I am sadly too cheap to draft twice in one week. I am thinking of doing a phantom sealed at some point, but I have no idea if you'd be interested or have the phantom points.

I might have the phantom points, and would be more interested in that than nothing.

Well, if you can find other people to do a regular draft with you, you should go ahead with that. Otherwise I'm up for the phantom sealed tonight (somewhere around 4-6 PST/7-9 EST works best for me).

I think I'm starting to notice a few flaws about my drafting M.O. - From as early as 3 or 4 cards into the first pack, I was pretty much set that "this is a Temur deck". As a result, I remember seeing some really good value in black and white go sailing past. I guess part of that is that I can't quick pick up signals for when it's early and profitable enough to effectively jump ship. Thus, not wanting to end up with some unplayable 5-colour mess, I tend to cling.

But hey, I managed a halfway decent stack of cards with it and was able to walk away with a solid 1-2. So it could've been worse, I guess.

Round 1 against Serinde was, without exaggeration, some of the most fun back-and-forthing I've played in this game since returning. Game one was pretty solid out of the gate, and we were stalemated for a while. But some... "creative" use of a face-down Monastery Flock and sneaky combat tricks helped open a door for Icefeather Aven to pile on the damage. The second game saw me hold a risky 6 land hand which paid off with lucky draws. I sent Flamerush Rider out to lead the charge, but some timely removals struck him down. And then Dromoka showed up, which promptly ruined my day. Game 3 was much more of a frantic sprint though - I was fortunate to get Bear's Companion out very early, and his bear token absolutely just went to town to secure what I imagine would have been a needlessly gory victory.

Round 2 against dougnap started promisingly - A handful of critters from the shallow end of the mana curve, in conjunction with some much needed buff spells, was enough to claim the game. The second was... not quite so simple. With a similar tactic, my proud weenies were able to secure a strong lead... until some manner of krushok (the exact species escapes me at the moment) completely annihilated my troops and undid most of my progress. Unable to field any adequate resistance, I was swiftly dealt with. Game 3 was a similar story - A few of my early attacks were denied, and although I held steady for a while, an End Hostilities utterly de-clawed my offense. Once more, I was unable to recover and paid the price for it.

Lastly, I got the chance to face off against our esteemed Lord_Hosk To end things out. My deck didn't feel like co-operating for the first game though, and I couldn't really get anything of value out on the field. I scrambled a meagre defense together, but it was nowhere near a match for a Feral Knuckleblade and Hooded Hydra combo. Round 2 was even more dire... a mulligan to 5 cards and only 2 mana was probably something of a hint, and indeed, I only saw one other land after that. Just when defeat seemed inevitable however, I was afforded a small mercy concession, for which I remain deeply grateful. But of course, it didn't amount to too much with the 3rd game - although I finally got my cards to behave themselves to a degree. Ultimately, my pair of impressively beefy creatures were no match for the smaller but more numerous army on the other side of the board. Particularly, since I had nothing to contend with the fliers, the end came gradually, but inevitably.

But the important thing is that it was a fun ride. I finally ran out of tickets from miscellaneous trades, so I'll have to fork out actual money to continue playing... but I fully intend to, and with no regrets. Bring it on.

You also wrecked my joke.

in game three against Omega_Lairon I had out 6 mana and Whisper of the wilds

In hand I had Savage punch and See the Unwritten.

I top decked river wheel aerialists and cast it planning to use the 8 mana off the ferocious whisper to cast both with their own ferocious, but NOOOOOO. Mr wet blanket had to cast Trap essence, yes, TRAP ESSENCE. To counter the riverwheel and stop my super funny joke.

Also here is my deck.

Well, here's my deck from last night. I realized a little too late that I was just drafting based on power and not what my deck actually needed, so I ended up with not enough early creatures to stall the game until I could get those big power creatures out.

For the fun of it, I've started checking that box in settings that keeps track of your draft for you, so I'll paste that into a thing below if anyone's curious.

I am seriously really happy to hear that. I've seen you talk about not winning many matches, so I'm glad you had fun! I definitely did too, despite having terrible luck with my mana. (Game 1 I kept a hand with 2 (low drop) creatures and all my colours, and then flooded. Game 2 I mulled a 6-lander and then a 1-lander, but despite some initial mana screw I managed to claw my way back and win. But game 3 I went to 6, kept a 5-land hand with a 2 drop and then drew NOTHING BUT LAND for 4 turns and couldn't recover. Ouch.)

But like I said, I still had fun! And I had better luck with mana in the other rounds. I'm trying to make myself mull more often, because I don't like to do it but I know I've suffered for it in the past.

I'm too lazy to post my deck, but I opened a Dromoka and then a Noxious Dragon and decided I'd take the Noxious Dragon rather than something cheaper, more sensible, and probably better...because I'm playing with LRR people and why not have fun? And I actually managed to get both dragons on the board at the same time once, so that was fun.

I keep telling myself to look at other colours and not just gravitate to Abzan all the time, but those first two picks already lead me heavily in that direction, and there seemed to be quite a lot of Abzan cards going around, so I did fairly well with it. I just...I really like Abzan, guys. =P

I'm told I tend to ramble, so I'll try to keep it short -

Today's cards:
Image

I had a pretty solid white base through most of it - enough so that I thought I might be able to pull off mono or maybe W/G. A foolish thought, but the fact remains that white was by far my best option. Found enough green and black to make it a solid Abzan though/

I didn't get a complete run-down on draft picks this week, mostly because it slowed me the heck down last time, but I do have the next best thing:

Pack 1 rare: Crucible of the Spirit Dragon
Pick 1: Valorous Stance

Pack 2 rare: Rattleclaw Mystic
Pick 1: Kin-Tree Invocation

Pack 3 rare: Savage Knuckleblade
Pick 1: Savage Knuckleblade (hatedraft, yo)

I felt really good about the synergy I had going on with the deck, and that became apparent early on in the first game against Karnasis - with Abzan Flaconer taking it to the skies in a dominant performance. Game 2 was a little more even. I was able to get out Harold on turn 1, and use him to good advantage, but bad luck with mana prevented me from exploiting the lead to the fullest. Nevertheless, the early creature lead was enough to eke out a win against some potent resistance.

Now I'll be honest, my next match with bainard656 completely tilted me out. Not through fault of my opponent however, but due to a few occasion where I made some hilariously terrible misplays. Missed triggers, wasteful attacks... it was enough to send a sturdy lead crashing down into a humiliating loss. I know I'm still pretty noob-ish at times, but I KNOW I could have played far better than that. That said, from what they played after my few dodgy rounds, they seemed to have more than adequate answers to any of my big threats, so I probably wouldn't have done much better anyway... but still. Game 2 was a similar story - throwing away an early advantage and almost costing myself the game, but I managed to sneak away with it. Sadly, it all came full circle in the third, and I found myself at the mercy of some persistent flying threats I had no answer for.

Fortunately, I was able to pull myself together in time to face Omnicrat to close out the draft. Game 1 seemed to be all one-way traffic, with the brutal combo of Tuskguard Captain and Abzan Falconer combining for a serious air assault. Of course, it wouldn't all be that easy in game 2, where we found our fortunes somewhat reversed. I managed to get Archers Parapet and Kin-Tree Invocation to combo into a decently heavy hitter early in the game, but I couldn't get any good value out of it, and ultimately, I was harassed in the air once more. The final match was a real heart-stopper - Some early removals and not-fantastic draws forced my to throw most of my chips in with a face-down War Behemoth, sporting several of my best buffs. He did well for a while, defensively, but inevitably, the end came for him. Luckily by now, I had built up a respectable meat wall, including the reunion of Abzan Falconer and Tuskguard Captain to seal air dominance. Not that it was that easy - my skilful opponent had been building up an intimidating force of their own, and for a few turns it could have gone either way. The final curtain call came at the hands of an all out assault, aided by a timely Rush of Battle. With a single life point left, I cheekily tapped down Archers Parapet to take the victory.

Final tally: 2-1. Feels weird to be so far away from the old 0-3

So... yeah. Brevity, not my strong suit as it turns out... but a few lines each wouldn't have done justice to what ended up being exciting and tense matches. It was just the thing I needed to wash the bitter taste of my last MtGO experience out of my brain. Loads of fun, and I look forward to... sadly missing a week due to travel, but I'll see you all again the week after for more of the same!

Finally managed to 3-0 a draft in this set!

Whether by luck or finally getting the hang of signals for this format (just in time for it to change), I cobbeled together this:

With each of my opponents, I seemed to play one super long, clock consuming game, and one short bulldozer game against the clock. Not easy on the nerves! Thanks again to my opponents (Elemental Alchemist, Lord Hosk, and Domestic Sleepers), and for those who stopped by to watch the stream.

Uhh, there's probably a better place for this, but I have a quick run-down for today's impromptu "Pot 'O Gold" draft.

The cards

So... I had absolutely no damn clue what I was doing most of the time... which I hear is a common condition for this particular draft. It was especially bad for me though, since I didn't actually know offhand which colours were supposed to be shards or not, so my brain kept filling in the gaps with Khans clan colours. "Oh, you've got a green/red card - that's Temur!", etc. But somehow I fell into a Grixis zombies deck, which I'm told is was a thing, so I ran with that

Of course, it ended in an inevitable, but fun 0-3. *shrug*. I can't be too disappointed with that result going into something completely blind. Frankly, the fact that I won any games at all was better than I expected.

I faced AdmiralMemo in the first round... I don't remember too much of game 1 save for being overrun and generally not having answers. Game 2 was pretty bad too - a hand full of red spells and not a mountain in sight. I did get a moment's reprieve from a spell whose name escapes me at the moment clearing the board... all part of Memo's diabolical plan though, as he was quick to field some very beefy monsters. It was a pretty cool combo though.

I did manage to find my feet against adi_pie for round 2 though - holding out long enough in the first game to pull off a particularly underhanded Cloven Casting / Breath of Malfegor combo for the win. The favour was returned in the second, where my wall of zombie tokens could only look on helplessly as I took a Breath of Malfegor to the face. The last game was pretty fun though, as we found ourselves in a back-and-forth "flunge off". I got close, but fell short at the last hurdle.

My final round opponent ShouAS - better known as EldraziOutlaw, piled on the pressure in game 1, pulling me all the way down to 2 life before I could fight back. Fortunately, I lucked out on a "cascade" combo which reversed our fortunes long enough to claim victory. No such luck for game 2 however, as I was mercilessly beaten with some very angry but well synergised monsters. Lastly, while I was able to draw out my Lich Lord of Unx, and start pooping out zombies reasonably quickly into game 3, it merely meant that the inevitable defeat was a lot more drawn out than necessary, as my opponent's superior numbers gradually chipped away at my life.

All in all though, I had a great time. It was confusing and weird, but I found some strange old cards that were fun to play around with and/or have played against me. It's not quite a substitute for the "proper" fan draft I'll be missing out on this week, but it did well enough.

So what does everyone want to draft this weekend? I don't know if I'll be around due to prerelease action but we've got 3 choices:

1)FKK
2)Rise of Eldrazi
3)Cube

Ooh, triple Eldrazi sounds fun. Never had the chance to do a flashback draft before, other than the holiday wacky drafts.
