Champions Online

Postby Dave-O_Boy » 12 Aug 2009, 19:50

So Champions online is coming out next month and I was wondering who else is thinking about getting it?

For those of you that don't know, Champions Online is a Super Hero MMO made by the same people that made City of Heroes/Villains. While similar in concept, they're apparently going to be quite different games.
Everything I heard makes it sound really spiffy and I'm stickler for complex character creation in games.

I watched the tutorial walkthrough over on GameTrailers...looks pretty neat.

Part 1: http://www.gametrailers.com/video/tutor ... line/54160

Part 2: http://www.gametrailers.com/video/tutor ... line/54161

Judging from what the guy says in those videos, the customization is nearly infinite...thats pretty damn cool, but I don't know if I'm ready for another MMO. I just broke up with WoW and I don't want to get hurt again.

*edit*
Also gotta love the Simpsons Reference:

The character customization is really what sells the game for me.

Here's a link to a rather interesting article of some of the more innovative aspects of the game.[LINK]

How awesome does that Nemesis system sound?
Totally awesome I know.

I kind of would have liked to see player villains but i can understand why they'd avoid that.

I've heard talk of there being "Anti-Heroes" and Villains in some future update.

Looks like the Open Beta has gone live for FilePlanet subscribers, and people that have pre-ordered.

If either of those two group definitions apply to anyone on these forums, they should give us a mini-review.

If the beta ever goes fully public, I'll totally be checking it out.

The game is good but I'm not sure i'd spring money for it. It's basically City of Heroes with a more traditional inventory system and an open ended character creation

I was in the closed beta, and I gotta say. It was really fun. Combat, the character creation, both of which were really cool. Not MGS "I must do this" fun but "Weeeeeee! He died. Look, another guy. Weeeeee!" kinda fun. I'm still hoping to see it on the 360 at some point in the near future. I don't play so many MMOs but a console MMO I'd be willing to try out.

I have some friends in the Open Beta, but sadly they have been having some difficulties with the patching, as seem to be the case for a lot of people when the beta first opened. I am hoping that it will be working very soon and I will get a chance to watch the game over their shoulder. I will report back when I have more details.

Yeah, there were/are a lot of people downloading the patch and it seemed to overload the servers a bit.
It seems to be working now, but still is going pretty slow.

It appears that they had some problems with the pre-loaded stuff not working quite right so they had to give out a second download or allow everyone's patcher to basically start with nothing.

Anyway, I have played a bit of this game now and I have to say that it has won me over to it's way of thinking. There isn't really a lot of difference here between this game other super-hero based MMOs currently on the market. There are a quite a few little tweaks to the way that things work that just seem to make so much sense.

I have a feeling that it won't be everyone's cup of tea, but it certainly seems to be doing a lot right and that is enough for me. I would recommend that if you are interested in playing a super-hero mmo then trying this one.

I been playing the beta all day. It's a lot of fun. Ranged attacks definitely have a massive advantage over melee though. I could pretty much one hit everything in the lower levels.

After a bit more experimentation I'll probably invest in the lifetime subscription. whooo.

Bump

Here's a screenie of my current character.

(I tend to play females.)

So yeah the beta is pretty fun. I think there are a bit too many over world missions that are often annoying since you have to kind of compete with other players that are doing them. But there is always the option to drop a mission. Which is nice.

I have a feeling this game is going to be horrendously unbalanced and there will be nothing anyone can do about it. It's the nature of this sort of character-creation style; somebody is going to be really underpowered, and somebody is going to be overpowered.

But I'll probably check it out as soon as there's a free 10-14 day trial or whatever for it.

This'll probably be the MMO I get into after I've finished school. Either that or Aion online, and Aion mainly just because I loved Guild Wars a lot. (Made by the same guys.)

I hear Aion is just a grind fest.

CO is probably a lot more like Guild Wars then Aion.

Well, that strengthens my opinion of CO over Aion. Hell, I didn't even hear about Aion until a bunch of my mates who used to play Guild Wars with me ran up and went "Oh, you hear about Aion!?!?!?"

Well, like in Guild Wars, Every zone is intanced in CO. Their combat is somewhat similar too. I mean they're very different games altogether, but from what I hear Aion isn't all that great.

CO is better than Aion. Aion is good if you are Korean, and liked FFXI, and have no friends and love grinding all day, every day. CO is great if you like a) RP b) Action c) Super heroes d) violence to minorities e) visiting Canada as a level f) Punching people off of building and seeing the horrendous damage they take when they hit the ground or g) all of the above.
