Surely shitty specs will make people pirate the game because users want to know if the game will actually run on their system or not?

Uh... the thing James has been playing on-stream, you mean? The thing that LRL chat got semi-addicted to? The thing I have running in another tab as we speak? The thing that you should probably get from the original site instead of a compilation site?

Hah, yeah, it kind of looks like it! (Sorry about the swearing last night, but I was just surprised at the resemblance to the crapshots episode and resulting game.) Yup, I guess I do need another time vortex... *eyes the various games, books, projects, and other things scattered across her computer and desk* yup, totally do. ;)

It's fun when you're trying to avoid going to bed.
Monetization is EVIL though.

Am I just missing the monetization you're seeing?

It's not on the main site, but on the aggregate sites (Kongregate, New Grounds, etc.) you can buy Hero Souls in exchange for money.

Actually, if you insist on wanting to buy them you can always export your savegame on the main site (something you should do regularly anyway to back it up since it's currently just in a cookie storage), import it on one of the aggregate sites, buy the things and export it back.

It's... odd, but it works.

That is weird, but I was saying it sucks that they're monetizing like that, as I wouldn't monetize an idle game.

The SWTOR monetization is strange.

SUB for or pay to unlock/pay to access.
Pay for access to end game raids (weird but, I suppose fair).
Pay to unlock the ability to change appearance of companions (ok cosmetic. Shame it's inbuilt in the base of the game so when you complete the starting area, an item to change your companion's appearance is shove on you).
Cap on money (haven't met it yet. Wasn't a major issue in DCUO unless you really gave a toss about completionism).
The ability to hide your head slot (a very weird thing).

But then, at level 20 they tax your exp gain. You have normal exp gain until level 20.

This is weird. They give you something and take it away.

Apparently you can still outlevel the narrative even with this handicap, just it's an annoying thing. They give and take away.

Games like Rift and GW2 put F2P MMOs to shame. So I don't see why more games can't be like that. Oh yeah, because they voice acted every NPC in SWTOR and they thought they could steal a large chunk of the nostalgia-lassoed World of Warcraft players.

Buy 2 get 1 free at Target. Awesome. Picked up Bayonetta 2, Civilization: Beyond Earth, and Evil Within for $120. Evil Within was for PC, cause I thought my PC could handle it. Nope.jpeg. Barely don't meet minimum specs and my demo keeps crashing (which seems to be a common issue but I don't want to risk not being able to return it). Went to return it for the 360 version. Can't do it. I would have to return it then pay $18 for the 360 version. :/

Well, I guess I'm just going to return it and get it for $25 on Black Friday.

Didn't that just come out a month ago? And Black Friday is... this month, right?
Assuming it's $60 at launch that's one hell of a mark-down in less than two months...
Why would anybody still buy games at launch?

To be fair, the main reason I picked up Bayonetta 2 was it just came out. I don't think it's been on any Black Friday ad. And since it's PC only, I don't think Civ: Beyond Earth will get a huge markdown.

But Black Friday is a bit of a bigger deal. Also, actual exclusives normally hold value longer from my experience.

I only buy games at launch that either have pre-order bonuses (like figurines or artbooks) or if it's one I really, really want (i.e. Metal Gear Solid games).

Most I wait until they come down in price via pre-owned, or for some of the yearly games (mostly FIFA games) I wait until the next year comes out, as the pre-owned drops from around £30 to £10 or less.

The game would have to be phenomenal or a sequel to a game I loved for me to buy it at launch. I really wanted Destiny. Will not buy it until it comes to PC.

Seriously. Analogue sticks for a shooter. Nope.

Dreading avoiding Dragon Age Inquisition details on social places on the internet. My laptop won't be able to run it (guessing) and I need to avoid spoilers.

I played Mass Effect 3 solidly since its launch and I still got the ending semi-spoilt.

The only games I normally buy on or near launch are:

Nintendo games, due to the fact they rarely drop much for quite a while
Games I'm excited for and are confident about the quality of like Mass Effect 3
Games that aren't too expensive/go on sale
I want to support the game/developer/choices the game made

Bayonetta 2 was actually largely due to the last fact. I'm not a huge fan of the kind of hack-and-slash genre. But I wanted to support a third-party developer that decided to exclusively support a system that's been having problems with getting third-party games. Plus, they did something I LOVE by including the first Bayonetta with the game for "free." Which is important to me because I never played much of the first.

I doubt/hope that DA:I won't become as spoiled as ME3. The reason ME3 got so spoiled so quickly was due to the ending being so bad to many people. For some reason, that made spoiling it not as big of a deal to a decent number of people.

Then again, I don't know your social network.

Actually, I've never actually heard what this supposedly terrible ending to ME3 is. I intend to play the game some day so don't want it spoiled, but I found it relatively easy to avoid spoilers online; and my IRL friends at the time apparently didn't play much Mass Effect.

My social network is Facebook, Twitter and these forums.

I made the mistake during ME3 play of popping onto Mumble in between gameplay breaks (for me it was an emotionally intense game, so I had to pace my play).

Rift.

Rift has a new expansion. With it, new souls (class trees).
Healing Rogue.
Healing Warrior.
Support Cleric.
Tank Mage.

I looked on the website about unlocking these and I didn't see anything. I naively assumed "download the game, log in, they're unlocked".

So I did that.
5 hours later, I log into the game and I'm like "where are these souls?"

I ask in general chat, nothing.

I Google, nothing.
I Google again, and after a lot of digging I discover it's in the in-game shop with a stupid thumbnail icon with an obscure name.

~£20+ to unlock these skills. I'm kinda, annoyed? The game of Rift has been good at being a fair F2P game with microtransactions. Anything of power you can acquire through play. But these 4 gates souls erks me. I feel £20 is a bit steep (for me, as I don't actively play the game), and it's £20 for access to these roles which the classes don't have access to.

No rogues can heal, warriors heal, mages tank or clerics support otherwise.

It's annoying. I can just play SWTOR if I want to heal with a character with "energy" and "combo points". That's £0.
-
Maybe if I had disposable income or a guarentee I'd get heavily involved in the game I wouldn't mind.

It's annoying being annoyed at my lack of money. There's better things to be concerned about, but real life thinks otherwise.

It doesn't look likely from what I've seen on gaming media sites. It is pretty demanding.
