I'm looking forward to the new EU4. Seeing on how well they've done CKII, I have high hopes.

Never looked at any of the older EU's, but may have to revise that opinion post-CKII

Eu3 Cronicles is definatly worth looking into (its the game + all expansions (unlike complete which only contains 3 expansions)). 2 is basically just an expansion of 1 and they are both very dated anyway.

I'd recommend the MEIOU mid for EU3, if you don't have if already.

EU3 is a good game. It's just really, really long.

Plus the economy is unforgiving. I hope EU4 follows a CKII type of simple(er) economy model than that of EU3.

I can't wait for the old gods DLC, I want to make a pagan republic that conquers the Mediterranean (which is oddly enough my only goal when playing CK2)

So I got a bit bored...

Yeah, I used events to make a baby by impregnating myself. Not sure if you can do this with men yet...

Why the Mediterranean? You want to have a nice holiday home for your Dynasty? : )

So I'm not the only one whose goal is to conquer the entire Mediterranean?

Could we turn this thread into a general Paradox thread? so as not to limit it just to Ck2 when there are the EU,VIC and HOI games as well.

Sure, I don't see why not.

OK, I need to know now; how the hell did you do that whole 'impregnating yourself' business?

Re: Crusader Kings II (and General Paradox Thread)

Voodoo and other pagan rituals.

...

Okay, its simply a corruption of the "Affair" event you can trigger. Simply you trigger the event after the initial proposal to have an affair with your lord (Event 450), and the next event (Event 451) is you getting pregnant from that affair.

Now, because you didn't trigger event 450, the impregnator and impregnated is the same, I.E you. So you get an event that says something like "it's good to be count/duke/king etc" and a little later you get one that announces your pregnancy out of wedlock.

The resulting child is therefore a bastard, but you lose -50 piety and -100 prestige for it being while unmarried, not just out of wedlock.

So basically, bring up the console and type in "event 451" and you should get a child that you're both the mother and father. I don't know if it works with males, but I assume it works just the same. Since I think males just can't trigger pregnancy events, not sure if it prevents them from having a child or if they just permanently have the "pregnancy" trait.

EDIT: Also, I don't know if you can get the "imbred" trait from doing this too often over many generations, I've done it over 4 so far and nothing like that has happened. Also not sure how well traits like "Strong" and "Genius" are genetic passed on.

From Victoria 2. My first game (Sweden->Scandinavia) after they introduced the Great wars feature, and then this started.

I...uh...what?! XD

You just reminded be that I had this screenshot lying around.

It's not the most ridiculous thing I've done in Victoria 2; that would be the time I ported a Holy Roman Empire save over from Europa Universalis 3.

I don't have a screenshot of that handy, so instead here's one from a Darkest Hour/Kaiserreich game. This one's strange for two reasons. :P

So what the hell is the game anyway? is it more Total War? or Patrician? If that's a good enough scale.

I don't know Patrician so I can't say.

I would guess that its somewhere inbetween. Like all PDS games (I assume you are asking about Crusader Kings 2) its a grand strategy gamethat takes place mostly on the world map. There are no TW style battles, as its all strategic and takes place on the world map. Each game tends to have a focus outside of your general war and conquest type of games. In CK2 that is dominantly dynasty building as you don't actually controll a nation as much as the dynasty that controlls the nation. Its a lot of intrigue and drama that can make game of thrones pale in comparason (although with less dragons and only slightly less incest) and it really makes every game you play a story.

As for the PDS games as a whole.
CK2 is set between 1066 and mid 15:th century (although the upcomming expansion will set the starting date back by almost 200 years)

Europa Universalis 3 (Cronicles) takes place between 1399 and 1820 and is focused a lot more about nation building and colonisation.

Victoria 2 goes from 1836 to 1936 and is about empire building and revolutions.

Hearts of Iron (2 or 3, either is good but I prefere 2 or darkest hour) continues from 1936 to 1964 and is of course based around WW2 and possibly WW3.

Has anyone tried the new 1.03 beta patch for Darkest Hour yet? Among other things, they've added casualty modelling, light carriers, a couple of new battle scenarios (including the Russo Japanese War), and heavy cruisers are apparently no longer capital ships (makes sense historically, apparently they were not considered such during WWII).

I have not, I was considdering getting teh Kaiserreich mod and it didn't appear to be compatable with the beta (I didn't though).

Weren't light carriers already in darkest hour?

As for the tripple graet war thing. If I recall correctly (been over a year since that happened) Russia attacked Austria to take back a core they lost earlier which started the first great war. I sat by and waited to see what happened and as the war dragged on I attacked russia to take back Finland, dragging the US with me into the new second great war. If I recall correctly I then joined in an alliance with Itay who then decided to attack Austria to take some cores back.

So yeah, basically all of europe except Prussia and teh iberian nations were fighting eachother, and then the US joined in for good meassure

No, what DH already had were escort carriers (CVE); now there is a new light carrier (CVL) unit type. CVLs were deployed alongside fleet carriers (CV), while CVEs were used in shipping defence and submarine hunting.

So being a Mac owner I've been left waiting for SimCity 5 to make it's way over as promised by Maxis/EA. In the meantime I've ended up watching a couple live streams and lets plays of the game - something I generally really don't like doing. In the midst of all that I stumbled across a guy's recorded tream on youtube, in which he mentioned he did lots of other lets plays for the likes of the Civ and paradox games. So I go and start watching one of his CK2 lets plays and my understanding of the game mechanics becomes 500% clearer than the ludicrously wordy "tutorial" in the game itself.

Now feel like I could actually play the damn game without feeling overwhelmed with information :)

quill18, he seems pretty popular (by non-CoD/Starcraft/LoL standards I'm assuming), but not really being a frequenter of that scene I don't know how his numbers really compare to others.
