Are you sure?
You did get the right answer, whereas mine was a complete fluky guess.

Yeah, I can't be bothered finding a niche game in my collection and tending to the thread for a day or two. Too much work.

Nyope! It is not Populous.
Fun Fact: Populous: The Beginning was one of my favourite PS1 games.

Geoff is right!
Wait sorry...I've just heard in my ear that is in fact incorrect. Sorry. : (
The right answer was:
Celtic Tales - Balor of the Evil Eye
Which I believe The Lord Hosk, esquire, has gotten correct!

Re: Name that Game!
Do you have pictures of games from the late 80's and early 90's that appeared in discount bins and 10 game collections in the late 90s and early 2000's?
Is it a FPS? If not... I probably own it.

Re: Name that Game!
I was just about to say 'Star Control II'...when I read what you actually said in your post.
It doesn't look like the 'claymation' talking heads of SC3, so I'm gonna go with the BETTER sequel, The Ur-Quan Masters.

Also, let's test you - game from the era and I discovered in such a bundle:

Nope; too big a name (and X-Com has been isometric rather than proper top-down).

Its not a star trek rip off.. AT ALL in any way. the 12 races have formed a "federation" and you go "on away missions"

Re: Name that Game!
*nods respectfully* Bravo - not 100% certain you've got it, but you're really aiming in the right direction!
HINT: the storyline goes that there was recently an armistice to a big galactic war, and now the 'peaceful' races have all these unclaimed worlds out there (maybe abandoned due to the war, maybe never got around to exploring before shots were fired?) and you're hired to kit out and staff a ship and basically take part in a 'land rush' of claiming planets for your faction within the new federation.

Re: Name that Game!
Okay, here's more pics:
The last pic was the top-down view as you control your 'away team' as they explore and claim a planet.
Top-down space combat, in the real-time style of...a certain other oft-mentioned classic game on this thread.
A still from the revolutionary animated cut-scene you're rewarded with when you defeat an enemy ship. (no seriously, this sort of thing was new, and what won the unreleased game an award at CES in '93) ...pity marketing wouldn't let the devs ACTUALLY finish the game before it was released.

Re: Name that Game!
YEP! Command Adventures: STARSHIP fell prey to the 'get it out on launch date regardless of completion state' syndrome, and it was the first instance of that that I personally encountered - it seems the actual overarching STORY that would compel you to play more than maybe a half-hour never got implemented, so it's just a go out and fight random ships in a sector then land on and stake out random planets ad nauseam until your race 'wins the land grab'.
Pity, really - even just a case of the other races trying to claim worlds and a 'nemesis' gathering power behind the scenes to be a final boss would've made it a worthwhile game. And of course, since this was pre-internet, the game was NEVER getting patched - there used to be a v2.0 on the dev's BBS for dial-up download but that simply fixed bugs.
Of course the dev house doesn't exist anymore; ironic that it was a great cautionary tale...that no one listened to.
