Mass Effect 3 was fine. Some shadings was funky, but it worked. That was 2 years ago. Shame.

Not much feels worse than losing a 6 hour game of Civilization (in this case Beyond Earth) 3 turns before you would have won.

Losing Civ game 3 turns before you would have won, because the AI has been 1 turn ahead on Wonder production the entire game?

Memory is an interesting thing.
You can effectively edit what happened.
Meaning, if you will never encounter any witnesses or evidence again, you can choose to turn any close wins into actual wins. I do that with MOBAs.
A match my team should have won but lost due to something petty, I just remember, differently.

I had a game recently where I had pulled out to an impressive lead over my rivals (as tends to happen on "Settler" difficulty). At this point, my victory was assured... I had culture generating at full steam, a sizeable treasury for pulling an army out of thin air if need be, or I could bugger off into space forever.
(NEXT TURN)
"You have been defeated"
As it happens, I either forgot to disable, or had inadvertently *en*abled the "turn time limit" option while setting up the game, so once I hit that arbitrary year somewhere sin the early 2030's, the game just declared me the loser.
And that to me sucks so much worse than being pipped by an opponent who was just one step ahead. As annoying as that is, you could look back and think "well, they must have been working on it as hard as I had"... once your rage had subsided, of course. There would be a logical reason for why you lost. But being just told out of nowhere that "oops, no, you just straight lose now", for no adequately explained reason... that just feels awful.

I'm hungry for a MMORPG that is good and runs on my PC that is not World of Warcraft. Playing SWTOR and Rift, but they aren't exactly fun-performance-playing.

Too late. Peer pressure (from logging into Heroes of the Storm) and seeing my friends list caused me to succum to World of Warcraft. Hopefully the coincidental naming of a character after a good friend will stop me getting sucked into a black hole again.
Re: The Game Venting Thread
Started Spec Ops: The Line on FUBAR difficulty yesterday. it is FUBAR allright. the tutorial pretending to be the first mission wants me to go and shoot out a glass window to pour sand over enemy heads. the problem is that at this difficulty level a single headshot will leave you dead, and the enemy ALWAYS lands that headshot when i try to shoot out the window. and the game also keeps annoying me with "you died multiple times here do you want to lower the difficulty?"
No, i already finished the game on other dificulties, thats kinda the reason im playing on this difficulty you know.
eh 6 hours is nothing. I once lost a 30 hour one when 3 AI nations decided to team up and nuke me together.
Hah, my laptop will refuse to run anything from 2010 and on. Luckily i replaced my need to rely on it this spring.

Re: The Game Venting Thread
OK, so this is a weird thing to just randomly post here but...
I have never gotten the obsessive fanboy love over Gearbox Software.
I mean, this is a company who have been:
1. Up to their eyeballs in the Aliens: Colonial Marines debacle.
2. Responsible for releasing Duke Nukem Forever.
3. Basically crapped on a fan project because they were afraid it'd make them look bad.
4. And other than this, have basically one halfway decent franchise.
And yet these guys get insane amounts of love from the fandom! Their PAX panels are the biggest things of the show! I just do not get this.
Can anyone explain?

4. You're underestimating how much people love Borderlands.
Mostly, though, it's the more public faces of the company. Randy Pitchford, Anthony Burch, Mikey Neumann, all seem to be fairly likeable personalities.

Re: The Game Venting Thread
I was going to say that I don't get obsessive fanboy love for any game company. Then I remembered Bioware and Telltale.
But yea, the love for Borderlands is strong in a lot of people. I think that it is, at worst, halfway decent in terms of quality even if one doesn't personally care for it. I think it's good for what it is myself. And as Korvys mentioned, the fact they have some big and well-liked faces to the company helps a lot.
Also, for Duke Nukem Forever, that entire situation seemed to be bad for them as well from my understanding. From when they got it to when it was released. That said, they shouldn't have released it unless they were legally obligated to. There isn't much of an excuse for Colonial Marines either.
That said, I'm not a huge fan of Gearbox either.

Re: The Game Venting Thread
Can I just say that I am so sick and tired of ethereal cosmic menaces in video games? "Okay, so here's this world full of interesting characters with their own problems that you can help solve and feel like you're making a real impact on the world around you! Oh, wait, here's what you should REALLY be concerned about: a vast, unknowable evil that's come here to eat the world just because it can!"
I am so tired of Darkspawn and Reapers and dragons and Cthulhu. Give me REAL characters with REAL problems. A civil war between two families that disagree over the line of succession! A republican rebellion against a monarchy! Space pirates skirting the borders of Citadel space! What's wrong with that? Why does it always have to be vast, unknowable evil?

It's all over but the crying. And the taxes.

Because it's easy to write, and you're always sure that the choices made in the sidequests don't need to influence the primary narrative in any way.
That's just the cynic in me talking though, I completely agree. Bring on the small problems!
----
As for the Borderlands popularity, I think it is a combination of a decent game (I personally quite liked BL1) and the time at which it was released. Back in 2009 shooters were sad, brown husks striving for gritty realism.
Borderlands took a different route, and for that it was rewarded.
Did it do an excellent job? Hell no, but its success did send a sign to the industry that games can be fun as well and don't need to take themselves too seriously.
And that I applaud. (Also, I have a slight crush on the Burches, maybe)
Mara.

Dragon Age 2. Humans Vs Qunari. Mages Vs Templars.
True in the latter everyone effectively dies.

I'm working on something that will have the first two, at least, though it's got a long way to go.

I just played One Night At Freddy's. After playing it, I have to say... big props to Alex for making it through an hour of that game. I couldn't handle that game. I just couldn't. I beat the first night with quite a bit of power, but I still feel like I lost by playing at all. Doesn't help my 'friend' turned off the lights on me...

Re: The Game Venting Thread
After putting it down for almost three years, I decided to go back to Dragon Age 2 one last time before moving on to Inquisition. I am getting a bit more into the story this time around, but the combat is just killing it for me. I loved Origins' combat. It was tactical, complex, and let me do exactly what i wanted to. This just feels random, it's hard to tell what's going on and what is or isn't working well.
But the worst thing this game does, for my play style at least, is spawn enemies mid-combat, from random sides. If I'm playing a battlefield control mage, I want to be able to know that the hallway I just walked down is safe, not have ten bandits appear two feet behind me and start attacking. There is no way to make good use of positioning for a tactical advantage unless you save, play a fight, see where everyone appears, load, and then do it again. It's infuriating that almost every fight has waves of enemies just appearing in areas where there's no logical reason for them to show up.
Blahh.
I do like the characters, though.

My advice with DA2: Turn it on Easy and just do it for the story. The combat never gets better. I did it during the last few fights and I wish I had done it sooner.

Yeah, I think I might just do that. The tensest fights seem to get is "everyone else is dead so my mage character is running away and stopping to shoot a spell now and then."

ORAS. I was going to catch a Carvhana (baby sharkmon) and it was a 5% catch rate in zone A.
In zone A+1, it wasd a 35% chance (better odds).
I ran there and got abducted for a wierd side story.
I got to zone A+1, but I lost access to my surfing Pokemon, I can't get to a PC to withdraw the babysharkmon I eventually caught (5 casts).
-
My guild in WoW asked me what character I wanted to raid on.
I told them I didn't want to raid.
I want to raid, but my life wouldn't allow it anymore. It wouldn't be fun for me, even if the activity itself is fun to make. Outside things would make it unfun.

It's in the general forum "venting thread" - page 260. I don't know how to link directly to it, and don't want to be taking up twice as much forum space on it. Do read, yes?

Dear Wolfenstein, having AI allies that accidentally shoot you is poor game design. Sticking you in a long corridor with no good cover due to the ally rushing into the middle of the hall behind the best cover is worse.

Dear Blizzard. Building Heroes of the Storm with the Starcraft 2 engine that's poorly optimised for people with machines that are over 4 years old is bad design. As a company, you're not really known for alienating large population of players.
