Chris Roberts, the guy behind Wing Commander and Freelancer, has returned to game development to create a massive, persistent-world, multiplayer space sim. And it looks amazing.

In practice, you may have to deal with these companies directly or shop online - I will admit that I don't think there's ANYWHERE that would be selling anything worthy of a recent flight-sim in my entire province.



But yeah, this is what he wanted to do with Freelancer, but got burned out by all the 'industry' (i.e. all the parasitic middlemen that basically fuck up ANYTHING creative with their fucking 'focus groups' and bureaucratic bullshit)

Its probably Late 2015 early 2016.

The upside of it being cowdsourced is that they wont have people firing them if they dont release their game on time and that enables them to make the game they want to make. The down side is that they will never meet a single deadline ever...

Eve online is an MMORPG with combat resolution based on an player character's accumulated skills - metaphoric dice rolls to determine if you cannon fire hits that battleship. If you want to fly from one station to another, you point and click on a map, or a waypoint list and autopilot takes care of the rest.

Star Citizen/Squadron 42 is/will be a Space Sim with combat resolution based on the player's actual ability - visual accuity, manual dexterity, etc. - whether your cannon fire hits that battleship depends on whether you can literally bring your weapons to bear on the target. If you want to fly from one station to another, you actually steer your ship to do so.

...of course, this means with my aged reflexes, man/dex & declining vision, I'm gonna suck at combat.

Essentially, go play Wing Commander or Freelancer - that, LITERALLY will be be what the gameplay will be like.

Fortunately, it sounds like trading and exploration are viable advancement paths, until you can buy a carrier of your own and let us young 'uns do the actual combat.

The old X-Wing and Tie-Fighter games are also seminal examples of this type of space sim, though lacking in the commerce aspect of Privateer and Freelancer.
