E3 2013

Figured there might as well be a thread for all the excitement/disappointment/hate of this year's E3. At time of writing Microsoft's press conference is starting in half an hour. I expect answers but I don't expect to like those answers.

So, that conference sure didn't sell me an Xbox One.

Let's see if Sony can do better?

Same on this end. It's a bit more appealing now with how xbox live gold works, even if it's only for gold members which I am not. But not only did they completely avoid the controversy during release (which was expected) but it seems that they expect us to just accept it.

Also as far as the games they showed go I'm starting to wonder what's worse: QTE's or over reliance on scripted sequences.

I have to agree when watching I was really hoping they would set aside some time to talk and make an announcement about all of the blunders that have been floating around the internet. But at least I have to appreciate that i didn't hear the word TV said to many times during the presentation. But with the current state of affairs I'm gonna be holding on to my xbox360 for as long as possible.

Rhianna Pratchett not involved with, or even approached about, Mirrors Edge 2.

Considering there's a new generation of consoles coming out soon I'm surprised how game-centric this E3 has been.

I am still failing to see how the xbone will cool my water.

Yep, PS4 just f'ckin owned Microsoft and I loved every second of it.

I'm not really definitively sold on either console.

One is Big Brother, the other is a slantybox.

Ehhhh.

That was easily one of the best pressers I've ever seen.

Like DAMN that was harsh beats.

It stopped being funny after a while and just became torture porn. Then it got funny again.

There's still the matter of backwards compatibility which they didn't address and that the crowd essentially cheered for Sony going about business as usual because they doesn't currently impose any restrictions but compared to the Xbone Sony fucking slayed it.

Yes, it was "we're doing the same thing as ever, but charging you for online play"

That was still sick beats, by comparison.

Definitely. I did not expect to be this thrilled by Sony so fair play to them.

However, I know there's mixed views on the matter and that they haven't mentioned anything in nearly a year but despite the PS4 looking like the best option for the general gaming populace I still personally want to see what Valve is doing with the Steam Box. I know it's supposed to be a "PC for the living room" and I doubt it will be a competitor to the PS4 (or even marketed as such) but I imagine it'll do better than the Xbone.

Except I think the Xbone is going to do pretty well honestly. Maybe not with the 'hardcore' gamers due to the many things they've mentioned that are bad. But I think they're going to hit the casual market much more then any of the other systems. I'm think they're trying to go the 'Wii' route. Except using the fact it's a multimedia device rather than the gimmick 'toy' for lack of a better word.

Here's what I got out of the conference:

blah blah blah Final Fantasy XV blah blah blah Kingdom Hearts III

And then I didn't hear anything else because my brain melted out of my head. So props to Sony for that, I guess.

Insert your favorite "beating a blind man in a game of I Spy" joke here.

Except for the part where they stealthily snuck in the fact that they're charging for multiplayer right after their MS bashing.

Other than that however, yeah.. They win. They won the indie market, their console is smaller, more powerful and cheaper, and they don't have awful DRM.

I feel I should clarify I was not nor am I taking sides. I just found the whole ordeal quite humorous.

Hmm, the fact that I can buy used games 10 or 20 years down the line pushes me firmly in the direction of PS4. I'm absolutely a retro gamer, and longevity's a real issue for me with new consoles, as is backwards compatibility. WiiU wins for backwards compatibility, but I won't buy one unless there's something absolutely compelling. PS4 is second, because they don't have a mechanism that potentially prevents me from using software I've legitimately purchased, thus enabling secondhand games when they aren't even remotely available at retail any longer. XBOne pretty much doesn't even fit into my ecosystem.

I might buy a used 360 at some point. The red ring isn't too hard to fix.

I feel like the PS4 isn't really all that much different from the PS3. It just seems like a $400 spec upgrade. I guess it's got a few extra features, but I barely know any of them.

I've already preordered the Xbox One, pretty much for the Controller, Dead Rising 3, My Achievements, Minecraft, and Ryse. Maybe, Titanfall, Quantum Break and Sunset Overdrive.

Dead Rising 3 is one of the only reasons I will likely eventually pick up a Xbone at the moment. I love the Dead Rising series. DR2 was great, even if DR1 was only pretty good (I played it in SD at the time, so... yea...). The controller seems like a nice little bonus, though does anyone know if it's an extra controller or just the one that comes with the system? If it's the former, that's actually pretty cool. If it's the latter, it's pretty meh. Though I wonder if they'll be worth something in the future.

Also, the exclusive achievement for being one of the day-1 conversions thing is completely silly.

I'm holding my breath on Dead Rising 3. In the past, unless MS was publishing Japanese devs tend not to go for full exclusivity on the xbox, instead going simply for a timed exclusivity period (wherein they were not allowed to mention the fact it was only a timed exclusive)

I wouldn't be surprised if Dead Rising 3 made it to the PS4 at some later date with extra content in tow.

Likewise there is a good chance that Quantum Break will come to the PC "eventually"

As of now, they're saying it's going to be an exclusive. So I wouldn't hold your breath. If it does come out later, it'll likely be much later as a GotY-type package. I doubt it'll get any exclusive content, due to Microsoft likely paying them lots of money to be exclusive. Even if it does, I don't intend to buy a PS4 anytime soon either, so the point becomes moot.

I'd like to see Quantum Break on PC though, since that's the platform I'll have for a while into the next generation. I doubt it'll happen, but it'd be nice.

Nintendo paid Capcom a lot of money for Resident Evil 4 exclusivity, and then it came out on the PS2 with extra, exclusive content. This is something that has already gone down in the past with Capcom and "exclusive" zombie games, and so I have no real problem waiting.

Edited to sound like less of a toolbox
