The General Magic: The Gathering Thread

Postby Elaro » 15 Sep 2010, 21:48

Thread here in G&G, I mean.

So... Magic! Now that the Crew has been reintroduced to this most excellent game, let's talk about it! And organize games, and post custom Magic cards... (made with the Magic Set Editor, available now!)

So yeah.

Once I get my next rent check, my first purchase will be the all foil sliver precon.

Got into it again over the summer courtesy of my girlfriend wanting to try it again. Now the crew are into it and I'm itching for some more play.

Unfortunately, I'm stuck on another computer and so don't have video or audio, but in theory I could play via text.

My brother got me into it probably 10 years ago, I love game. Unfortunately I haven't had anyone to play with for the past few years, so I just stopped playing. I've looked at some of the latest cards now and then, and I'm unsure how I feel about some of the new rules and abilities. I suppose I'd need to start playing again to get a good sense of them though.

I'm pretty sure I still have a good deck still lying around somewhere too.

I wonder if you played in the "dark ages" of Magic prior to the Sixth Edition rules changes, they were drastic but they've improved the game to no end. Recent rule changes have also been for the best really, though people do make arguments against Planeswalkers and Mythic Rares but that's another story.

EDH is my format of choice, makes me laugh more than any other game type.

I totally didn't think about playing with forum folks by webcam... hmmm... I might get back into this. There's a nice Magic 2011 starter set.

Not letting this die!

Working on building a blue/black control deck. Problem is that I've never done a control deck before and my only experience seeing one in play is a boxed one I bought ages ago (around the last time I bought any cards).

After whittling down my stack of blue cards to what I thought were the bare essentials, I've got enough cards for a mono blue deck.

Realistically, it could work, but I don't have the cards to search through my library to get what I need to do well. I tend to end up with all counters, all draw, or all creatures. I'd like to temper it with some good old fashioned destructive black, but the more I think about it I want some direct damage red in there to back me up.

I knew this would be a problem. I've always built aggro decks, typically with a thundering mid-range and a crushing final. Doing it the other way 'round is becoming a bit of a trick.

Fun fact: I've never bought a magic card, relying soley on my dad's collection from the early nineties. Burn decks FTW

I got a lot of mine from an older friend who was into it in the mid-/late nineties. Since I haven't bought any cards in like 6 years, I guess my cards are old now too....

On a related note, I started reading the M:tG website and was shocked at how the cards had changed. I think they're kinda ugly now. Apparently I stopped buying just before they did the format change.

Back in the mid-90s, when MTG was running rampant through my elementary school, I was into it for about 5 minutes. I bought a starter deck and two packs of cards. One of the cards was (at the time) the second-rarest card out there. I sold it for $400 to some guy and called it quits while I was ahead.

Having built a Vampire deck myself (I most likely doomed its success by dubbing it "Mr. Sparkle") I would suggest Vampire Nighthawk and Gatekeeper of Malakir, but... this is a Vampire Vixens deck, and those dudes are quite clearly dudes. So it's your call.

So I've been putting together 2 decks so far. I'm only working with 2011 cards until Scars comes out next week and not buying singles. I like collecting ^.^

The first started off as a Blue/White Control/Lifegain but is moving towards Mono Blue Control/Discard. I haven't quite decided where to go with it. My biggest problem with it so far is that I'm lacking some first turn counters so I'm going to be hunting from Unsummon's in my next few packs.

The other I'm constructing is a White/Green Weenie deck which is much easier and a bit more fun to build but seems to have a lot of card advantage problems.

Has anyone looked into the freeware CCG software out there that lets you play over the internet?

From what I gathered it wasn't free. You have to pay for the software and then donate to the coordinating group to be eligible to play in most of the tourneys.

I have the same problem with that as I do with playing in Legacy. They can get pretty much any card they want and so set up ridiculous early turn combos. That's less fun to me.

What I think is actually the most fun is the Booster Draft format. No telling what you're going to get until you open the packs and everybody gets to walk away with some new cards.

I was talking about http://www.magic-league.com/ , but I can't seem to find the information I was referring to anymore. Odd.

Looking through their links, it looks like I was referring to Workstation.

Ah, good old Magic. Been playing since 1997. I'm really excited about playing at States on October 9th.

And EDH is awesome! I'm about to work on my fifth EDH deck. Trying to decide between Slivers or Red/Green Tokens.

I'm also a level 1 DCI judge, in case anyone has a rules question.
