League of Legends

Postby Volafortis » 23 Jul 2012, 23:39

I'm surprised there isn't a thread yet for League of Legends, other than a super old one that felt pointless to necro, and I feel the game is different enough from Dota to warrant it's own thread (not to mention the Dota sticky is basically dead anyway)

So, anyone play LoL?

I'm level 30, name Volafortis

I tried it but since HoN started releasing new heroes often and DotA2 existed, my need to play LoL for the sake of trying new heroes was resolved.

I enjoyed playing ball girl but I get raged at for playing her supportive.
I get enough aggro from HoN and DotA2 as it is :(

Level 6/7 bluebottleblues; but uninstalled.

You're probably banned because you were honest and GMs frown upon honesty in online games. Everyone must play Ring-a-Ring-a-Roses and not speak their minds!

I play. I recently reached level 30 but haven't started playing ranked yet - I don't feel ready. Plus I fear the likes of Bard.

I haven't played in a while, but I wouldn't mind jumping back in and playing a few games (after I get past the presumably massive update, that is).

Level 30, LackingSanity, played ranked twice to resounding defeats.

Yeah, I haven't quite taken the plunge into ranked yet, probably going to wait until I get a few more wins in.

Nah, almost every ban I've got is from leaving.

I know what you mean.
I was playing Mid Wars in Heroes of Newerth as a hero who pushes the lane and has a strong initiation for team fights. I had to spend the first 5 levels repeatedly killing this single neutral camp with my minions in till I got my Ultimate, as I was useless otherwise. The advantage of this is that I get to level 6 before the enemy and my team have a level advantage by receiving 20% extra experience. Unfortunately they didn't understand basic arithmatics of 4 is less than 5 and decided to be very aggressive. Not only were the constant fights 4v5, but if I had even been there I couldn't do much than increase their armour on a single target by 4 and a have a miserable health regeneration (my hero works around trees and there's very few trees in the middle of the map where the action happens).

When I was 6, I did come mid to initiate with help from an invisibility rune. Unfortunately my team who were screaming for me to come and take part, couldn't be bothered to follow up. This basically repeated in till we lost and it was all my fault that they were so awful. Our player-bases aren't so dissimilar :D

That seems to be the main thing Dota, HoN, and LoL all have in common. The assholes, lol.

I normally take AP mid in LoL, but lately I've been finding myself branching into all of the roles to conform to whatever the team needs, and can play any role with sufficient proficiency, and now my goal is to just get to the point where I can play any role well enough to do well in ranked.

That's my attitude to this genre. With HoN I can compently play 90% of the hero pool. And I am pretty decent at all roles (specialised in Jungling or Supporting). It's just my lack of experience of other roles affects my performance in that area. I'm used to hardcore farming or hardcore support/pushing/defending. I'm not that good at gauging when to farm and when to help in a gank/team fight. Hence why my favourite 'carries' (farmers) are ones that have to spend a large chunk of time farming or ones with the ability to instanty assist in any scuffles.
(I'm trying to not turn this into a HoN thread and keeping it objective since I'm sure all core mechanics and principles are the same, just with different shape and type of cogs).

In DotA2 I like taking mid because you're pretty much going to be against an idiot. And if you're not, it's against a stupidly skilled player which would have stomped anyone anyway. In HoN I'm only good mid if I am a pusher. You basically take advantage of the enemy leaving mid to gank/roam and then you push the lane and assasinate the tower quickly.

Re: League of Legends

Postby the_lone_bard » 25 Jul 2012, 07:09

I can play all lanes, My best is by far Cait bot, but I occasionally get bored and screw around in new positions.

But sometimes I just wish I could vote-kick people on my team. When someone goes 0/50/0 I keep my mouth shut (I usually just don't talk during games.) but god damn if some people don't go looking for a fight.

First pick call a lane, select champ, someone else decides they want your lane, so they take a champ for that lane, tell you to get fucked then as soon as the game starts go bot support with them and whinge the entire time about how I'm the noob.

That is the sort of shit that got me at one stage to 200 elo ranked. Because before they put in auto ban on leavers I'd just leave dickheads like that to play 4v5. I still do, thus spending most of my time banned.
Which is really annoying because if I could get 4 other people, who can just keep their mouths shut when things go bad and who are even half as good as me (Not implying I'm great, though I am, just that I don't want ultra skills from my team.)then I'd be happy. And I'd probably be in the above average ELO rankings in ranked as opposed to the below bad levels that I am now. Thus why I no longer play ranked, just normal draft mode.

And that got kinda ranty and out of hand, since all I came in here to say is that I know what ya mean man, when I played HoN (Before it went P2P) I used to destroy as Hellbringer mid or Zephyr jungle.
Though even though I have HoN and DoTa2 now, I just prefer LoL I guess. If nothing else I've adjusted to having a camera view of more than 3ft in any given direction.

Hellbringer mid you have the advantage of the general playerbase aren't sure what to expect out of you. I love that hero. You have shocking amount of gankability if you're very good at manoeuvring Malphas.

I'm a decent Mid in LoL. I find the mana pools in LoL are more generous as well as regen so I enjoy the luxury of being able to regularly last-hit and harass. My problem however is that I don't know the map well or 'how you play the map'. I can lane and team-fight well. In LoL i'm inexperienced with neutral farming and roaming.

I bounce around which champions I play. At the beginning I only played AD carries, then some melee bruisers (I'm not very good at them) then a bunch of mage-types (I like Morg and Orianna), and now I'm branching into tanks, though lately I've been playing Nidalee a lot. :P

I figure once I figure out tanks then it's on to supports. Maybe I'll come back to melee bruisers.

Oh, phunny story: played a game last night where I was in lane with a Gangplank who stayed around way too long on many occasions while he was extremely low. He fed like crazy, and then later yelled at our Zyra for ksing, who had over 20 kills and was carrying us to victory. Then he went on to say he had been ksed 21 times (equal to the number of his assists)

Zyra, quite rightly, called him a moron.

In LoL do you have a sort of tier system with heroes of who requires most farm? Like in HoN we have hard-carries who under no circumstance you should complain if they KS off you because in the grand scheme of things it's in your best interest for them to get the gold, likewise with neutral mob kills.

In the current meta, AD carries generally require the most farm as they're supposed to carry you to victory late-game. As such, they're usually sent bottom lane and accompanied by a support to keep them alive and help them farm/rack up kills.

Neutral mob kills are mostly for the jungler, but sometimes it's wise to give certain champs certain buffs (mana-starved champs often benefit from blue buff, etc)

Well, typically, if your team members and composition are good, you have an AD bruiser solo top, so they get an entire lane of farm to themself, an AP carry mid, who gets the whole lane of farm to themself, a ranged AD bottom that takes all the farm (so they get an entire lane to themself), except they have a support that shouldn't last hit AT ALL. Then you have a jungler, which is usually either an AD carry or tank, depending on what kind of support you have, and they get creep kills out of the jungle, obviously.

So, in theory, you get 3 champs that should have even levels of farm. Most of the time, you try to avoid "kill stealing" and rather practice "kill securing"

However, if one of your carries is pulling ahead, or the opposing team just can't deal with one of your team, you should actively try to give that player kills, so they can carry harder, and build stronger to compensate for the additional aggro they'll be pulling in team fights.

TLDR: People shouldn't QQ about kill steals unless someone who's 0/7 or a support/tank does it. But any kind of carry that's doing halfway decent taking a kill is fine.

I do find it funny when players complain about someone ksing when the kser has an awful KDR for that game. Yes you need a carry, but it doesn't help having a very un-farmed team member who'll just provide free gold to the enemy.
I find a lot of players are very, short sighted in these games. They don't think about the broad picture like:

Player A dies a lot at start of the game but also gains some kills and assists, but overall dies the most of anyone by a great distance.
Player A recovers lost farm and starts gaining kills in later game and ends with good KDR.

Players B stays alive in start of game and gets a handful of assists.
Players B dies a lot in later game because enemy is fed by Player A at the start and cause a snow-ball effect. Players B ends with awful KDR.

Apparently it's Player B's fault if the team loses, when technically Player A was the core reason. What happens in the start often dictates the outcome of the game. Also, the longer the game lasts, the easier it is to see the cracks in a player's skill. Longer ress timers are one and secondly, when it's stale-mate, the better players shine whilst the bull-headed die.

Mostly true about longer games.

My problem with games that go over 40 minutes (Generally if they're going 40+ they're going about an hour.) is that every second after that marker everyone turns into more of a feral dog. Which gives me a higher chance of ignore listing them, which means no co-ordination which means more risk for me to get caught out and spend another 60 seconds in spawn.

What's annoying is when you are on a team of big egos who are well farmed and phat. But the enemy has this one hero with some-sort of sneaky ability. Of course your team has no brain to build an item to counter stealth, and nor do you have the farm to. So it's 45min mark+ with long ress timers and you're conquesting and your team runs off to chase and kill this sole hero, whilst the enemy stealthy hero sneaks up and starts stabbing you. Of course your team won't come and help you because they have tunnel sight. Or they believe that if they get the kill, it doesn't matter if the enemy gets one.

I swear the vast majority of players don't understand that keeping your team alive>keeping the enemy dead. Especially if you're in the lead. Give them any room to catch up and you're about to have a thrown game.

Yeah, Oracles elixer, grants true sight until you die at which point it ceases to exist, best brought on support or otherwise tanky champs (Or if you are fed to the point of 3shoting everyone on their team) as it costs 400gold.

Also true sight wards that cost 150 gold, double a normal vision ward and reveal a nice area.

Also Eve just got remade so that she now has permanant invisibillity ALA Nighthound but if she gets within a certain range of an enemy champion they spot her and break her stealth until she moves out of range.

Ya know, to prevent what I used to do as Nighthound and just stand next to enemy champs gaining xp while waiting for an opportunity to kill them all.
