Lying, that all depens on your viewpoint ;-) The Greenwich Meridian is not the only baseline used :-P

And now back to TF2.
I've never played it with anyone who could explain to me how the heck things are supposed to work, so I've never really "gotten it". Anybody know of a good way to start? Should I just jump in?

I just jumped in as a soldier my first time, and picked things up fairly quickly. The classes are pretty self-explanatory, and the objectives are usually to either guard or capture a series of control points, or move/stop a giant bomb.

Yeah. TF2 is pretty easy to pick up and learn the basics of. Soldier, Heavy, Demoman, and Pyro are good classes to start out. Don't be discouraged by not having some nifty loot or weapons. The base weapons are good for learning the basics of any class.

Then if you want to get into the more complex classes, there are tutorials and such built into the game to give you a taster and a bit of practice on working with them.

Hint: CTRL is crouch.

Thats about the only thing I didn't immediately pick up on from jumping into a multiplayer game. That said, it takes some time to get good enough to beat people consistently, and it gets harder as the server fills up, but you should be good enough to enjoy yourself.

There's presently about 20-24 people on the server at the moment, maybe 4-5 of whom I recognise especially since I'm the only one with a "[LRR]" tag. Is it possible the server is getting monopolized by server browsers?

Protip: Everyone on your team is a spy.
Play a Medic and you'll know it is true.
Well just play a f-ing Medic so i don't have to.
Then again it is nice not having to aim at Scouts.

That's the same reason I shotgun/flamethrower everyone.

What astounds me is when they spy-check right back...

It's funny when 3 people enter a room from different directions and everybody shoots everybody atleast once before continuing on like nothing happened.

It's more the mindset of "Ok, I'm shooting you because if you take damage I know you're a spy" and "Ok, he just fired at me and still looks like my team, so he can't be a spy"

What's strange is the sheer magnitude of people that forget that second part...

I shoot everybody instinctively, so even if you shot at me first, I'll still automatically shoot back as soon as I see you. Ammo's cheap. Also, you never know when there's a cloaked spy around.

For that kind of situation I just included a panic button into my Pyro macros: Battlecry, then spin around whilst holding fire on the flamethrower.

Works surprisingly well for suicide missions.

Even I don't have macros for TF2. Though now I'm thinking I should make some...

Nothing wrong with macros, they don't let me do anything I can't do myself.

The most complex one really is for my Engineer macros, which just lets me build/destroy a given building with one button (Turns out you can build a fair bit of ingenuity into TF2 macros, though no conditionals :(). The other Engineer one just auto-fires my wrench.

Team permitting (as in they're not all half-assed spies and 200 snipers...), I will be learning how to master a spy. So don't expect great feats from me for the next few days.

That was good fun, the unholy alliance of Master Gunner and DutchGuy was pretty unstoppable. God help us if they ever team up IRL.

I think my long-range pyro was starting to get a bit annoying by the end of it though...

How on earth do you manage a long-range Pyro?

Flare guns are VERY under-rated. They're actually my weapon of choice.

Indeed. Learn to compensate for the arc and you can give that sniper on the other side of the map a very nasty surprise.

I'm pretty happy with the detonator, same basic function as the flaregun, but LOUDER and with MORE EXPLOSIONS

I guess the draw back is that I can't explode it next to me or it hurts me so bad :(
and now; back to me.
