Standard Pauper Rotisserie Draft - Draft is in session

Postby MowDownJoe » 01 May 2015, 17:11

So, inspired by the recent Friday Nights, I thought it'd be entertaining to organize a Rotisserie draft here on the LRR forums. But first, a few issues that need to be resolved:

  1. How we play. I was thinking XMage, since it is cross-platform and has its own MtGO-style rules engine. However, the default server, Woogerworks... well, there was a meltdown with the guy recently over his selling proxies. Who maintains the LRRcraft server, and would it add too much overhead to add an XMage server so LRR fans can use it for playing Magic against each other?
  2. Who we play. By which I mean how pairings are done. I would not be opposed to using a Challonge bracket. It can automate a lot of things and we can keep it easily visible to everyone.
  3. How we organize when to play. Thankfully, we have these forums. I honestly feel that it'd be best if we do this in a "whenever people are available" fashion for both the draft and the matches. We all have busy lives, after all, and some of us have exams. And we can handle scheduling issues through these forums.

As for why Standard Pauper? Well, Tarkir block only handles 6 people, and I want to do 8. Going into full standard also gives us a lot more room to breathe when it comes to finding a deck.

So, before I do start, I want to poll for interest. I was planning on using a Google Spreadsheet for the draft portion, like with the recent Modern Rotisserie. So the question comes down to how to add people to the edit list for the sheet. Obviously, we'll be working on the honor system (and Google Sheet's revision history) that each of us is only editing our column for our picks. And again, we can take our time drafting since we're all busy people.

So, with all that said, who's in?

[Edit:] Sign-up page on Challonge is now up.

[Edit:] Participants, make sure to check in on the Spreadsheet so you can register your picks! To do that, head to the spreadsheet, click the share button, and click the link labeled "Request access". Let me know your forum handle, and we can get started with the draft.

[edit:] We're off to the races! Brackets for viewing are here, and the sheet is viewable here.

This sounds interesting, and I wonder if I'd be any good at it. I could be in.

I would be interested when very casual people allowed, I do not want to ruin anything if it is competitive

The only thing I ask is that if you sign up, you see this through to the end. I'm fine with participants taking their time, but I'm not fine with people flaking out. Make your picks. Work out a reasonable schedule with your opponents. We'll be fine. If you want to draft something ridiculous and off the wall (Charging Badger aggro?), go for it. If you want to do the CamSaw special, that's okay, too.

So you are not thinking a one day event

That's kind of what the whole "take our time" thing in the first post meant. Not everyone here lives in the same timezone. It'd be unreasonable for me to organize an event that requires a specific day and time. Plus, that's how the recent Modern Rotisserie Draft did it.

interesting, I'm in.

however, if all we need are standard commons we could just use mtgo. commons are worthless and buying your draft picks to make a deck would be cheap.

also, the "draft" part could take up to a month with this system :P

Using a spreadsheet would make the drafting easier.
I set one up if you'd like to use that as a base:

Here's the link

Sorted by color, then alphabetically.

I actually had a spreadsheet ready that went by pick order. But this is also handy.

I updated the sheet, now the the table of cards will automatically show the person who drafted them. Should help. There's a couple of examples in the sheet.

Should we get a rotating email to inform people that their pick is up

I was kind of basing my sheet off of the one used for the Modern Roto.

I haven't checked.. do we have 8 people? Either way, I made a sign-up page on Challonge. Easier than to keep checking this thread. Though the thread would be a good way to ping people to make their next pick.

I am really excited for this, and would love if we could get the additional 3 people we need to fire it. Guys?

Yeah, I thought we had a reasonable amount of interest... But the queue can't fire with 5.

I suggest we continue to develop the system, get the server running or find an alternative, some sort of signaling or tweetbot when picks are made. More people would be interested in a system that is play ready, rather than one struggling at the first hurdles

What kind of time commitment would cause issues for you, Sandringham? Perhaps we can advise based on that. MowDownJoe can correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems as though the Rotisserie draft would require you to commit to a certain period of time during which you can't back out, but no more than a short amount of time (time enough to make your picks when it's your turn, then one match a week / however often we arrange it) at any given point. What would work for you?

I reckon I can probably manage a match a week. Not worried about the drafting section
