Character Motivations

I am currently working on building a world for a future (as in I will be running the games in the future, not the games take place in the future) D&D game. For part of it I need to compile a list of as many character motivations as I can.

I'm looking for anyone's input into different motivations with two categories.

1. Why a character does what they do, their driving force in most of their big decisions. Try getting as basic as you can, i.e. Revenge for the murder of your parents, and revenge for your best friend betraying you both boil down to simply Revenge.

2. Why a character may choose their specific class. Why does someone grow up and decide "I want to be a Wizard?"

I haven't spent a whole lot of time on this aspect of it, but what I have so far is:
Revenge
Power
Knowledge
