DotP 2014

Postby Utilitarian » 26 Jun 2013, 21:12

Thoughts?

The sealed play seems really exciting but only having a limited number of sealed decks you can't delete is lame

I'm trying to get it working on my ipad but while the program works it won't let me buy the full game -_- (has anyone else had/resolved this problem)

Having played the Android version, I'd say it's mediocre at best. It's a great way for new players to learn, don't get me wrong. But the challenges weren't challenging. The sealed deck mode was very easy thanks to the fact I got a ton of removal and card draw.

The main campaign wasn't that hard besides a few cases. And when it gets hard, it gets very hard. Usually because your opponent draws whatever they need while you get mana flooded or screwed. The Revenge mode seems like it'll be even worse for that.

One of the things that's always annoyed me about the series is the disadvantage of using different decks. As you play more with one deck, said deck gets stronger. As the challenges get more difficult, having weaker decks puts you at a disadvantage. Unless the challenge basically calls for a certain type of deck. For example, unless the deck runs very fast or has removal that you draw into, beating the Simic level is pretty hard. Turn 3 Biovisionary. Turn 4, Clone the visionary. Turn 5, put an enchantment that makes a new visionary each turn. Turn 6, win.

Grr... this is really frustrating. Apple support was totally useless and essentially sent me an email that said "welp, the itunes store is working, so it's not our problem, later!" and all the apple forum posts about this issue read as "help I'm getting this message" "well that message says to contact apple support. contact them."

Grr.

Does it still have the thing where the AI always pulls the exact same cards in the exact same order and they're always the best cards it could possibly get while you always end up drawing rubbish? Cos that kind of ruined DotP 2013 for me.

Yea... yea. It does. Encounters make up the bulk of the campaign. There's one that's all about Bloodthirst which drove me nots.

i got the android version and i am not that impressed with it. i assumed it would have online multiplayer like the console versions so it really sucks that it doesn't.

i also dont like how changing the games difficulty seems to affect card draw. i tried that first duel against the chandra deck on planeswalker difficulty and kept losing cos your deck is awful and the AI kept getting insane draws.

i plan to do the campaign on mage to unlock all the decks and cards and then replay it on planeswalker when i have improved the decks.

I was never able to get past the first battle in DotP 2013 on mage mode because the opponent would always draw unsummon-type cards that put my creatures back into my hand every single turn. And this was only the first match of the game so you'd think it would be the easiest.

I guess the argument is that there are few other ways to simulate difficulty in a game like this, but it would have been nice to see something that was reflected in the AI's strategy rather than their draw.

FWIW, playing around with it a bit on the train today, I see some improvements. I like the 'withdraw all' buttons in combat; nice option there. That said, there's some definite framerate issues on the video. I get the feeling this one didn't have as much time in optimization for iPad, which is a shame. More thoughts when I buy the damn thing. Probably after I get paid next. Maybe sooner if my willpower fails.

I had a bunch of crashing issues with the Android version on my phone. It'd be fine up until I won the game. Then it'd tilt the fuck out. It'd just say 'fuck you' and close on me. Oddly, changing to Planeswalker difficulty solved the issue entirely.

Finally got the full version after an annoying day of emails with apple.

Lots of fun so far. My first Sealed pool is junk though. two freaking copies of Diabolic Revelation. ONE is barely usable!

I think I'm going to drop the cash for extra sealed pools though, to be fair I do have 15 bucks credit sitting in my itunes account from a gift card

My only gripe about the game is in sealed you have to be lucky to get something decently good while your opponent's have pretty consistent mono color decks. Just a little bit frustrating. otherwise I enjoy it.

I had fun, blitzed through he campaign using the Avacyn deck as it was generally to fast for most of the encounters to handle (I'd forgotten how good turn 1 Champion of the Parish into turn two gather the townsfolk feels). The challenges were ridiculously easy, the ones in DOTP 13 required you to actually think really hard. The one thing that really bugs me is not being able to assign the damage as the attacker, warning to all the game doesn't understand the interaction of deathtouch and Primeval Hydra, it will assign 1 damage which will not kill the Hydra.

Yeah. I thought I had an awesome red/blue pool, windreader sphinx, the giant dragon that does damage based on the number of dragons you have, a phantasmal dragon and some other stuff, it rated my deck as AWESOME, or something high, and then I couldn't beat Garruk. He just had an answer to anything I did. Over and over again. I finally had to go back to my pool and build an completely different deck, and it still took forever to defeat him.

the whole rating of the deck it provides is just a front. It doesn't really look at your deck just whether if you have things like no more than 2 colors, at least 14 monsters, etc.

Honestly, I'm not even putting any faith into the rating system, I'm just upset that Garruk had an answer for EVERYTHING I did. Even when my deck went off and I had a bunch of good creatures out, Garruk somehow managed to deal with my shit. And I only barely managed to beat him after making the second deck, when I got a really lucky draw and was able to give a creature protection from creatures. I had to make sure never to give that creature flying, either, because he ALWAYS had a Plummet in my other games.

Oh I know. I have the same problem facing Lilliana. For the past three games it was Vampire Nighthawk, followed by bloodshriker bat, sangir vampire. And no matter what I do, she will end up with a bunch of deathtouch creatures and me with no way to get around them.

The revenge mode is absurdly difficult on Planeswalker difficulty. I can't even get past the first encounter because the AI has so much removal at all times. Path to Exile, Fiend Hunters, Oblivion Rings, etc, etc... all while going first turn chapion of the parish turn two gather the townsfolk. turn three my entire hand.

And that's why I hate the games. Opponents' don't always have any answers. Giving the AI all the cards they need does make things harder... but not in a fair way. Difficulty should be a better, or worse, understanding of the rules I think. Maybe better or worse constructed decks. But not how often they have what they need.

For the sealed: I got through it all very easily. But I had so much card draw and removal that it wasn't even fair. Sign in Bloods, murders, that six-drop that gives all creatures -2/0 and kills one, divinations, mind springs... my deck was pretty solid. And even then I lost quite a lot.

Dotp 2013 didn't feel like this. Planeswalker difficulty had them using what cards they drew better, not drawing better cards...

Ummm... I gotta disagree with you there. Every DotP has had this feeling to me. It wasn't quite as blatant as it is here, I'll give you that. But DotP 2013 has the sole honor of making me rage so hard at the AI bullshit 'skill' that I actually started playing THE REAL MUCH MORE EXPENSIVE PHYISICAL CARD GAME INSTEAD. That's seriously one of the main reasons I started playing paper MtG, because people normally don't have all the answers like they did in that game.

EDIT: Wait... *dons tin-foil hat* That's why they did it! To piss off people so much where their only choice if they want to keep playing is playing MtGO or paper MtG, therefore increasing their profits! It's all an evil trick! That's why the video game comes with a code for a pack of cards with a fairly good promo to build around! Mind = Blown.

...I just had the weirdest match in DotP. It was a mirror match. A version of the Eldrazi deck with 1 card unlocked vs the revenge deck. We went down till we had like 20 cards left in our deck. He had an eldrazi and a few other things. I had a bunch of little guys, including 20 spore tokens. I also had 90 life and 23 land. Those two facts are connected.

He was at 25. I was trying to top deck to save my life non-stop at that point. We had the same number of creatures besides the 20 spores I had. And I realized... I could just swing in twice to try to win. So I did, and I won. It was just such a weird match full of ramping and eldrazis. I got a conscription on a 14/14 Primeval Titan, and the one that always has to attack. He had He Who Betrays and another I can't remember. But I managed to pull it out even though he hit me for 60 on the crackback from the first attack since I had two of the lifegain when a land hits early on.

DotP has a habit of doing that. I think at some point on the old one there was a game where both me and the opponent had several hundred life points...

Oh I raged so much against that deck because no matter what I played it would just get removed. I only just beat it with the eldrazi deck by playing all is dust getting all my stuff that was removed via fiend hunter and o-ring. No deck is all removal and threats at the same time. Yea, the Eldrazi deck seems the deck of choice for going through revenge. I've managed to get through most of it with the deck even though I'd never used it before. You have to get lucky, and your opponents can't be amazing as they usually are, but it's not that hard to win. Especially once you get the sac train going.
