In the latest story, Jace found something in Tamiyo's journal:

"Beside the drawing is another sketch, showing one of the weird, twisted stones I've seen a few times since I've been here. There's a schematic quality to the sketch, and I wonder if the author of this journal is responsible for the stones. There's magic in them, manipulating mana flow."

Stone structures manipulating the flow of mana, eh? Does that remind you of anything? Something like, oh I don't know, hedrons?

Nahiri created the cryptoliths. If we go with the theory that she tried to draw Emrakul to Innistrad, this works. The reason the Eldrazi went to Zendikar at all was because the plane was absolutely teeming with mana, which they're drawn to. If Innistrad's leylines were arranged in such a way as to create an enormous concentration of mana, that would be perfect bait for an Eldrazi titan.

The flavor text of Drownyard Temple is "This is it! All the cryptoliths point here!"

Image

That art looks a lot like somebody wants to get a bunch of mana in one place.

Also, everything about Warped Landscape supports this.

Image

There's Nahiri, the flavor text says the cryptoliths direct the mana "to a singular purpose." I think this is pretty clear.

One other thing that supports that theory is the red vine-like things in the bottom of Warped Landscape look a lot like the emerging tentacles in Ancient Stirrings:

Oh man, you guys, I am LOVING SoI's themeing. Startled Awake/Persistent Nightmare and Uninvited Geist/Unimpeded Trespasser are some of my favorite cards just for the flavoring behind them. Just the Wind and Ever After are really great too for the same reasons. I even kinda want to build a Green deck now, which is weird because I always viewed Green as really boring.

Triskaidekaphobia opponent kill count: 2.5. It would include one more, but my opponent top-decked his mainboard Root Out to blow it up. :(

Triskaidekaphobia self kill count: 0. Though I've had to play around it at least once.

I just found out there is a magic card named Arrogant Wurm this made me laugh because of the Canadian band the Arrogant Worms.

Just got back from FNM.

A few decent B/G picks in the first pack, but everyone was in those colours for at least a bit. So I ended up with a mediocre pile. Lost every. Single. Game. At the high roll for a few foils and promo cards I rolled a friggin' 1.

I did pull Avacyn and the Gitrog Monster from my participation pack. So you know, ups and downs.

Okay, after this weeks Magic Fiction, nothing can tell me it's not Phyrexia messing with Innistrad until I'm told otherwise. too much of what was said in it has an overly Phyrexian sound to it. There's even a reference to Mirrodin in it. It seems like the perfect bait and switch to Emrakul. Both warp minds and matter in a way. Both are unresolved plot points and both have ways they could've come to Innistrad.

Also got a nice reference to Serra's realm, another victim of the Phyrexians back in the day. :)
I loved Tamiyo's magic and POV. Really beautiful writing on this one.

The insect subtheme in the set of infectious stuff that drives you mad does have a Phyrexian flavor to it. And the Hellraiser body horror would fit in on Innistrad. Not sure what their connection would be to Nahiri though.

It's highly possible Nahirir has met Phyrexians before while she was an Old-walker. Or she had at least heard of them. It wouldn't surprise me that she'd use them to ruin Innistrad. She'd hesitate to use Eldrazi because she knows what that does to a place, but she'd happily use something as destructive. The Drownyard Temple could be a portal like the one the Phyrexians used. I want to know what she was going to do when she first arrived on Innistrad though.

So Magic's going to Kaladesh next block, with a new Planeswalker coming.

This has gotten me thinking: How many planeswalkers have we had from each plane? Anyone got a tally before I start doing my manual count?

Alara overall: 2 (Ajani, Tezzeret)
Theros: 2 (Gideon, Xenagos)
Vryn: 1 (Jace)
Dominaria: 6 (Liliana, Nicol Bolas, Venser, Karn, Teferi, Freyalise)
Kamigawa: 1 (Tamiyo)
Mirrodin: 1 (Koth)
Kaladesh: 2 (Chandra, Saheeli)
Tarkir: 3 (Sarkhan, Narset, Ugin)
Innistrad: 3 (Sorin, Tibalt, Arlinn)
Ravnica: 3 (Vraska, Ral Zarek, Domri Rade)
Zendikar: 3 (Nyssa, Kiora, Nahiri)
Fiora: 2 (Dack,Daretti)

Counting only the ones who have received planeswalker cards, or inclusion criteria become tricky.

Planechase Anthologies seems sweet. The fact it has $150 MSRP... less so.

Yep. I'm personally hoping there's someone in my area who just wants the decks, considering I just want the planes and the planar die, and we can come to an arrangement.

So with the Announcement of Kaladesh block and the news that they're doing a long awaited thing that they've finally figured out how to do, some people are think Contraptions might have finally been solved. If they have been and are in this set, I bet my foil Monastery Mentor LRR get either Steamfloger Boss (Who's price has went up a tonne because of speculation), or a card with the Contraption mechanic.

If contraptions are a thing, they'll be an actual mechanic - not necessarily some obscure/jokey card. And I'd be kinda bummed if they gave LRR a reprint to preview.

The preview cards LRR do get have incredibly strong and unique flavour above all else, personally I think it is way too early to be speculating on flavour. I'm just a little concerned for your foil Monastery Mentor here...

Thanks! So, ignoring Dominaria because it's special, it looks like Wizards is going for a maximum of 3 planeswalkers from each plane. So we could potentially have one more Kaladeshi (Kaladeshian? Kardashian? ;-) ) planeswalker, but that's it. And if we're revisiting planes, they may be holding that in reserve for the Return to Kaladesh block.

I just realized my modern deck is more or less Kathleen's "Angry Kitties" deck from Friday Nights.

I'll work on getting a list up later tonight.

Also, we have our legendary werewolf... and it's very boring.

Here's the decklist I was talking about. I guess I was overstating a bit when I mentioned Kathleen's Angry Kitties deck. I just rewatched the first video about Magic and remembered going "T1 Steppe Lynx" and having opponent visibly give up.

Maybe I'm a bad person, but I was really REALLY hoping that if we did get a Legendary werewolf this set, it would be mono red or mono green, because of how much it would tilt out the EDH players...

Yeah I'm a bad person
