Or at the very least, he's ambitious with no follow-through.

What's going on with Molyneux these days?

Re: Gaming General Chat Thread
It's been two years since his Curiosity Cube nonsense, and he still hasn't given the winner his promised prize, which was a major role in the development of Molyneux's next game Godus, which (shockingly!) won't be living up to any of Molyneux's other promises either.
Of course Molyneux has since twisted the narrative from "Serial liar misleads thousands for the billionth time" to "gee, the press sure are mean to me!"

I think I also have problems with follow-through on things. However, that's why I try to never promise too many things on a timetable.

Re: Gaming General Chat Thread
Apparently he got over half a million pounds via Kickstarter to develop Godus, a game he ended up publishing for smartphones before moving on towards another project and delegating Godus' PC development to some guy. It's been 18 months since that, and by Molyneux's estimate it'll be another 9 months before Kickstarter backers see their investment "maybe" come to fruition.
And he "will not speak to the press again".

What a disappointment.

Re: Gaming General Chat Thread
He's hardly unique in screwing up a Kickstarter project, he's just very high profile (and given his experience in the Games industry, should know how to better handle a project...on the other hand, remember all the jokes we've made about Molyneux over the past 27 years - what's their common denominator again?). From what I've seen of the RPS interview, I wouldn't want to speak to the press again either after that.

Re: Gaming General Chat Thread
That interview was inexcusably unprofessional, regardless of what we think of Molyneux.
I'm personally a-okay with Peter never talking to the press again, because he's typically full of shit.
Of course, I wouldn't say that to his face if I represented a prominent member of the gaming press, now would I.

Re: Gaming General Chat Thread
Yeah....
One last parting shot about Petey:
To be fair, he thinks big, and talks big, and if he (or sometimes the sheer technology available) is/was capable of delivering on these promises, he'd be lauded (fairly) much more than he is. He just can't physically deliver what he WANTS to...and just hasn't learned (in a really LONG time) to temper his promises to what he CAN deliver.
tl;dr? He is credited with "creating the god game genre". That is basically all we need to say about it all on SO many levels.

Is this the one you got the parts for yourself?
Regardless, that news in itself is awesome! : )

Bought it from a shop because I broke my laptop trying to clean the fan. It made me insecure about my ability around a set of kit that costs £800.
This system plays WoW and Skyrim happily on HIGH/VERY HIGH in everything happily. So, I think this was a fine purchase really.

I beat Super Mario 3D Land. Took me about a day to 100% it. Overall, it was fun. The controls are a little clunky. And I'm not a fan of the circle pad for games like this. But it's still a solid Mario game.
It's also a very easy Mario game. I died about 130 times. Roughly 30-40 of those were during the last level. For a platformer where falling means instant-death, that isn't a lot I feel spread over about 80 levels that I played through twice each. I also ended up having over 400 lives without any real life grinding.

Re: Gaming General Chat Thread
Something that bothered me in the chat the other night about diversity in video games - the idea that AAA studios have to use "Steve"s, as anything else is too risky.
And I'm sorry, but that is just complete nonsense.
We live in a global marketplace - you can put out a product today that can be bought and sold in China, or India, or Pakistan, or Indonesia. South Korea and Japan are huge video game markets by themselves. Many of the countries in East Asia and the Pacific Rim have populations at least as large as the United States, and some (such as China) have populations many times larger.
Having a diverse cast of main player characters is a good way to get penetration into this global market. Having your player character always be a "Steve" is a good way to lock yourself out of these markets.
With AAA titles as expensive as they are, those global markets are important. This makes sticking with "Steve" the risky strategy, rather than the safe one.

Re: Gaming General Chat Thread
You and I know this. It's likely that the developers, the ones working on the games, know this.Garwulf wrote:Something that bothered me in the chat the other night about diversity in video games - the idea that AAA studios have to use "Steve"s, as anything else is too risky.

The question is "Do the publishers know this?" They're the ones that front the money to pay for this. They really only care about 3 words: "Return on Investment"
If the people fronting the money either don't know much about gaming or still have the out-dated idea that the main market for video games are white male teens with power fantasies, then the developers may have to choose between the two options of "Making Steve the protagonist" and "not getting the money to make this game at all."
The publishers look at the numbers and they know that Steve "works" from that stand-point. Steve is a proven method of separating consumers from their money. It's worked before. Other methods are more risky, as they haven't been tried as much (at least in their minds). It's an old "stick with what works" mindset.
Luckily, we can see things changing... Publishers opening up to more diversity... Some game developers bypassing publishers altogether with KickStarter...
Unluckily, the change is very slow.
Also, there is unfortunately still a racist streak in some circles of gaming. You put a white or Asian person person in the game? Oh they're fine. They're light enough. As long as you keep those brown people to a minimum.

I don't know. Right after seeing the trailer I found out that there had been another Hitman movie before the one coming now, and that it was a generic action movie. So I table flipped a second time.

Re: Gaming General Chat Thread
I have an interesting situation with my new PC.
It can play all my games on highest setting with no FPS loss.
Which means I am overwhelmed by what to play in my leisure. I want to play EVERYTHING, but I can only play one thing at once. I've spent most of my time loading up games and giggling at the graphic settings then going to another game. Only thing I've been playing is WoW, GW2 and Heroes of the Storm with friends.
