Sorry to change the subject, but I'm curious about something. How would adding a fourth pack effect a draft do you guys think?

With no other changes?
A bit more bomb driven, like sealed, as you have 4 1st picks. With 56 cards to find 23 playables, you can stay open longer (probably a good idea to be able to get those bombs). Sending signals in pack 1 will be more important, since you'll be getting 2 packs from that direction, but maybe not that much more important, due to the openness mentioned. Niche strategies will probably be stronger, with more chance to pick up specific cards (Mind Sculpt anyone?).
With so many options, the power level should rise a bit. Why play that mediocre card when you can just get more of that good one?
That said, I really don't think that will happen.

I don't think it'll ever happen officially. But I was asking because I thought it'd be interesting to try for fun.

Re: The General Magic: The Gathering Thread
Oh yeah. I don't think it would be that far off the current draft. If you want to get weird, 4-pack sealed (30 card decks) or 4-player draft (like the new-player drafs) are super weird.

Re: The General Magic: The Gathering Thread
My main worry about 4-pack sealed is just not having support. I'd rather go increased power-level than lower. In fact, I kind of want to try a fat-pack war like I've heard of some places doing. I just can't afford to buy-in at a fat-pack level.
That said, I've been in a new-player draft. It is pretty weird. I've also been in a 3-person draft. It was both awesome due to getting so many good cards, and it sucked due to... well, only having three people.

Fat Pack sealed is fun. My LGS at the time did that for the Theros release weekend, and I built a crazy UG deck with 3 Horizon Chimeras and 2 Bow of Nyleas that I opened. I managed to win that event .

Re: The General Magic: The Gathering Thread
I've done 4-booster drafts on occasion... notably double-GTC double-RTR, both before DGM came out, and after everyone was sick of it and wanted to experiment with stuff...
And yeah everything korvys says is pretty accurate... with a larger card pool, your deck is a lot stronger than it would otherwise be, and you have a lot more options in deckbuilding. In particular you have a much larger sideboard than you would normally expect for draft, and can dedicate more and higher picks to situational cards for sideboarding, or speculative picks on a colour possibly being open later than you would normally.

Re: The General Magic: The Gathering Thread
Conspiracy introduces a fourth pack on occasion with the Lore Seeker (just thinking about that card makes me smile). I don't think it's necessarily a good indicator of what adding an extra pack would do but...you have more tools, and therefore more options.
I think the interesting challenge would be to figure out how many packs you would need to draft to make a viable 60-card deck...

I feel like 6 packs (so the same number as sealed) would be enough. But I'd only want to do that with a set like RTR, with two large set and a small set to tie it together. I think 4 packs would be stretching it, and 5 might work. But I feel like 6 would give you the best power level for a 60 card deck.

Re: The General Magic: The Gathering Thread
My all-time chase card is a Judge Promo. I'll never get it, it's exceedingly rare, and it's $400, but I would forsake any and every Dual Land, and even Power Nine to get it.

Yeah I would scoop to that immediately and then run out of the room and probably the building.

Re: The General Magic: The Gathering Thread
I realize that Paul didn't actually finish his explanation in the stinger at the end of Friday Nights, but it does seem like LRR to actually develop a three-man draft format and just drop it as a joke in a stinger. Do you guys think what we know could actually work?
It's all over but the crying. And the taxes.

Hey, if this community could come up with actual rules to Viking Secret Wildcard Poker, it can come up with a new way to draft Magic.

So would I. It is my dream card. As I said, I would forsake Duals and even Power Nine for that. It's a Judge Promo, so it's very limited, and I've only seen one for sale out there. Supposedly, SCG has them for $400, but they're out of stock. EBay has one, but for $500, and if I had the coin to spare, I'd snatch it up in a heartbeat.

Re: The General Magic: The Gathering Thread
Well, I just had a pretty fun evening. So, a new store opened in town a few months back, mostly focused on used games, comics, and toys, but they also sell Magic at a much more reasonable rate than the other store in town (3 boosters for $10 rather than $5 each) as well as actually dealing in singles. They've clearly been trying to expand their customer base, so this week they've had a big sale that included 50% off all singles, and capped it off with a free tournament today.
The format was sealed-ish. Everyone randomly grabbed an intro deck and was allowed to put cards from the boosters it came with into it. I got M14, which was kind of disappointing at first, but it was blue/white fliers control, so I figured it'd be okay. What I forgot was that that was kind of a big deal in M14, so while everyone I played against had some form of Theros block deck, I was just flying over them and using copious removal and counters to keep them in check.
Ended up going 1-2, 2-0, 2-0. The first game could have been 2-0, but I made a stupid misplay (putting Illusionary Armour on my big guy rather than spreading the power around), and I got mana screwed game three. But I still ended up in a tie for third, and after I won the first tie-breaker game, my opponent conceded because it was getting late. So I ended up getting third out of eighteen, winning $10 store credit as a prize, which I was able to spend on $20 of singles due to the sale. Picked up some rares that I've wanted for a while but could never justify the price for, so that was neat.
Probably doesn't sound like a huge deal, but the last (and only) time I've gone to an actual event of any sort to play Magic was the RTR prerelease and it was overall a kind of negative experience, so I'm really happy to have this new store that surpasses the old one in almost every way. The fact that I'm even considering that I might go back to another event (even one that wasn't free) is pretty big for me. 'Course, nearly going undefeated may have contributed to that.

So my LGS does a rare redraft and puts a booster in the prize pool for each player instead of giving packs based on place. Is this form of prize giving worth doing wacky drafts in? I like the idea of doing stupid things in draft.

I haven't been able to catch up on recent MTG streams, did LRR mention when their spoiler card goes up?

Re: The General Magic: The Gathering Thread
I now have a pack of Revised, Future Sight, and Unhinged (for Lore Seeker fun), as well as 3 boxes of Conspiracy tucked away for Conspiracy fun in the future when it becomes hard to find. If I ever make it out to Seattle when LRR is around, I may bring a box or two to hold a LRR Conspiracy draft or two.

I've got a draft set of Conspiracy myself, but no one to play it with.

Moved to Tacoma, Wa.
Local game store tried to charge me $1.25 for an Elvish Mystic.
$1.25.
What in the actual hell? Hey. Let's go to Card Kingdom's site real quick.
$0.50. Okay.
Then I saw an Elspeth Knight-Errant.
$80.
That card is $20 at MOST.
I looked at the owner like she had two heads.
Fuck Tacoma.
