TapTapConcede Ep01 (2013-01-18)
Re: TapTapConcede Ep01 (2013-01-18)
Oooh, that Pardic Firecat may have to make its way into my deck when I finally get around to making my first ever deck (It'll pretty much be dragon + burn but I should probably include some cheaper creatures too)

Re: TapTapConcede Ep01 (2013-01-18)
I played Magic during Odyssey, so Pardic Firecat was the only card I recognized from Graham's list.
So it amused me a little when that was the exact card James guessed was made up.

Funnily enough, the only card I knew was real was the wolverine, which Paul and Kathleen guessed was the fake. I've never played with it, but I read over the list of creature types and thought that seemed like an unusual one. There are actually six wolverine cards.

I tried that same test later on Alex and Cam, and they both called the Woodfink as the fake almost immediately. They knows they Magics.

I wonder what the Baneful Woodfink card would actually be tho?
3BB 0/1 Treefolk, When any other creature dies, you may reveal the top card of your library. If you do, each opponent loses life equal to that card's converted mana cost.

There is a reason that the cards in the booster was so bad Prophecy is often regarded as one of the worst expansions, probably second behind Homelands.

Is there going to be a separate thread to post deck lists in if we'd like to request a name, or should I just post it in here?
Because I enjoy my decks having ridiculous names far more than I should. For example, I call my Red/Black vampire deck "Drakdos" because I'm a ridiculous geek.

Re: TapTapConcede Ep01 (2013-01-18)
I really want to give LRR a pack of Homelands to crack on the podcast now. Maybe add a pack of Fallen Empires just so there are enough cards to talk about. And ridicule.

Re: TapTapConcede Ep01 (2013-01-18)
I think the trick with the Woodfink is it's a threshold thing. If you know a bunch of Magic, you know Kitchen Finks. So you think "well surely they can't be the ONLY "fink" creature. But if you know a LOT of Magic, know EXACTLY that they are the only "fink"
Look at the cards. LOOK AT THE CARDS!

Re: TapTapConcede Ep01 (2013-01-18)
You know, thinking more about the whole Urga bit of the cast, that could tie into a segment that happens again. Make a card based on something not dealing with Magic. Either making fun of a card, or just trying to make a joke card. Maybe something like:
Jonny - 2RR
Legendary Creature - Human Partier
Haste
(T): Put A Beer counter on Jonny
(T), Remove three A Beer counters from Jonny: When Jonny untaps, creatures your opponents control cannot block this turn and Jonny cannot attack until next turn.
3/3
The logic: Jonny arrives to the 'party' (which he doesn't realize is actually a battle), gets drunk, and blacks out. When he wakes up, he starts telling the opponents creatures the story of how he ended up there and what'd happened (in his mind), getting their attention to stop them from blocking.

Re: TapTapConcede Ep01 (2013-01-18)
So there were some things I noticed as being incorrect, and I'd like to help rectify some of that:
Judge's Familiar is not strictly better than Drake Hatchling, as Judge's Familiar only Force Spikes instants and sorceries, whereas Drake Hatchling is just sacrificed for a Force Spike.
Keldon Berserker's ability triggers when it attacks no matter what, then checks for untapped lands when it resolves. This means you can tap during the Declare Attackers step before the trigger resolves to (for example) throw out a Shock in additionto Berserker getting big.
Additionally, I have a bunch of Unhinged packs just sitting around, so if you want one to open, let me know.

We will gladly accept all donated old/odd packs! Send me an email for the address.
Also, definitely YES for theorizing what Baneful Woodfink actually is.
We'll read the best ones out next episode.

Re: TapTapConcede Ep01 (2013-01-18)
I have deck for you to name, it's a izzet guild deck that uses what I call Indirect burn. it uses creatures like lobber crew to deal damage and only has 3 burn spells. Though that is what it is designed to do it's so flexible I've won at least 6 different ways without changing any cards. It can win via indirect burn, goby token swarm(using krenko), by big monsters, ect. It is composed of goblins and wizards obviously
Also I'm not sure how to do it but I want to make a Simic, Izzet, and dimir combined deck.

And here's my attempt, complete with a Prophecy-esque mana payment weirdness mechanic.
Baneful Woodfink 1BG
Creature — Elf Informant (1/3)
→ Look at target opponent's hand. That opponent may then pay 1, if they do, sacrifice Baneful Woodfink.
"It's dangerous work, but the pay is excellent."
Edit: Slight rewording so you can't just cast Indestructibility on it. Edit again: Reformatted the wording so it's more like Gatherer.

Re: TapTapConcede Ep01 (2013-01-18)
Hmmm... I'm thinking something like this:
Baneful Woodfink - UG
Creature - Human Rouge - U
Deathtouch
When Baneful Woodfink deals combat damage to a player, look at that player's hand.
1/2
"Be careful around the woodfinks. A simple handshake will reveal your deepest secrets."
-Aurelia
(editing in flavor text)
EDIT: Also, there's something I just remembered when remembering the whole talk on the flavor of some of the Gatecrash cards. One of the biggest flavor-fails of RTR to me was from Vraska. The 1/1 tokens she produces don't have deathtouch. That seems really odd to me given they basically have player-deathtouch.

Here's my duel deck, not got a name yet, haven't been able to think of a good one,
16 Instants
4 Murder
4 Silent Departure
2 Into the Roil
4 Cyclonic Rift
2 Ultimate Price
20 Creatures
4 Vampire Nighthawk
4 Mist Raven
4 Thrill Kill Assassins
3 Typhoid Rats
3 Harbor Bandits
2 Havengul Lichs
1 Xathrid Gorgon
1 Deadeye Navigator
2 Artifacts
2 Wolfhunter's Quivers
22 Land
4 Drowned Catacombs
10 Swamp
8 Island
Deck wins either by tempoing the opposition out or by having some cheap deathtouch guys to trade up to the long game which is blinking mist ravens with the navigator, turning stuff to stone with the gorgon and using the wolfhunter's quiver and my deathtouch to ping stuff to death and using the lich to re-animate all the stuff I use to trade.
Also for the Baneful Woodfinks,
Creature - Ouphe, 2 Colorless,2B/U
(2/2) Deathtouch Persist
Woodcutters in Shadowmoor soon learnt to avoid certain parts of the forest...

I was quite impressed with myself for getting it right also. I knew every card that you named which was real, so it was easy to spot which was not.
I haven't really played much in the last few years but still try to keep up. Started playing around when Odyssey came out, but got some older cards at the time and as I said on twitter, I used to get to know older cards by looking for cheaper not as good variants of cards that I could afford on my tiny budget.
I used to go through the full spoiler list that Inquest gamer used to have every now and again, so at some point I have read every card text for every card pre-Time Spiral. Which is all kinds of sad.

Baneful Woodfinks Creature — Ouphe 2/2, 2{G/B}{G/B} (4)
Wither (This creature deals damage to creatures in the form of -1/-1 counters.)
Persist (When this creature dies, if it had no -1/-1 counters on it, return it to the battlefield under its owner's control with a -1/-1 counter on it.)
Sacrifice a Forest: Move a -1/-1 counter from Baneful Woodfinks to target creature.
The Ouphe are eager to help... but who are they really helping?
--------------------------------------------
And since we appear to be using this thread for "name my deck" purposes.
Here's my deck. It's mostly Orzhov with a red splash. It's a creature light, removal heavy control and bleed deck. The idea is to hit the opponent's board hard with removal while using Extort triggers to whittle down their health and restore your own. Ideally opponent either gets finished by a burn spell or one of the "inevitability" top end cards.
The sideboard is designed to combat specific popular archetypes in Standard.
Creatures:
Thrull Parasite x3
Syndic of Tithes x3
Rhox Faithmender x3
Removal:
Tribute to Hunger x4
Murder x3
Ultimate Price x 4
Brimstone Volley x 2
Oblivion Ring x3
Utility:
Sign in Blood x3
Boros Charm x3
Blind Obedience x 3
Top end:
Charmbreaker Devils
Sorin, Lord of Innistrad
Olivia Voldarin
Bloodline Keeper
Board:
Slaughter Games x2
Nevermore x3
Rest in Peace x3
Sever the Bloodline x2
Elixir of Immortality x3
Glaring Spotlight x2

It was sooooo cute watching you guys discover the horror that was Prophecy. You guys seemed to like Flame Burst, look up Accumulated Knowledge , its the blue one , guess what it does.
I was hoping you guys would pop a Rhystic Studym the only decent "rhystic" card in the block. =)
