Modern deck - help needed

Postby LokiTheLiar » 23 Dec 2014, 03:15

I wanted to get into Modern for a while now and I've recently bought the Modern Event Deck. I've added some cards from my collection and build this:
Creatures
3 Brimaz, King of Oreskos
2 Hero of Bladehold
2 Burrenton Forge-Tender

Spells
4 Lingering Souls
4 Spectral Procession
4 Path to Exile
2 Doom Blade
4 Zealous Persecution
4 Honor of the Pure
4 Thoughtseize
2 Inquisition of Kozilek

Lands
4 Godless Shrine
2 Marsh Flats
2 Windbrisk Heights
2 Windswept Heath
8 Plains
2 Isolated Chapel
3 Tectonic Edge
1 Swamp

Sideboard
2 Stony Silence
2 Eidolon of Rhetoric
2 Sundering Growth
2 Kor Firewalker
2 Memoricide
1 Runed Halo
2 Rest in Peace
2 Torpor Orb

I want to try it out next Saturday in a tournament at my LGS but I'm not sure if I made right choices while building it. My meta is quite combo heavy, but there are also some powerful "fair" decks and I'm worried that I will get straight rekt if I focus too much on one kind. My experience with Modern is limited to watching coverage and judging at my local tournament, so I would really like someone more experienced in this format to give me some advice on my deck.

Decks that are almost alway in my meta:
1-2 Burn
1-2 UR Delver
1 Affinity
2-3 Valakut Trap
1-2 Scapeshift
1-2 RG Tron
1 Zoo
1-2 Splinter Twin

Decks that may show up (some players alternate between decks listed above and other decks):
Living End
Storm
Infect
GW Hatebears
BW Tokens
BR Discard

Current decks:
Standard - UB Thopter Control
Modern - Death and Taxes

I have played W/b tokens in modern for a couple of years, cards i would recommend is:
1-2 vault of the archangel, both the lifelink and deathtouch is huge in some matchups, like affinity, burn & zoo

Instead of Forge-tender i would play Auriok Champion as they easily can give a lot of life, and with 1 in play twin can only combo with pestermite and with 2 they can't combo win, just don't attack into open mana so they can flash block them.

I would also see if i can find place for a few Intangible Virtue as the vigilance is huge in creature match ups.

I would also switch one doomblade with a Slaughter Pact, because the against creature combo decks who often combo in turn 3-4 where you have to play something on you turn and tap out as most of your deck is sorcery speed, and you have to put a clock on them

As for sideboard this is where this deck can shine as you play black/White you can hate almost every deck out there.
But that depends on the specific versions of the decks in the meta, like is burn the almost all spell version or the creature version, is twin the full on combo version or the more midrange version with goyfs and so on.

But W/b tokens is a great deck with good match-ups against decks like affinity and jund/k. But scapeshift is just about the worst match-up for this deck, it is winnable but it requires luck or misplays from your opponent

I thought about the Vault of Archangel, but I'm afraid that it will be a problem in my manabase since I already have 3 lands producing only colorless mana. Should I swap one Tec Edge for one Vault? I'm worried that it'll make my matchup against Tron and Scapeshift worse because I won't be able to destroy their Urza lands and Valakut.
Auriok Champion and Slaughter Pact seem great, I will buy them as soon as I can.
Burn shows up in my meta in both versions and the Twin decks are mostly the full combo version, only ocasionally the more tempo one.

If you have any more white fetchlands, you should be fine for color fixing while still running some colorless lands. I typically run ~8-9 fetches, though.

If you want to improve your Tron and Scapeshift matchups, you could board in Aven Mindcensor (which stops them from searching with Sylvan Scrying, Expedition Map, and Scapeshift).

Also, one small note with Tec Edge versus Scapeshift: if they're trying to go off and search up Valakut and five Mountains, you need to destroy one of the nonbasic Mountains, not the Valakut, if you want the effect to fizzle.

Yeah, I'll probably try to aquire some more fetchlands.
@steric hinderance I don't have the Mindcensors yet, but I know they're pretty useful in those matchups. Also thanks for reminding me about this tec edge thingy, I almost forgot you can stop scapeshift that way

But unless they are dead on board a competent scapeshift player is never going to go for it if you have a tec edge and they only can find 6 mountains they just waits another turn so they can find a valakut and 7 mountains and then there is nothing you can do

Cifka and Juza played the same main deck. they are both from the Czech Republic and tested together and I can see that the difference in the sideboard is that Juza played 1 relic and 1 dismember instead of the 2 nevermore in Cifka's sideboard.

The latest iteration of my Black/White Lifegain deck. I seem to have got some green on it...

I'm slowly aquiring some cantrips and combat tricks to round it out. I'll probably drop some of the 5-drop creatures to fit them in.
