Kahns prerelease

I went Justaguy but only got 3 blue creatures, two of which were the 0/3 fetchers.

I ended up running RWB and went 4-1 but didnt make the finals as 3 of my opponents dropped so my tie breakers sucked. I did get to play against another LRR Fan though so that was fun.

3 of my game ones I got terribly mana screwed, I discarded a total of 11 cards.

Nothing really good to speak of, my stand out were my three the sage-eye harrier (1/5 4W flying Morph 3w) with two chief of the edge.

I was really hindered by the avalanche of mana fixing though. I got 9 "life" lands, 4 tri-lands, 4 banners and a foothills. I was really short on playables because of it. 18 mana cards is just too many.

I thought that the banners would be "oh I dont need this anymore I can sack it for draw" but I never had 3 of the colors I would have needed to spare I'm glad I didnt run any. I would typically have 3 of one, 2 or 3 of a second and of and on 1 of the third. I was doing fine for mana but it really would have hurt to try to sack those, way too expensive/difficult.

The best moment was in one of those strange Hushes that sometimes happens. I hear from across the store, "I throttle your monkey" everyone just sorta stopped playing and looked around for a few seconds.

I went Temur. My pool was all over the place, and I ended up in everything but red. I went 3-3, scooping to my opponent to let him get into prizes at the last round. I ended up winning when we did play for fun. My two losses were due to either not getting one of my main colors for most of the game (all the sources of that color ended up being in the bottom 10 cards) and to a misplay against an opponent who kept getting his bombs down early (the dragon throne and Duneblast). So those put me on a bit of a down note. But it happens.

I got the new clone and a Polluted Delta though, so I'm not going to complain honestly. I had fun, opened some value, and overall had a good time. I think it was a fun format.

As a note, here's my deck + pool. I'm curious for feedback on what I should have done differently. The only real thing I noticed was that I should have put the Set Adrift in the deck. I ended up not having enough delve despite getting one of the best Delve enablers (the Sultai Ascendancy).

Here's the deck. And the text version:

Midnight prerelease Abzan deck I called 'Hurdle the Durdle':

Went 3-0-1 with it (1-1-1, 2-0, 2-0, 2-0). Sick play of the night: Turn 7 I swung in with morphed Azban Guide and opponent didn't block, revealed the morph, hit for 4 lifelink damage (8 health swing) and in second main delved away the 5 cards in my yard and played Howling Mandrils for only G.

Sadly I never got to play my Duneblast but Anafenza is a straight HOUSE. (and Outlast with the guys granting abilities to other +1/+1 counter creatures is unreal)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
And at noon I played Mardu and called it 'Just Mardu It' :

Went 3-1 with it (2-1, 2-0, 1-2, 2-0). Lost only to a Jeskai aggro deck that if I had only had two mountains in place of two of my 4 plains I had, could have just wrecked his creatures as I had an Arc Lightning, Mardu Charm, AND Arrow Storm in hand. Those would have either let me swing in with my guys or stalled the board out enough to go to turns (I lost literally at the moment the clock rolled over to 00:00 and Turn 0 started) to take a tie for another 3-0-1. Fun fact: I had such a deep Mardu pool that I could have legitimately played a 60 card Mardu deck and not had much at all in the way of junk filler. It was just THAT good of a RWB pool (I had like 40ish playables). Probably shouldn't have run as many Lifegain Taplands in an aggro strat but oh well...

All in all, I am really liking what I saw from Azban, Mardu, Temur, and Jeskai but not so much with sealed for Sultai. I'd play Azban or Mardu again in a heartbeat. I pulled three fetches in my pools and prizes. I really am thinking as far as MtG goes, Sealed seems to be the format I perform best in.

I went Mardu for the midnight release and holy crap my pool was busted. 2 Mardu charms, promo utter end, 2 ponyback brigades, sarkhan, High sentinels of Arashin, chief of the edge as well as a mountain of 2 drops and removal. I went 3-0 without dropping a game, but the deck pretty much built and played itself.

The closest thing I had to a problem was against Abzan in the finals but I knew that they would be defensive so my strategy against them was to push as much damage through before they got a bored presence. Once he was able to fully clean up my bored he was down to only 4 life which was just enough for me to attack in with Sarkhan and win the match.

Ankle Shanker is stupid good. The fact that was nearly the 'choose your own promo' is just kind of stupid overall. It would have made Mardu too good.

Imagine a card: It's a small Overrun, but it stays around and also grants all your creatures keyword abilities and replaces them with fliers if they die. This rare card costs three mana and it is called Abzan Ascendancy. I opened THREE in my 'normal' packs along with an otherwise also nutty pool.

I didn't realize quite how good I had it until after I drew the first round with a very young person who was playing very slow, but I never dropped a match and ended up splitting the grand prize with the other two top players at 5-0-1.

- Outlasting all game and getting run down to 1 life, my opponent has several ways to kill me on-board next turn. Playing the second Abzan Ascendancy on my team to fly in for an exactly-lethal 22 damage. That one wasn't really planned.

- Last game of the tournament. My opponent starts attacking me with his only creature even though I have a 6/6 lifelink and over fourty life. Playing around Dragonscale Boon for close to ten turns, I eventually dropped down to 3 before dealing exactly lethal with six 1/1 spirit tokens.

Wound up 2-1-1.

The draw was super frustrating, as game one I got my opponent down to 1 life, and then completely flooded out and couldn't close the deal. Eventually ground out a win in game two, but time got called and couldn't finish things. Would really have liked that game back.

Picked Temur for my clan, but wound up in Abzan colours instead. After the event and looking through cards outside of time pressure, I might have been able to make Temur work, but I just had better mana and creature base for WBG, even though I didn't have any of the cool outlast cards, or really enough counter/token generators.

(No, the Sidisi's Pets don't really belong in this deck, but I was pressed for creatures. Unfortunately, I drew them rather regularly, of course ...)

I think my favorite thing from the night was casting the Kin-Tree Invocation and making an 8/8. That was fun.

Can't wait to draft this format. With all of the overlap between the mono-coloured creatures, reading signals is going to be a bear, but with each clan having its own distinct mechanic, there is a lot of flavour and interesting interactions on tap.

I went 2-3 in the afternoon prerelease today. I picked Sultai, and was (I think, at least) rewarded with three Mythics in my pack - Two copies of Sidisi and one of the Temur Khan, Surrak. Wound up running four colours, excluding white.

Overall, my deck played reasonably well. My average CMC was a little too high, and I miscounted when putting lands in initially, resulting in only 15 lands when I had intended 17. I was confused as to why I had two cards fewer than I expected, but didn't think anything of it until after I lost my first round. Thank goodness for continuous deckbuilding rules so I could fix the mistake and not have to start every round with 15 lands in a deck that desperately needed more.

Ultimately, flying creatures were my downfall. I had almost no defense against them, and in game three of round five, they were the deciding factor in my loss. I was so close to getting five packs. =P

Went Temur with a friend who went Mardu for 2HG, and went 2-1-1 (played out the last round anyway and lost, so technically 2-2). Our first two games went exactly as we hoped with Temur playing control while Mardu beats down until both of us can smash face. The last two games had us drawing a lot of land and not much else, and we had a stalled board state in our final game that ended thanks to a Mindswipe on some random spell we cast.

Afterward we played mini masters and man Trail of Mystery is fun. I really want to see that played in Standard somehow with a bunch of random morph cards. Maybe a 5-color deck.

Khans is super fun.

I ended up going 3-2 with Sultai. I was blessed with a splashable Savage Knuckleblade and 2 Incremental Growths (your opponents face when you play the second one, priceless :P). All-Star of the night was Bellowing Saddlebrute. Even if you need to pay the 4 life, he's still totally worth it.

Delve turned out to be a great mechanic, as long as you have some enablers that are playable on their own merits. My rule of only playing delve cards if they are playable with a -2 cost served me pretty well too (Shambeling Servants stayed out of my deck due to this).

In the two I did I went:

4-0 Abzan is redonk when supported. Promo Duneblast paved the way for me in a couple of matches.

2HG went 3-1. Jeskai was of the only boxes left, so I begrudgingly went with them and they didn't go too bad.

Abzan is still my favourite house, esp. with our faux sliver effects.

I went 3-2-1.

I chose Abzan and opened Anafenza, the Foremost in my seeded pack.

Pumped from this I open the rest of my packs to find a Duneblast.

Won 3 games in a row cause of it :)

I just played my first Magic tournament thing ever at the Khans prerelease, and came second! I was playing Mardu, got some very good cards, and won eight games out of twelve.
In the first round, I was facing an Abzan player who played rather slowly; I won the first game, lost the second (he got a third-turn Anafenza and it was all over after that) and the third game went to time; if it'd played out he'd probably have won, again due to Anafenza.
In the second round I went 2-1 against a Jeskai player; he lost the first game due to a lack of mana, I lost the second for much the same reason, and then I won the third.
In round three I won my first game against a Temur player who'd got a paucity of decent greens and flipped to Jeskai; then he sideboarded in some black multicoloureds and proceeded to whup my ass - probably due to the horrible power of the Mantis Rider.
I went 3-0 in match four against a Sultai player who just couldn't keep up with Mardu speed (although with a good showing from Rakshasa Deathdealer!).

Here's the deck list, in no particular order:
Mardu Hateblade x3
Mardu Roughrider
Crackling Doom (I might have done better swapping this with the red thing that does one damage to each creature you don't control, but I didn't have many 4+ creatures to activate the Ferocity effect on that one)
Leaping Master x2
Ponyback Brigade (this saved my ass multiple times)
Rush of Battle x2 (I actually picked up three of these, and they're very powerful - it might have been worth including all three)
Mardu Skullhunter (he's not bad, but I can't help thinking there's better 2/1 creatures for 2 mana. Another Leaping Master, perhaps)
Unyielding Krumar (not that useful; I think I had too many 4-mana black orcs)
Scoured Barrens x2 (useful)
Mardu Hordechief (very useful, particularly in that the token he spawns works with Rush of Battle)
Mer-Ek Nightblade (another 4-mana orc, I didn't get much use out of him)
Mardu Banner x2 (useful)
Mardu Warshrieker (very powerful, I'd have liked more of him!)
Take Up Arms (like the pony brigade, this saved my ass at times; and like the Hordechief, the warriors work well with Rush of Battle)
Nomad Outpost (more mana fixing, what's not to like?)
Gurmag Swiftwing (this little guy did most of the damage my first game, because my opponent couldn't block him. Definitely worth inclusion, though I suspect there's better 2-mana fliers)
Bellowing Saddlebrute (I never had a problem activating Raid for him, and his large size made him worthwhile, unlike the Nightblade or Unyielding Krumar)
Valley Dasher (ehh ... he's ok, the haste is useful, but I lost him a couple of times due to his inability to not attack)
Two (yup, two - I got really lucky!) Sorin, Solemn Visitor (I sucked at keeping him alive, but his +1 ability certainly was useful - thanks to lifelink I got up to 40 life one game!)

I also got really lucky in opening a pair of fetch lands, although neither were in my colours; one Wooded Foothills (red/green) and one foil Flooded Plains (blue/white). I can apparently make back my entry fee and then some! Someone else got a foil Sarkhan, though - that's surely worth a pretty penny!

The lack of tokens was annoying - I ended up drawing stick figures on bits of paper, which was not the most elegant solution.

Overall, I'm pretty happy - I had fun, opened some good cards, and won 2/3rds of my games. :)

Played 2, going 3-1 in both.

Jeskai, Frosty Fliers playing mostly Azorius splashing red for the 2 Efreet Weaponmaster. Pulled no on colour rares beyond the promo but decent uncommons.

I had a nuts Abzan pool with Duneblast, Siege Rhino, Utter End, abzan charm, abzan guide, chief of the scale, High Sentinels, 5 (!) GW refuges and the abzan and sultai trilands and tons of removal. Got ROFLstomped in R4G3 against an equally nuts Mardu deck that I had no hope against, although I'd pulled out a win in G2 after facing down a 3v1 board with 16-1 life. Disappointed that I had the same result with this deck as the previous, had hoped it was 4-0 worthy.

Cool moment: stabilising against the 3/3 double striker and 2/1 outlaster with 3 1/1 counters, expanding my board, pinging the opponent with the archer tower, played around the spellsnatcher then Duneblasted when he was tapped out and swung with my last creature for exactly lethal.

Overall KTK seems pretty good.

I did a second prerelease, I went Azkaban and I wrecked face with it.

in 5 rounds plus 2 "top 8" rounds I lost 2 games.

In round 5 I was the only undefeated player, there were 3 3-0-1's 4 3-1's and 2 2-0-1's (at the top) I ended up against a 3-1 I looked at him and said "if we split you are in the final 8 and I can run to Taco Bell Im really hungry, he said "No, I have to play out and win or I wont make it" I looked at the standings, and said I believe you are wrong but I will play. I proceeded beat his face in game one, and then get into a stall where I was clearly in control game two I swung in for 18 to end the game, but it took so long I couldn't get food. So we went to top 8 without him :(

First round top 8 I said "lets split its late" the second person said "I want to play it out" I got matched against him and won in 6 minutes (taco bell was now closed)

Second round top 8 I said "lets split we are all tired" the second person said "no I want to win lets play, you can drop if you want to" I got matched against him and won game 1 in 4 turns, I won game two in 5 turns.

When the other round ended, the TO who was exhausted said "He finished his last two rounds in less than 25 turns, You guys want to split or play?" the number two guy says "I would have split three rounds ago"

Four pre-releases in all.

1st: Abzan. 3-1.
2nd: Abzan. 3-1
3rd: two headed giant with a friend of mine. Jeskai/Sultai cuz that was all that was left. 2-2.
4th: Abzan. 2-2.

I really really like Abzan. It's everything I want to be doing all the time. Feels good man. Big stuff. Removal. Card draw. Enchantments. Long game. Evasion. Lifegain.

I'm liking this format but i have NO IDEA how it's going to play out in a draft. It's gonna be nuts.

I think people really undervalued the outlast mechanic. There are so many things that put +1/+1 counters on creatures and the cycle of uncommons are so good.

Battle priest- lifelink
Falconer- flying
Bond kin- First strike
Longshot- reach
Nightblade- Deathtouch
Captain- trample

You get any two of those down and your board is pretty unstoppable.

3/4 of my opponents didn't realize that it applied to any creature not just that one, and 1/2 of those that did know it applied always to the board, mistakenly thought that the creature itself had to have the +1/+1 THEN all other creatures got it.

There were several times when I would drop two or three morph creatures, and a face up creature or two, then drop Abzan Ascendancy and one of the outlasts and everything was flying, or firststrike, it COMPLETELY changes the board.

Totally agree Hosk. I had a Longshot Squad in my deck and 2 Incremental Growths, even though I was Sultai and even that was pretty relevant at times. I'm gonna buy the Abzan Intro Pack and just turn it into a deck devoted solely to those global effects.

As a note, some of those (like the FS one) are commons. Which is even more bananas.

Also, Incremental Growth is nutty. I think it was Marshall from LR that called it the 'green Cone of Flame.' (More like Cone of LAME, amirite?) That feels almost right... but I'd honestly say that Growth is even better. Spreading it over your 2/2 for 2, your morph, and your decent last creature (or even an opponents), gives you a 5/5, a 4/4 that unmorphs into something likely better, and another creature that's permanently better. Unless they wipe, they're going to have a hard time dealing with that.

As for myself, I went to another prerelease. Got some friends together and drove for an hour and a half to go to a $20 prerelease with a guarantee of 2 packs per person at least, and then 2 more added to the prize pool. Ended up going 4-0-1 since the last guy needed to start the next prerelease they were having.

I was the last person to pick Temur since they ran out. One of the guys I went with let me pick first, then picked the next pack that I was going to pick. I opened pretty weirdly. Abzan Ascendancy and the 4/5 for 5 that drains for 3, a Flooded Strand, the 6/4 that makes a creature block it, and the equipment that cares about colorless. Overall, I made a pretty aggressive Temur deck. Oh, that friend who got the pack I was going to get? 2 Rugged Mountains and a Windswept Heath, as well as the promo Trail of Mystery I wanted. So that kind of sucked, but was also good, so... I dunno.

First rounds were easy. The players were newer (or at least not great limited players). I helped them retool their decks after beating them. Third round was where it got tougher. Faced off against an opponent who nearly got me, but I managed to beat him.

He headed out, and I overheard how they didn't have enough packs to give out prizes that day, so they were giving out tickets to redeem for packs next week. Well... considering I live an hour and a half away, that doesn't work. I went up and talked to the guy about it. Apparently, they only had 7 packs left, and I found out they were using some of the packs they initially had as prizes to run a 2HG prerelease. By some, I mean about a box's worth at least. In retrospect, I'm kind of pissed off they didn't just run the 2HG with a limit of how many prerelease packs they had left, or just cancel it altogether. I understand they had already advertised it. But the value of packs decreases pretty quickly at release. The people I went with were not happy. It wasn't worth it to drive up, especially considering two of them were only getting two packs anyways.

I ended up winning match 4 against a pretty controlling Jeskai deck. Split the last round. Got first. Only got 12 packs (including the 2 guaranteed). We dealt with the issue by giving me credit for my packs, giving the two guys only getting two their packs from the remaining, and the last guy who went with us (who got 9 packs) 2 right now and 7 in the mail. I only got $3 for credit. While standard, that seems like a bit of a rip-off. Prerelease packs are worth the $4 a piece pretty easily, and to some people are worth more. It's when all the cards in the set are at their highest point for quite a while. So I felt annoyed with how that worked out. But given I was running on about 4 hours of sleep and having played 6 hours of Magic, I wasn't in the mood to get into a whole ordeal. Ended up getting a game a friend wanted in return for him owing me. He gave his two packs (at the $3 value), and I ended up getting one myself from the shop. Pulled a Windswept to make me feel better.

In the end, it was a fun day with a really annoying complication. I'm not mad at the people working at the store, but I'm annoyed with the store itself. They knew how much prize support they were getting. They should have set a cap on events rather than just promise stuff they didn't have.

I went 2-2 both times.

The first time I had a ludicrous Abzan Deck, but didn't notice that I'd accidentally put 23 lands in it.

The second time I was playing Jeskai and I have to say... I'm not really a fan. They have some killer rares, but I felt like the best cards in my deck were the random white Abzan cards that snuck in.

i did ok, went 3-2, i won 3 pacts
i went temur and got surrak dragonclaw as my promo
i built a temur deck that was light on red with a morph theme
trail of mystery gave me the land i needed to both cast my multicolored cards and morph my cards
attacking with a facedown snownorn rider and turn it face up and having it be 7/7 was a big blow out
icefeather aven, force away and crippling chill gave me great tempo
i used savage punch with surrak dragonclaw at least twice
i lost to early big defenders(and keeping a bad hand), and almost mono red aggro

Yup, had Bond kin and night blade out; pretty brutal.

I might do the same thing; my RTR/THS simic deck needs some updating. Abzan hydras, anyone?
