much into Decay.

Not on the list, but Saints Row 2. Great online co-op and on PC now.

Ya Saints Row 2 was really good and Saints Row 3 is coming out later this year more than likely well after summer but something to look forward to none the less

And the only game I saw on Co-optimus that i have played and enjoyed personally is Dead Rising 2, there is also Diablo 2 which everyone has played and Resident Evil 5 which wasn't anything special.

IMO Gears of War 2 had a really great co-op mode (both story and Horde Mode), but of course that's only on the 360. Sorry.

I liked gears of war, and they ported the first one to PC, but it's a shame they haven't ported the second, that might have been good.

..I also have Too Human, which must be at least decent in co-op? (ha), but I'm the only one with a 360.

If you like shooters I think it's a must-have for a 360 owner.

Shooters need to be amazing for me to get them these days.

The only shooter I play consistently is TF2, which I play for the community.

I've been looking at brink, but even that, with powertrain motion (an idea I love), may not push me over.
