The luck gods have smiled down on me this weekend. Pulled Voice of Resurgence in a draft twice in a row.
Also, congrats Duckay!

Re: The General Magic: The Gathering Thread
Man, loss win win in a DGM swiss today. Felt good about my deck but man I felt awesome about beating my round 2 opponent considering he went Lotleth Troll into Varolz the Scar-Striped on T2 and t3 game 1 AND game 2, and still dropped Varolz on T3 in game three -_-

Re: The General Magic: The Gathering Thread
I went to another paper RTR-block draft yesterday. We did it in the order opposite of what you're supposed to (we went RTR-GTC-DGM, and I honestly felt it worked better).
Pack 1 had Chaos Imps and a foil Ash Zealot. I took the Zealot (because duh) and figured "Well, I'm going red." Got passed a Loxodon Smiter and decided to try going Naya. Ended up getting the white Primordial, Firemane Avenger, Angelic Skirmisher, Wrecking Ogre (who won me one game with bloodrushing), got passed a Progenitor Mimic, and opened yet another foil Emmara. It's weird because that's the second foil of her I opened, and it was at the same place.
I ended up going 4-0, winning my fourth straight draft at that place. I AM THE MASTER OF DRAFTING! Either that, or they're not that good.

The competition at my LGS is so hard that I've pretty much given up on going to FNM -_-

Quitting is exactly what they want you to do! Don't give them the satisfaction. Make them work for their victory!
On an unrelated note. I'm going to be doing a Modern Masters draft with some friends in a couple of weeks. Are any of you excited for it/are going to be drafting the set? If so, which reprints have you most excited?

Re: The General Magic: The Gathering Thread
I'm thinking I'm going to a Modern Masters draft at my LGS. It's a bit expensive, but there are so many money cards and it's unlikely I'll get another chance to. Does anyone have any idea what the rough prices for cards will be?
I am excited for Doubling Season. I'd love to pull one. It's the only card in the set I'd hold onto I think for Commander.

Yeah! get into the shop early, buy a few cards from the case and get back in there!
Or switch to limited

Buying "a few" cards from the case will by no means get me anywhere in Standard at this shop. 400$+ decks seem to be the norm. There are of course plenty of people playing average run of the mill decks but invariably I run into one of these crazy ass decks and get annihilated.
I do play limited but I actually seem to do worse at that despite having a good record on MTGO. Seems like there are some really serious drafters there too -_-

Re: The General Magic: The Gathering Thread
I don't honestly know if this will be helpful, but price isn't necessarily an indicator of power. The mainboard of the deck I ran on Saturday is priced at under $50 (Boros Reckoner in the sideboard brings up the total price, I grant you).
A lot of it is about knowing the meta at the place you play and how to work with that.

Re: The General Magic: The Gathering Thread
Plus, even without the actual 'power cards', basic things like shocklands jack of the price of a deck. I likely have $120 worth of shocks alone in my Naya deck. But I know what you mean. I get so sick of playing against the guys with 4 snaps, 4 sphinxes, 4 supreme verdicts, etc. And my local game store is pretty much the same. When I see someone play 4 Voices, I die a little inside.

Re: The General Magic: The Gathering Thread
Yea. I can recall just after Gatecrash came out I got paired with a guy running some kind of pure creature Naya deck with a playset each of Thundermaw Hellkite, Aurelia, Thragtusk, Smiter, Reckoner, Frontline, etc etc etc
Yea... it's like that.
I know card quality only goes so far but let's face it, cards are expensive because they're good. Eventually you hit the Esper control deck full of Sphinx's, Verdict, Snapcaster, etc
It's basically like walking into the shop and I can be sure the top 8 from the last standard event at a big tournament are in the room.

Yea. The problems are that I desperately LOVE deckbuilding so I really WANT to play standard... and also that all the Draft players there seem to be really god damned good o_O I have yet to be in prizes at an FNM draft despite regularly doing so on MTGO

Have you looked around for other stores? I'm sure there must be a decent number within a reasonable distance of Burnaby.

Honestly, if it was an option for me, I wouldn't. The closest place that does draft every week is 2 hours a week. I can't do that drive every week. The rest of the places near me do draft maybe once a month. So... yea.

Prolly but I don't drive, so the prospect of going to another is rather inconvenient considering I can walk to the current one. You might be right tho, it might be worth at least checking out... Hmm I think there's one in New West near the skytrain station

Re: The General Magic: The Gathering Thread
Utilitarian you can go to stronghold, but I haven't been there since shortly after the pre-release and I think they were about to start moving. The city didn't allow them to hold the event there cause there was going to be to many people, so we played in a hotel. After that the back room with all the tables was empty and FNM's were being held at a near by Mcdonalds.....

Re: The General Magic: The Gathering Thread
I've become quite used to people playing control decks, so a lot of decks I run personally skew very anti-control... I've versed (and soundly beaten) those Verdict/Snapcaster/Sphinx's Rev decks you're talking about.
They are expensive because they're good (and therefore highly sought after), but there are less expensive decks that match up well against that style. That was my whole point.
