My 4th and final RoE draft. I was actually going to stop after 3 to save the rest of my tickets for the M14 prerelease and release, but got bored and thought I guess I can get one more Rise in and still have enough tickets for M14. My greed paid off, I opened Splinter Twin pack 1 and Vengevine (the 2nd in the 4 drafts for me) pack 2 so before playing a turn I had already paid for the draft.

I thought the deck was solid and it performed to that level, winning the first round easy and then losing the 2nd round to a pretty insane green/white umbra deck that was just oozing with synergy.

Looking at that mana base the one thing I can think of about M14 is "man, I might actually be able to make a mono-colored deck again that can actually win!" Of course, that mono deck would almost have to be green, but regardless...

That is a sick pool Hosk, I do mostly drafts, except for release events, so it's rarely an issue for me, but those are some decent cards there. The reason I mostly skip sealed is because the last three times I played, I got such bad cards with basically no way to make a deck, something I almost never feel in draft. I think I had one pool where there weren't even 23 playable cards in any three color group put together, and with only moderate fixing, playing a five color, even in DGM is just a little dangerous.

Made this Gnarly (ge'ddit) deck that won me my 4-3-2-2. Versed the mirror in the finals, but he wasn't gnarly enough.

Just had a very frustrating experience at local store. Had two pods of 7 and 6, which is fine- but then the pods ends up mixed together and it was four rounds.

Drafted G/u in an M14 release draft. Terrible. No removal. Definitely need to take Claustrophobia higher if I do it again.

I did my first M14 draft and decided to try this about 6 picks in and was very happy with what I got.

Image

M1G1 11 land on the table 20+ cards in my deck
M1G2 Milled him out Turn 6
M1G3 12 Land on the table, 16 cards in my deck

M2G1 Milled him out turn 6
M2G2 he out aggroed me turn 6
M2G3 12 land on the table, 19 cards in my deck.

M3 Bye.

My first M14 draft was a fairly good one. 2-1 with a heavy green deck with a few black cards, losing in the finals. Highlights of my deck were what I'm calling the Marshall Special, Triple Doom Blade (1 Doom Blade and 2 Deadly Recluse), as well as triple Advocate of the Beast and triple Rumbling Baloth.

The big issue I ran into was not hitting my 2nd green source in a few games. I could have ran more forests, but with a Quag Sickness and a Nightwing Shade I didn't want to run too few swamps either.

I've had good run so far- 2-1 with BG stuff with some kill spells and big dudes, but it had a pretty bad curve, then 3-0'd with BR kill all the things with a mini intimidate/enchantment subtheme.

Grindy decks should do well in this format. I've also noticed splashing can be quite tough becuase a LOT of the cards you need in any colour are double cost, it seems.

Removal really seems to be at a premium in this set. The removal in colours that have it (R/B) is ok, but not great (barring Doom Blade) and in the other colours is weak or non-existent.

B/R Intimidate worked ok for me as well.

I think removal, if you're in other colours than black or red, probably needs to be a high priority. Which might have been obvious to better players than I.

Hunt the Weak has performed very poorly so far and while it's really the only option Green has, it just seems to leave you very open to blowouts. At the moment I'd run them if needed, but if I can afford to drop them I will.

Blur, Battle and the first striker slivers make a very potent combo. Also, multiple beasts and multiple Advocate of the beasts? As Kenji would say, 'Haha GAME'

Yeah, R/G decks with a random smattering of slivers seem to be one of the few options for going aggro.

Going to try and squeak in a couple others tonight. Maybe one time we should try and fenagel some kind of draft with several LRR members?

For reference (and critique, I'd like others opinions), the two decks I've had so far:

Image

This went 2-1, but I really didn't like it. Outside of Sengir and Behemoth there wasn't anything with the punch to win and the removal wasn't fantastic. The curve wasn't ideal either. (Sickness while heavy green, Hunt the Weak being mediocre)

Image

This 3-0'd, mostly through being able to grind people out with Intimidaters and the large amount of removal. Curve was a bit frustrating and I'm not a big fan of auras, but I think with Intimidate creatures + a lack of solid removal in the set it was worth a try and they did pull some weight. Not sure if Xathrid Necromancer or Bogbrew are optimal here, but wanted to give both a try to see how they'd perform. (Typically, I never got either out!)

After a very disappointing 1-2 Green/White attempt at a Slivers deck earlier today, I 3-0'd my next draft with this deck. I thought I was going to be 3 colors most of the way, but cutting green entirely just seemed much better. I really thought the mana would be a problem with all the double and triple cost cards, but the worst was a couple games that I had to wait a few extra turns. So the Shuffler was smiling on me tonight. MVP was definitely Scourge of Valkas, it's just such a huge threat and using an Ingot to get him in play on turn 4 is just insane, plus the obvious awesome combo with Dragon Egg.

Got a few more drafts in now, currently overall 9-3. I have to admit I am really liking the B/R Sacrifice archetype with Gnawing Zombies, Tenacious Dead, Barrage of Expendables, Altar's Reap, Blood Bairn, Act of Treasons and then padding the rest out with good stuff- couple bombs and removal, then everything else to make it click. It's really good at just grinding people out of the game, although it's natural weakness is sadly any U/x deck it seems, as it just can't handle too many fliers.

I cant wait until M14 rotates into the Phantom pools, I am loving phantom. 4 tickets and I win 1 at least a pack every time and 3 packs about 20-25% of the time. Sell the DGM pack for 2.2 which is ok, but M14 should be over 3 even then, its 3.4 now.

Had three weird drafts in a row. One where I had an amazing deck and got variance'd (Almost won off a Mull to 3 though!) to 0-1. A R/G deck with both Chandra and Garruk but a curve that was awful that went 2-1...and then a very mediocre version of the B/R Sac deck that 3-0'd without a single rare.

Just 3-0'd with this deck, it was a solid deck but nothing super-special. However it proved just how insane Planeswalkers are in Limited, even "not great" ones. Liliana just gets so out of hand if left unchecked. You just keep +1ing her and getting all your swamps and then suddenly you can kill anything they play or just give one of your fliers a massive boost to finish them off. It was also kind of cool to get both Liliana and her Reaver in the same deck and a couple of times out at once.
