Special Attack/Defense are basically any moves that aren't physical attacks. Fire blasts, psychic strikes, that kind of thing. You can tell if a move uses SA/D if it's a 'Special' move. I think it'll list that when you're looking at the move. 'Physical' moves use the normal Attack and Defense. 'Special' uses Special Attack And Defense. There's no overlap (that I know of), between them.

It's like 'melee' and 'ranged'.

To make it confusing, special and none special used to be blanket for types. i.e. Grass and elec were special. Normal and fight were non.

They changed it to make it more interesting. Now you can have an Alakazam (highest potential special attack of any none-legendary/Rotom Pokemon) who can learn Focus Blast (a Special Fighting attack) and deal good damage with it.
It lets Pokemon be more colourful with their attack type variety.

*(In RYB you had only Special, That dictated probability of status affects being applied)
-

Summery: Now, FireFANG is Attack. FireBLAST is Special. If the move is a projectile then it's SPECIAL.

The downside is now you need a near encyclopaedic knowledge of all the moves, what 'type' they are and if the Pokemon you're facing can use it.

And I often struggle with remembering what element(s) each Pokemon is I'm about to face.

Though since most attack types are associated with certain elements you can hedge your bets if your or the enemies Pokemon will be weak to it.

In other news, I found out today that I can't give the Nickname "Georgie" to a Pokemon, I presume because it has the word "Orgie" in it. : /
But surely is Orgie spelt with a y? (Orgy)

As I said, when you look at the move (which you can do by looking at the summary of the Pokémon I believe), it should say if it's Special or Physical. That makes it a bit easier at least.

It has an icon.

STARBURST is physical. CIRCLES is special.

Most Pokemon look like their types. There are a few exceptions which seem illogical (Flygon being a ground type, Gyrados being Flying etc). It does help a lot if you have followed the series, as you only had to learn each new wave.

I know it shows you for YOUR moves, but not the opponents moves.

So what I'm saying is that unless you can remember if your opponent's attack is either physical or special (which granted in most cases is obvious) then it can be hard to remember if you should be boosting SDEF or DEF if you need it.

Also MEGAKagaskhan actually looks pretty awesome:

Generally you only boost the defence if you're build a turtling Pokemon (a classic example is Steelix). I boost the area which the Pokemon excels at.

In the AI where you're going for the champion, just play the game as a 'sweeper'. Pump into raw attack and keep your speed above your enemy and just blast through it.

Won my first internet battle. I was using my "levelling up pokemon to evolve" team. I made my opponent rage quit. Which meant I won XD

Oh yeah! And his ability is really cool. He gets to do all of his attacks twice.

FYI, in the post game, you're going to want as many people on your friend list as possible.

I just hatched a shiny Fennekin. It seems like it's stats are a bit garbage, but I can't be sad because it's shiny.

Can you believe it only took me five minutes? I think I'm going to make five inute MS Paint artwork my thing. I'm super good at it.

I had no idea what that was until just now. And now that I've seen it/it's Pokedex entry, it fits so much. Especially the whole 'when one gets mad, it moves to another rock.'

Haven't seen any shinies.

I do have Pokerus. I guess I should be grateful.

Won a battle last night against someone who's hatched 64 eggs. I was using my 'Pokemon to evolve'.

I'd still like to try getting Pokerus from you, even though it's a bit less relevant with Super Training. And it helped that I had bred my fennekin with a foreign language Fennekin, which ups the chance of getting shiny children by 5x.

My friend code: 043083193387

And if anyone needs Fennekins, just add me and trade me when you see me online. I'm breeding a bunch of them anyways.

I would love a Fennekin. I have a Froakie I could trade.

I'd like a Froakie. Female if you have one. If not, then no big deal. Just shoot me a tradey thing.

As soon as it hatches.

Alright. And if it's not female, don't worry about it. I'm likely not going to be breeding it anyways.
