Not Magic: the Gathering: You mean there are other TCGs?

Postby RytelCSF » 05 May 2013, 09:05

Nothing against Magic. Magic's a fine game. But it's far from the only TCG in the world, and as I play more than just Magic I felt as though there should be a thread to represent, well... everything else.

Currently, I play Legend of the Five Rings and World of Warcraft TCG, and I've played Pokemon TCG in the past. I don't play any of these games seriously (including Magic) but I feel it's nice to have a deck of a few different games so if someone at the game shop or wherever you play asks "Hey, do you play [X}?" You can say "Yeah, I got a deck," and you can play.

So what about all of you? Does anyone else play non-Magic TCGs? Does anyone have a TCG they enjoy more than Magic? Given Magic's dominance, is this thread a complete waste of time? (Possibly.) I'm curious to find out.

I've tried my hand at the World of Warcraft TCG. It was much fun and there were a few really nice aspects to it (the land system is a lot better than Magic). In the end though I decided I could not play two TCG's and I had to choose.
It wasn't really a contest in the end. Magic is deeper, more interesting (to someone not playing WoW online) and finally a part of my life for more than fifteen years.

It would've been my second choice though.

I used to play NetRunner. It was pretty fun, but it had the problem of nobody else in the world actually played the game. Magi Nation also had the same issue. I've helped run YuGiOh tournaments, but I've never actually played the game.

...Also, yeah, I've played Magic for about 13 years, with a few years' hiatus in the middle. It's hard to get into anything else.

Netrunner is fucking amazing, but it did suffer for bring over complicated.

More than any other game I can think of, Netrunner would benefit from a Magic Online style computer game.

I think Netrunner would work beautifully as an online TCG. I wonder if Wizards still has the rights?

Somebody does, considering there's a relaunched version of it now.

Looking at Wikipedia, I'm guessing either Richard Garfield (the designer of both the old and new versions) or Fantasy Flight (who published the new one) has the rights.

Though there is, apparently, a way to play the original version online.

My friend got netrunner a while ago and we've played a few times, great game. I had missed that it was Fantasy Flight that published since it says Wizards of the Coast on the cards...

Fantasy Flight just did the relaunched LCG version from last year. Wizards did the original TCG in 1996.

I've dabbled with the Pokemon TCG on and off. I like it, but can't really get too involved in it as it hampers my MtG addiction. ;)

Every time they come out with a tcg I buy a bunch of it and either dislike it or it dissappears. Redakai, Naruto etc.

Other than Magic, I have also dabbled in NetRunner, Pokemon, Battle Tech, X-files, and Harry Potter. And while none of them other than Magic stuck, that might be the nerdiest sentence I have ever written.

The main game played at the local game store is L5R, but I still mourn the loss of Vtes. That was a great game.

I got started back in the old Decipher Star Wars TCG. Still have my cards around somewhere. I played a bit of casual Battletech (both minis and the card game) and Yu-Gi-Oh! and Pokemon back in the day. Even did a little dabbling in the Babylon 5 TCG.

A couple years ago a friend and I picked up L5R decks and have been doing our best to try to learn the game ever since (it doesn't help that we don't see each other for months on end). We're decent at it, as far as I can tell, but we've only ever had each other to play against. He's Lion Clan and I'm Mantis.

The only other TCG I've played is Force of Will. In structure it is very similar to magic, but with a few interesting twists. It's still in it's infancy and struggling with balance, and at times the art can be rather over-sexualised anime, but otherwise it is an interesting game - worth a gander.

I honestly don't think I can go back to buying random boosters for games. It's basically a massive scam along the lines of "free" to play games. Also don't think I could ever go back to playing Magic after playing other games and realizing there's so little actual meat or depth to it.

Netrunner's my main tournament game nowadays, looking forward to hitting up some Store Championships in a month or two. So can't wait for Order & Chaos dropping soon, so many ideas for new Weyland decks to mess around with.
