Bad Habits

When I have lots of things going on, like a combo going off, or even just a particularly fun card interaction I start explaining how things are going on the stack and I imagine I come off a bit annoying.
I also have a bad habit of explaining other players card interactions in a multiplayer game. For example, if player 1 plays a card, and player 2 asks what the card does, and I know, I'll chime up if player 1 doesn't respond pretty much instantly.
A habit I'm REALLY trying to break though, is occasionally, in a casual match I'll take a peak at the top card of my library, which is just straight up cheating, honestly.

Anyone else have any bad mtg habits?

I tend to not run enough counters in an Izzet deck

A habit I used to have, and I see a lot of players do it, is checking the next few cards when they mulligan.

Either your hand is good enough, and you should keep it, or it wasn't and your should mulligan. Checking the next card can only throw off your decision making. As Graham would say, it will make you results oriented.

I have the habit of explaining interactions and worrying I'm coming off as annoying too. My token/lifegain deck has a ton of cards that trigger when either they or other things enter the battlefield, so I make sure to explain how I'm putting everything on the stack. It's important to do, but I also think it's annoying.

What Korvys said about checking is pretty huge. I've stopped myself from doing it thankfully.

I've also started to do something that incredibly annoyed me when I first started out. Shifting your hand around when you're in the middle of a match, making one sleeve rub against another and creating an annoying 'fffwap' sound.

I tend to keep hands that are "playable" but that I really should mulligan. Learning when to mulligan has taken me a long time.

I keep making my decks bigger than they should be.

I horridly underland my decks.
Don't know how it keeps happening, I know I need a decent amount of lands, but it's so hard to reduce cards I want in the deck in favour for lands (even though I know it's good for the deck's performance).

Mara.

that drives me up the wall that does. had a guy at the GPT do it last week and I tried to explain its a very bad idea. he didn't seem to get the logic.

my worst habit is i take waaay too long figuring out blocks and plays in a really close game. i know you should analyze every angle before deciding but i can go overboard

I try and play too fast for god knows what reason. To seem smart, to act like a pro, or something. But I can't help it.

Conversely, I always play too slow, trying to figure out every angle of several turns in the future before deciding on what to do right now.

I always neglect to keep my tokens with my token deck.
There is always a lot of scrambling for things to use as tokens.
I never, ever learn.

On a lot of occasions I have screwed myself by forgetting about first strike, I look at the table, decide I can attack with a couple extra creatures because they cant profitably block then(plunk) (eat) NOOOOO!

It worse for me with double strike because for some reason I just think of the creatures as double power instead of having first strike and normal strike. "well he just has that 2/1 so I can attack with my 2/2 and it still trade because its really a 4/1" SHOOT!

Same thing with flash, I will see an opponent play out a flash creature like sea kite, then just run right into it with my 2/2s when he has 4 mana open.

Hosk they don't call them combat tricks for nothing eh! That wasn't funny but hey.
When playing Simic I miss counters like a boss mostly because I'm trying to play too fast.

One of my friends has a bad habit of forgetting that two-headed giant turns are shared, so he's usually declared all of his attackers before I've finished formulating a strategy.

My own bad habit is that I often forget about ongoing effects such as Curse Of The Bloody Tome.

I tend to forget my upkeep. I've recently gotten into the habit of mumbling "untap, upkeep, draw" at the beginning of my turns in order to remind myself. This is particularly relevant as I've just built a Thallid deck, and really don't want to forget my spore tokens.

When I started building decks where the upkeep was important, I started chanting "untap, upkeep, draw" as well!

The chant is a good habit. It's the first sign that you're taking the rules seriously.
I know when I started chanting the turn sequence I really started to make big strides towards becoming a good player.

I keep tapping my creatures when I block with them. It's a hard one to break.

I again bring up my friend's bad habits. He casts a non-permanent spell and immediately puts it in his bin from his hand. Not even giving enough time to see the artwork. It's really annoying.

This bugs me occasionally, but really, there isn't a better place to put it. It's not like Duels of the Planeswalkers where the cards float when you play them, and most people don't set aside a "stack-zone" when they sit down to play.

...That's an interesting idea, though. Hmm.

Yeah, I sort of hold it and poke it in the direction of whatever thing it's affecting, and then leave it in my hand until it resolves. This is pretty awkward, though. There's not really a great place, here.

Playmats, people, if they're printed with a "Stack" spot. :)

My playmat doesn't have one. In fact, it doesn't have any designated "spots" marked.

Actually, I have never seen a MTG playmat with any kind of spot marked at all. All the playmats I see are just big mats with nice pictures on them. Sometimes nothing at all.
