My 2 cents on 2 of the cards I've actually brewed and played with:

Tamiyos journal: Build around the journal and Briarbridge Patrol - you can use the Journal to tutor for any creature on your opponents 2nd Main Phase and get it into play in their end step for free. Add Tireless Trackers for additional clues and a couple of 1ofs you can search for.

So maybe something like this:
4 Tamiyo's Journal
4 Briarbridge Patrol
4 Tireless Tracker
1 Bane of Bala Ged
1 Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger
4 Erdwal Illuminator
2 Ongoing Investigation
4 Second Harvest
2 Ulvenwald Mysteries
4 Yavimaya Coast
4 Lumbering Falls
1 Alhammarret's Archive
4 Artificer's Epiphany
2 Magnifying Glass
3 Negate
4 Evolving Wilds
7 Forest
5 Island

Assault Formation: Don't play defenders. I took an AF deck to a 10th place at a PPTQ pre-rotation. You want cheap creatures with high toughness that aren't defenders and preferably be 2 colors. The best option there IMO is going UG. Post rotation I ended up on this list, but it doesn't work that well in the current Standard meta:
4 Assault Formation
4 Tide Drifter
4 Benthic Infiltrator
4 Sidisi's Faithful
4 Lumbering Falls
4 Dispel
4 Sigiled Starfish
10 Island
6 Forest
4 Yavimaya Coast
4 Qarsi Deceiver
4 Void Grafter
4 Vessel of Nascency

//Sideboard
SB: 1 Evolutionary Leap
SB: 4 Negate
SB: 4 Shape the Sands
SB: 4 Windstorm

One of the coolest things I found with the old version was that Sigiled Starfish was better than Jace in pretty much every situation.

Dang it, I keep forgetting to see these.
While I probably would have liked to have seen more silly decks, in a tribal deck battle, had I remembered to watch.
I just can't reproach someone for wanting to play around with Hangarback Walker, it's just such a cool and fun card.
Good luck with your Brain in a Jar deck guys, I really hope I remember to tune in to watch.

And I find out you ended up with Brain in the Jar. Hmm, how about this:

4 Duress
4 Asylum Visitor
4 Mind Rot
4 Ruinous Path
4 Languish
4 Grasp of Darkness
4 Nightsnare
4 Transgress the Mind
20 Swamp
4 Brain in a Jar
2 Pick the Brain
2 Necromantic Summons

Similar to your Hardy Boys deck idea, I've wanted to make a Law & Order/CSI deck ever since Murder Investigation was first printed.

I don't know if it's in the "intent" of the CSL, but Sorin, Grim Nemesis's +1 works great with Brain in the jar. Get Brain on the board with a few counters. Scry X and put the most expensive spell on top. Sorin +1, deal damage to opponent for the cards CMC.
