Information is important. And as I recall, Light styled himself as a vigilante working for justice, at least at the beginning, so he could prove useful to the town, making an immediate lynch uncalled for. Not to mention that I was given the ability to investigate name or alignment, not both. The result indicates that there are likely at least three groups in the game. Town, Mafia, and Light's as a (mostly) neutral third party (at least this early in the game, depending on exact win condition).
Revealing your alignment, such as I can, supports the town at this point more than the mafia. If I were mafia and thought you dangerous, I'd target you during the night and eliminate you, sowing confusion without providing any extra information to the town due to my previous lack of activity. Assuming I am telling the truth, the town knows to keep an eye on you, and other power roles may have a better idea of where to direct their abilities. As well, the chance of lynching a mafia, assuming they decided not to lynch either of us and sort it out later, just went up.
As it stands, if you are lynched and revealed as a townie, my next will be next on the chopping block. With 15 people and likely only 3-4 mafia, the mafia is in a worse off position. If I'm lynched for trying to bluff and revealed as mafia, the mafia is even worse than in option #1. If I'm lynched and revealed as town, well I likely wouldn't have lasted much longer anyways, and the information I've provided becomes more trustworthy.
Of course, the possibility that I am mafia and pulling a massively convoluted scheme is certainly not to be discounted.
