Steam is S-L-O-W these days...
Wonder if one or two people are pre-loading Skyrim? Nah, couldn't be...
As Yahtzee said, there is no middle finger big enough.

Playing Skyrim PC version currently. It is good to have.. 'connections.'
and by connections I mean a connection to an Aussie VPN because it already unlocked down-under.

Anyone who uses steam as they will experience slow down of service due to massive server demand?
Just sayin'.

Auth servers should be different from the downloading and authantication network, meaning the 2 shouldn't affect one another too much.
And again. Who cares (interobang)

Yes they are different servers, but I would be surprised (pleasantly so) if Valve put new games on separate servers to cater to demand, anyone downloading any game off steam will likely see a difference.

With a mega release like Skyrim I'd be surprised if they didn't actually. (or atleast put some extra units into service to cope with extra demand.)

Perhaps Origin has made me lose hope in the common sense of digital distributors, I mean seriously, they did not even have enough multiplayer servers running for the Battlefield 3 let alone enough distribution servers to keep up with bandwidth requirements.
I look forward to the Old Republic, however if the servers crash at launch no one at EA or Bioware will get a christmas break - who launches an MMO on the 22nd of December?

To be fair there have been what, two MAJOR game releases this week ALONE via Steam. Thinkin' maaaaaaaaaybe that'd have something to do with it. Patience is sadly a virtue that everyone must exercise when it comes to anything related to Valve.

Look, I thought I wouldn't have to drag this out again...
Oh, and *I'm* gonna wait for them to fix all the bugs this time - it is Bethesda we're talking about here!

I would think the combined launches of Modern Warfare 3 and Skyrim would probably be responsible for the slowness.

Re: Steam is S-L-O-W these days...
And no, my 'download "SUSPENDED"' issue with Steam was not merely a 'high traffic due to holidays' cause - wiped the client off of my computer completely, reinstalled fresh and started downloading Fallout: New Vegas (again) with a Download Region of "US - Philadelphia" for a change; same thing - started at 9pm-ish, and just got suspended at 12:30am with ~9200 of 9428Mb downloaded.
At this point I'm gonna fucking give right up on Steam altogether; I've jumped through hoops, spent DAYS reinstalling and reconfiguring all manner of shit on my computer in the hopes of actually installing some of the games I've paid VALVe for, and while it'd be nice to get the funds back for games I've never been able to PLAY, it's just NOT worth my time anymore to 'throw good money after bad' for the relatively small amount of cash I've lost - I've spent WEEKS trying to just sort this LAST instance of this problem (remember all my fun back in September with DXHR?) and most recently, I wasted a day off today uninstalling Steam, defragging my hard drive (two weeks ahead of the monthly schedule) running a low-level disk scan and repair after reboot, then reinstall Steam (twice; some kind of glitch halted the first attempt, but a 'repair' finished things fine...or so it seemed), and then spent 3 hours attempting to download F:NV only to get 97% transferred and STEAM ITSELF HALTING FOR NO REASON THAT EVEN SUPPORT CAN EXPLAIN.
Another reason I'm not raising a holy stink with Gabe & Co. is because this affects maybe five or six games out of at least a score I have from Steam (TF2 had joined the list, but it magically resumed d/l and completed just before I hauled everything off; didn't try starting it - maybe it would've needed a patch/update that would have got suspended during download).
Yet another reason I don't waste my time is, according to all sources I can find, I am one of only four Steam users that has stated this 'SUSPENDED' download issue has afflicted; even given a ratio of 10 silent people for every vocal complaint, that's STILL less than fifty people out of the entire Steam userbase - this may be a critical issue for me, but it's not even a grain of sand on the beach for VALVe, and it's unrealistic to expect any timely devotion of manpower when other, larger issues are afoot.
So fuckit; I'll check the 'small games' that used to work like Dungeons of Dredmor, Audiosurf and Costume Quest, and maybe FO3 will continue to work, or maybe it'll join my 'update limbo' club, but from here on out I'm not getting anything new through Steam. Even if I'm considering purchasing from a different source, I'll ask if Steam is related for updates/authentication and refuse purchase if it is. My loss, but as I said only a fool would "continue to do the same thing over and over and expect a different result."
