Laser, you're invite has been sent. To access, log into Minecraft and click on Realms. When the next screen pops up you'll see the title Minecraft realms at the top with a envelope to the side of it. Click on the envelope and your invitation should be there.

Actually, I don't know how MC servers work - I've never used one. How will I get the invite?

On normal servers, no, it's just whether you can join it or not.
On Realms servers, you should see a little flashing diamond on the "Minecraft Realms" button if you're able to join a Realms server. Also, when you click on "Minecraft Realms" you'll see a notification next to it. Click on the notification and you'll see the invite to the Realm.

Oh, I didn't realize it was a Realm server. Doesn't that cost money? Is there any way we can kick a couple of bucks to the host?

Well, all servers cost money in some fashion. And yes, though I've forgotten how.
