Did that really come out that long ago
I was just, as I often do, browsing cheap games when I noticed a disturbing theme - these great games that only came out a couple of years ago in my mind actually came out a decade ago.
Can anyone believe Beyond Good and Evil is 8 years old now? Same for PoP Sands of Time and Knights of the Old republic.
Halo is 10, Fable 7, Shadow of the Colossus 6, Wind Waker 9, Serious Sam 10 - Age of Empires is 14 years old - 14!
Anyone else find this shocking or just me? Or any games on your shelves that are older than you first thought?

I have enough trouble trying to get my head around the fact that I'm over two decades old. I can remember dial up, heck I can remember before the net. I can remember VCRs and floppy disks. I feel old so I'm gonna stop now.

I find it shocking when I remember just how old some of the Final Fantasy series is now. Hell, even thinking about the fact I remember when Final Fantasy VIII came out makes me stop and go, "Dammit....I'm REALLY gettin' old now." =.=;

I can clearly remember an advert for the atari 2600 which proudly proclaimed that it could be bought for "under £50" (actually £49.99). £50 nowadays would just about get you a single game.

Pokemon, Gauntlet Legends, Mario Kart 64 and Goldeneye were massive parts of my childhood. They range from 13 to 16 years old. My god. Also, not a video game but plastic Lego bricks are around 70 years old.

Pokémon came out the year I was born. That will always be weird to me.

I still use a VCR (as I don't have a laserdisk, it's my only way to watch Star Wars), and I'm pretty sure I still have a box of floppies around somewhere.
I still remember the original Quake, Doom, and Duke Nukem 3D. Hard to believe it was so long ago.

Oh gods, I remember the original Pokemon games coming out. I think I still have my gameboy somewhere too.
Hell it makes me feel feckin' ANCIENT when I think about having played the original Super Mario Bros ... on the SNES ... T.T'
Tangently....upon reading Dibria's last post I instantly had the mental image of him slapping Geoff with a white glove. Yeah, my mind works in STRANGE ways.

I find Wind Waker being 9 years old horrifying me. I remember it coming out during my key stage 3 SATs and my mate being dead excited and using the plot for the English imaginative essay writing. I got the Wind Waker and a Gamecube the Christmas after and loved it. That fact is what makes me feel old.
I empathise with the person who was born when Pokemon started. Must be weird being born when gaming because more of a mainstream culture. I was born in a year of nothing significant happening except for the Berlin wall being felled (1989).
Scary thought that in a few years people who were born in the turn of the new Millennium will become active internet users (teenagers).

I did data entry during the summer for a school database.
I was inputting data for children born in 2004. That shouldn't be possible.

Sadly I've had one too many encounters with this "new generation" and that's just in Guild Wars alone.
It's kind of depressing when you think that the younger generation won't get to experience these (actually pretty damn awesome) old school titles.

The one that always makes me feel old isn't a game, it's remembering that Revenge of the Sith came out in 2005... how has it been six years already?
Re: Did that really come out that long ago
I remember buying a game (or more specifically getting my Dad to buy a game) mail order, back when demos of games had the screen come up upon exiting which gave you an address and phone number where you could order the game from, and then it arriving a couple of weeks later on several floppy disks.
For those interested, the game in question was Xargon, from back in the era when Epic made MegaGames!

YES! I had entirely forgotten about that, don't think I ever actually sent off for one though. I seem to remember having a copy of a demo for some DOS game that the address was in America - back in those days sending things to the states from the UK was a much bigger deal.

Two weeks ago, I was at my comic book store playing in a 4 person game, and I mentioned how it was still weird to me to think that I started high school in 1999,
One of the girls playing in the game pointed out that that was the same year she was born. It wrinkled my brain.
As for games, Fallout came out in 1997, and that confuses me to no end.
This is why we can't have nice things.
Re: Did that really come out that long ago
i just got rid of my Atari 2600 last year (broken one of course)
and luckily i managed to buy a "brand new" sega genesis last week, just to remember old times (it cost me an entire 12 dollars)
i still have the NES and a box full of floppy disks , and that old VCR which work just fine : )

You say that but one of the first things I did when we got the internet was start playing old games, I was too young to have a C64 but emulators were 10 a penny and the game files at only a few hundred kilobytes were downloadable in under 10 minutes!
I never had a nintendo system until the gamecube so I was all about playing Metroid and Mario etc. once I had a computer powerful enough to cope with a snes emulator.
That said I feel that the small download size of the games probably was the deciding factor in why I played those games and when I have kids and they want to download a 'retro' game like Mass Effect it will take seconds, but then again so will Mass Effect 27 and Modern Warfare 78 so why would they bother with those ugly, unpolished early titles?

When I was young, I thought the best game ever was Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?
It came out in 1985. Twenty one years ago.
Carmen Sandiego, as a franchise, is old enough to drink now.
Enjoy the fact.

Re: Did that really come out that long ago
It's always weird to me when I talk to or hang out with people born in the 90s. I hear their birthday and I'm like "but... you're a kid..." and yet they're not. I feel like 2000 was a couple of years ago. I remember the original Zelda games on the first NES. I remember phones where you turn-dial the number. And yes, a lot of games are much older than I would expect them to be.
