Re: The General Magic: The Gathering Thread
I was thinking about 5+ years. As I said, I don't have enough people to draft with on any given day, so it does me no good to even look at this set, unless I buy a box for possible appreciation. So, I may just end up skipping it entirely and using the money on other things...like Planechase planes or Archenemy schemes.

Re: The General Magic: The Gathering Thread
Also Modern Masters wasn't nearly as limited a print run as Wizards led people to believe, they did a second print run of it and almost all store and several of the distributors still have unopened cases.
In the Grand Rapids area(8 stores) there were at least 12 unopened boxes as of a month ago and one store said they could still get them from one of their distributors.
I was given a box as a birthday present last year and dont play modern or constructed for that matter. So I was looking to sell it but I dont want to get $140 bucks which is about what they offered cause thats what they can get them for or what they did get them for.

I wouldn't mind getting a box of Modern Masters. I could use that for fun draft, then Cube it up. Problem is, I don't theoretically wanna spend $400 on a Cube when I could easily make a Pauper one with the box of 5,000 commons I'm sitting on.

I'm definitely gonna try and build a Commander deck around that Marchesa chick.

Re: The General Magic: The Gathering Thread
Oh, without question. There's so many possibilities with her. While every creature gets Dethrone that attacks, we talked about Undying being the main mechanic that works best with her. Also, anything Monstrous, Tribute, Evolve, Graft, Anthroplasm, Mindwarper, Spike Cannibal, Savage Firecat, Spitting Hydra. A lot works with her.
Though universally, we all think that Mikaeus, the Unhallowed and Unspeakable Symbol - and possibly Necropotence - will be the key cards with her.
She's almost worth it to get a box...but I can probably just get her off of Card Kingdom.

I am going to cube the SHIT out of conspiracy. It's going to be the most carefully considered and constructed cube I have ever designed, and I am going to draft it at every opportunity. It's a beautiful set. Just absolutely wonderful.
When the upkeep takes longer than the main phase, I know I've done my job well.

I'm certainly going to toss a few conspiracy cards in my cube.
Re: The General Magic: The Gathering Thread
I'm looking forward to opening the packs to make cool (not necessarily good, but cool) legacy and commander decks, and I'll give the conspiracies and clockwork cards to my friends that have cubes.

Re: The General Magic: The Gathering Thread
Mark Rosewater said that there would be two things that fans had really been asking for in the set. One that's never been done before and one that hasn't been done in a long time.
A three-color walker seems to fit nicely into that second category. The only other one is Bolas and that was a long time ago.

It's all over but the crying. And the taxes.

Re: The General Magic: The Gathering Thread
Some folks are speculating that the "one people have been asking for that hasn't been done in a long time" might be the friendly coloured fetch lands. Modern players have wanted them for a long time since they only have access to the enemy coloured lands.
I think it might make sense, given that it would actually be a fairly low powered dual land in a standard block with Theros since you'd only be able to fetch basics with them, and that would severely limit your ability to stack your deck up with Temples

One: Mark Rosewater sounds really odd and kind of insane. I like him.
Two: ...bleh. It is going to be Kahns of Tarkir. That just kind of sounds super boring to me. Doesn't help that I'm not really a fan of Sarkhan Vol. It just sounds too much like "Game of Thrones: The Block" to me I guess. They even have the same 'the dragons are all dead, but they're coming back maybe?'
Three: I noticed the... person thing in the front of the image (with the white and black face) looks kind of like a badger. Charging Badger PW plox.

Re: The General Magic: The Gathering Thread
So I tried looking for blue, black, and/or red creatures that entered the battlefield with +1/+1 counters or had ways to get those counters pretty easily after showing up, all for the sake of a Marchesa EDH deck. I found over a hundred creatures.
This list does not include Sunbound, since trying to bring a creature with it back from the graveyard will probably end in sadness, or anything with Kicker, because like Sunbound I have no way to get those counters if they're returning from the graveyard. I was thinking of Heroic, but that felt clunky. There might be more out there, but this was what I found from a simple "enters the battlefield +1/+1 counter" search on Gatherer.
The collapsed list is organized by any notable abilities and such if any to help categorize the cards.
Anything with a question mark indicates my skepticism about its possible inclusion in a deck.
Any thoughts on some of these cards, or suggestions that I didn't find?
EDIT: I noticed I missed Allies in my first search attempt. There were only five of them though, but I added them anyway. Some other cards I didn't find the first time were also added. I also remembered Amplify was a thing, but I don't think it would be very useful in such a varied creature-type deck.

Re: The General Magic: The Gathering Thread
I'm not 100% sure about how i'm going to build Marchesa, I get the feeling that this is a deck that you can throw too many mechanics at and they just won't synergise at all. For eg: Bloodthirst sounds good in principle until you realise that they are not likely to come back with those +1/+1 counters, wheras Modular seems sweet to me

Re: The General Magic: The Gathering Thread
Being the aggressive player I am, I didn't think much past "all these creatures are just gonna flunge at anyone, not necessarily the one with the most life, because if any die they'll just come back again" while attacking the higher life total is pouring more gravy into a bowl of gravy. Bloodthirst doesn't seem too much of a problem to kick off since they'll come back in the same turn (maybe, depends on how many shenanigans happen involving a board wipe during the end step and what happens afterward) so as long as someone else gets hurt during any turn they're coming back I can see a counter.
I'm willing to stick with Tribute, Undying, and Unleash for massive beatdowns, and perhaps some of the sillier abilities like Devour or any of the Morningtide cards I have listed under "Other" that play around with counters to do weird things. Otherwise I'm turning cards sideways.

Re: The General Magic: The Gathering Thread
I'm probably going to take a different route, something along the lines of Grixis Shirei, using Modular, Undying and some other stuff to generate value. Not that I don't like flunging mind you!

Re: The General Magic: The Gathering Thread
I think what I would do would be Grixis with Undying and a couple other things, but something where I can use those +1/+1 counters to mess with the board, like:
Deathbringer Thoctar
Festercreep
Floodchaser
Mindwarper
Molten Hydra
Novijen Sages
Simic Manipulator
Spitting Hydra
Stingmoggie
"Take"
and finally, the linchpin: Ion Storm. Of course, sac methods could also be used, so they come back with counters reset, like Attrition, Tooth and Claw, or the obvious: Goblin Bombardment.

I can imagine playing something like Oracle of Bones and sacrificing it over and over again until someone finally decides not to give me the counters.
"Alright, either you guys let me cast whatever spell I want or I get to [insert sac outlet's effect] every time I hear someone say 'no'."

I can see a sac outlet really being huge in this deck. I mean, yeah, combat is combat, but some way to disrupt the board could really help out.

So, I'm assuming Conspiracy hasn't been fully spoiled yet? Because it seems very light on the red currently.
Also, from what I see so far, every card that doesn't deal with a new mechanic is a reprint?

Nope. Dack Faden and Brago at the very least are new and have no new mechanics.
But the set is only 210 cards, and only 65 of those aren't reprints. So there's not a huge amount of room. The vast majority are going to have the new mechanics, I would say.
