Re: The General Magic: The Gathering Thread
I don't know; as I've said before, I build my standard decks out of trades and things I've pulled from drafts/prizes. I think the last time I paid money for a card was over a year ago when I bought a couple of Goblin Guides for $5. Of course, then you have to consider the amount of money I spent on tournaments, on drafting, and so forth.
I have a big enough collection that I almost certainly could sell off a lot of cards and afford to pay that back into tournaments/drafts/etc. I haven't, though, because I'm hanging onto those cards for reasons completely unknown to me.

Re: The General Magic: The Gathering Thread
While I don't mean to gloat over those less fortunate, I have been noticing how much more fun this game is, now that I have the financial freedom to play how I want. Last time I played I was a poor student, and now I have a full time job.
While I much prefer to trade for cards, that I can just buy them does make my life easier.

Well, that's...lovely for you, korvys. Just peachy.

Thanks!
But really, I do understand. I used to be in the same boat. It's actually part of the reason I started judging. It meant I got to be involved, without it costing me money, and I was usually paid in either product or entry to events.

Re: The General Magic: The Gathering Thread
Money's never been my issue. Granted, I like drafts, but I enjoy silly Constructed formats a lot, like Rainbow Stairwell, Kaleidoscope, Vanguard, Chaos, stuff like that. My biggest issue is that there's no real card shop anywhere near here, and all of my Magic playing friends are at least an hour away, if not farther.

Which is a better plane to spend Halloween on: Grixis or Innastrad?

Neither. I doubt either plane is friendly towards trick-or-treaters.

Grixis is NOT the shard for trick-or-treating.
I bet Bant is pretty high-class though.

Innistrad isn't much better. The candy's likely poisoned, you have a 1 in 1.000000001 chance of running into an actual vampire, and nobody will think you're dressed up due to everyone wearing stupid outfits.

Re: The General Magic: The Gathering Thread
Bant would have that ridiculous costume themed party where they spend megabucks on their costumes and no matter what you throw together, one of them has done it 'better' and spent way more on it.

In Bant the person who wears the most sigils wins the costume contest.

It's better than Esper. They just kill all the other contestants and gain a bunch of life because they're all ASSHOLES.

Jund and Naya wouldn't even have parties. They'd just have giant creatures that think you're the treat.

I actually think Naya would have a party. They actually seem like the most communal of all the shards.

Re: The General Magic: The Gathering Thread
I always thought that Naya was the closest to being a "nice" shard. A friendly shard. Opposite of this would probably be Grixis.

What about Ravnica? You know Rakdos knows how to party.

Re: The General Magic: The Gathering Thread
I actually mentioned Ravnica in my first post on the matter. But if you're going to a Halloween party, the Orzhov are the way to go. Creepy creatures (thralls) and ghosts acting as guests and labor. Selesnya seems like it'd have a more upper-class party, maybe a masquerade-type event, mostly since they're the 'we're all one' mentality. Rakdos would have the most insane, and deadly, party. Simic seems the most natural party, though the 'costumes' might be surprisingly lifelike. Izzet... might, but it'd end in an explosion or have candy with weird effects. Not sure what other guilds would have parties though... Gruul isn't into organized events. Dimir is too scattered to gather like that. Azorious and Boros would be too high-strung for a party. Maybe Golgari, but they seem like they live Halloween.

Speaking as an agent of House Dimir-er, speaking as an agent of the Undercity Couriers, we're too...busy...to have a Halloween party.

Re: The General Magic: The Gathering Thread
So I think I made out like quite a bandit with the 2013 Commander stuff today. My LGS of choice got less than they were hoping to shipment wise and they weren't even going to be able to fill their orders but the owner told me one of the other LGS in town had tons. I hated not giving them the sale on it so I picked up a Commander deck box and some sleeves. I then booked it over to the other LGS and they had a crazy awesome deal with a 5 for $119.99 so I basically got one of the decks for free (it was $29.99 for one).
Totally got there value wise.

Psst, Dix. Scale down your image size. It's colossal.
3/0/1 in tonight's FNM with my Simic Slaw deck. Tie was in the first match from time and I felt like I could have won if we'd had the time to play it out.
Beat mono-blue, and then Mono-Black and Dimir controls (woo!).
Was in prizes but at the bottom of the pile thanks to tiebreakers. Still happy.

What's in the Simic Slaw, Utilitarian?
...no, seriously, I'd like to know what's in your deck.

Re: The General Magic: The Gathering Thread
... Lots of things. ^_^
In all seriousness, this is what I'm calling the Mk IV version of the deck. It's gone through a lot of iterations, this one has the least blue in it of them so far. It's supposed to have one more Master Biomancer and one less something else but I haven't been able to trade for one yet.
4 Breeding Pool
12 Forest
2 Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx
4 Temple of Mystery
2 Island
2 Prime Speaker Zegana
4 Nylea, God of the Hunt
4 Elvish Mystic
4 Burning-Tree Emissary
2 Sylvan Caryatid
2 Polukranos, World Eater
3 Boon Satyr
1 Master Biomancer
4 Experiment One
4 Reverent Hunter
3 Karametra's Acolyte
3 Cyclonic Rift
SB: 4 Mistcutter Hydra
SB: 2 Pithing Needle
SB: 1 AEtherling
SB: 1 Scavenging Ooze
SB: 2 Nylea's Disciple
SB: 1 Ratchet Bomb
SB: 2 Rapid Hybridization
SB: 1 Fade into Antiquity
SB: 1 Arbor Colossus

Huh. I must admit, that's not what I think of when I picture a Simic deck, but it certainly looks fun.
