At about ten in the morning, your contact calls you and urgently requests that you meet him at a local cafe. He's very insistent that you come immediately. When you arrive, he takes you into the back room so you can discuss things more privately - except, it's not quite the back room. Stepping across the threshold, you find yourself emerging from a door to a back room in a cafe in Paris and stepping into its bright interior. Outside, you can clearly see the Eiffel Tower in the distance. It appears to be the same time here as it was in your previous location, despite the distance travelled. Each of you perceive that the only occupied table has your contact and the other members of the group already sitting at it - a temporal glitch that corrects itself only as you're instructed to sit. In that moment, everyone sitting at the table appears to stand up and blur in reverse to their actual standing positions, and your contact divides into eight identical forms, one standing next to each member of the group and the remaining acting as the staff of the cafe.

One by one, the clones stepped forward, gathering next to the table and merging together into a single form. He insists that each of you sit, and waits for everyone to comply before speaking in English.

"All of you know why you're here. You have been selected from among all of the people of the world to attempt to restore order and return the right of self-determination." He paused, looking each person in the eye in turn. "You have not met before, yet your fates are inexorably linked. You have been chosen not just for what you are, but for what you have the potential to become. For what you will one day be able to do.

"There will be time for each of you to make your introductions later. For the moment, I must provide you with your first task. We can't afford to start you off slow, so this will be a trial by fire. You will have one week of lead time to prepare before we make our move. At that point, a major redistribution of supplies is set to occur, and during this the majority of this tech cult..." he gestured towards the window, and as if on cue, a small group of enforcers clad in partial body armor walked by. "...will be preoccupied ensuring these supplies reach their destinations. Your job will be to hit one of their local enforcement centers while it is understaffed and attempt to acquire data regarding where they are searching for this ritual site they are so concerned about. Questions?"

Kenji Watanabe was not a morning person. Simply put, in the morning he had the temperament of a vampire with a paper route. So when Shiro, his contact at the Tokyo airport, called him at ten in the morning, he had to sit through a full minute of fluent Japanese cursing before finally being able to get a word in edgewise.

A snarl curled Kenji's lip as he dressed, but it faded into a skeptical eyebrow when he was escorted into the seemingly Parisian cafe. He took a moment to light a cigarette, take a long puff, and tap the ash into the tray in the middle of the table before he spoke.

"You make many assumptions, sir." He spoke in soft, subtly accented English. "One, you assume that I am some manner of zealous freedom fighter, willing to lay down his life for the greater good." He chortled at that, eyes drifting up to lock his gaze with the man. "Two, you assume that I work with others." His gaze flicked to the others sitting at the table. "Three, you assume that I work for free."
It's all over but the crying. And the taxes.

"Perfectionism might look good in his shiny shoes, but he's kind of an asshole and no one invites him to their pool parties."

"...well didn't someone invite Captain fookin' Serious"

A broad Scottish accent splits the slightly tense silence following Kenji's statement. Its originator is a wiry young man with short, dirty blond hair, lounging at the far end of the table in a gray hoodie. He wears a half-grin that might be construed as mocking by some, and seems entirely unfazed by the bizarre unreality of the situation.

A brief and awkward silence fills the room in response to the Glaswegian's outburst. Neither the Japanese man nor their newly-met contact averted their eyes from one another, and yet somehow both seemed to shoot a warning glare in his direction. The grin in his face didn't fade, but flickered slightly.

After a moment, the contact shook his head.

"If you hadn't agreed to help, you would not be here. If you have changed your mind, you are welcome to leave. I don't believe you'll find it easy to return to your usual line of work, however."

He paused, looking at each person in turn. "Now, any concerns relating to the job at hand?"

Kenji did not take kindly to being condescended to. Or to thinly veiled threats. Not to mention he could barely understand what the Scotsman was saying. He idly thought that this must've been what the Greeks were talking about when they described barbarians.

"Very well," he said coolly, leaning back in his chair and holding up a hand to tick off points on his fingers. "Where is the enforcement center? Is it in an urban area? Will it be operating at the time of the strike? You say it is understaffed, but what precisely does that mean? Do you have blueprints? Security assessments?"

He smiled thinly and steepled his fingers. Smoke drifted between his lips as he took another puff. "Or, perhaps, all of that is on us."
It's all over but the crying. And the taxes.

"Perfectionism might look good in his shiny shoes, but he's kind of an asshole and no one invites him to their pool parties."

Already bored with the way conversation has turned, the wiry Scot takes a slender knife from his pocket and begins idly playing with it. The gentle click of blade hitting holster cracks through the room every few seconds.

"The enforcement center we're targeting is in a small town that had a minimal contingent to begin with. Local reaction to this occupying force has been generally positive, which has only encouraged the enforcers to relax. They're based out of a small sheriff's office. There are normally five, working in shifts, with an additional eight robots for support. We anticipate that only two people and four robots will be present during this resorting. We do not have blueprints, but eyewitness accounts state that the building has three cells, all located off the main office room, with the sheriff's personal office, an interrogation room, and a bathroom making up the rest of the building. They have no reason to anticipate you, and we have no reason to believe they will be adequately prepared to react to your arrival."

The contact stopped, watching the Scotsman fidget with his blade.

"Any further questions?"

Robert Fitzgerald had been analyzing the situation (and his new compatriots) the whole time. A young man with short, unkempt brown hair in blue genes and a black graphic tee with the words "Is someone doing science in here?" printed on the front, ones first thought about his appearance would not be "attractive." If one were to look into his eyes, however, they could see the brilliance of his mind always shining in them. While it was clear from his body language that he disproved of the Japanese fellow's mercenary attitude, he did not speak up.

Once he understood the basics of the situation, he asked his questions (he comes across as wooden to those listening)

"Are these their typical robots? Do they have remote access potential? Do the people on duty wear anything more than standard gear? Is there any risk of civilian casualties? What resources can I ha- [glaces around at his compatriots, blushes a bit, then returns to his spit-fire of questions] can we have provided to us to solve this problem? Is their any risk that we will be recognized and our loved ones will face reprisal?"

"There are no civilians in a war like this one," Kenji said coolly, his mercenary attitude slipping for a moment. He flicked the butt of his cigarette into what may or may not have been a Parisian street. "There are sympathizers and there are allies."

His expression never wavered, but there was a different, subtle tone to his voice. "Dr. Fitzgerald, I presume? You would do well to send your loved ones on a nice vacation to somewhere isolated. Perhaps Easter Island. Or Toronto."
It's all over but the crying. And the taxes.

The contact glanced at Kenji with a raised eyebrow before responding to Robert's questions.

"These are their typical robots, yes, though I doubt you've worked on anything this sophisticated. Their AI allows them to be fully autonomous. Their full combat potential is unknown, aside from the fact that they have short range energy weapons. They have some form of jet propulsion unit that allows them to fly, though they have only been seen using this to travel long distances. It is unknown if they have remote access potential."

He cleared his throat, then pushed out his chair enough to allow one of his copies to stand up out of his body. The copy collected a tray of glasses and a pitcher of water from the counter and set them on the table before sitting back into the contact, who poured himself a glass and took a drink.

"The people on duty should be expected to be armed and wearing at least partial body armor. We do not anticipate the presence of any powered armor units. In regards to civilian casualties -" He paused, eyeing Kenji again "- that is entirely dependent on your approach. You will be arriving at night, and the building is not located in a residential area. It is reasonable to think that you will be able to complete this mission without unnecessary injury or property damage."

"In regards to resources, we have a facility and an assistant we can place at your disposal while you prepare for this mission. Generally speaking, I suspect your cohorts are largely set, but if they require anything, we can make the appropriate arrangements."

"The risk of recognition should be minimal; we have taken steps to ensure that you are well off the radar of those outside. We recommend that you do not advise your family to travel right now, however. Sudden decisions to cross borders may draw unwanted attention."

"Does anyone have any specific material or supply requests?"

At this the Scot perks up, slipping the knife back into it's holster.

"If there's stash afoot, then ah could do with a decent chib or two. This'n's a skinny bastad bit t'ain't gon' do much in a strabash wi' some braw robit"

He pauses a moment

"Mebbe a duster too now ah'm thinkin' offit"

Kenji frowned and leaned over to whisper to Dr. Fitzgerald. "I'm confused. I thought the Scottish spoke English?"

Kenji grunted in recognition and lit another cigarette. "I must say, I did not expect to learn a third language. How much do you think we could pay him to say, 'Dammit, Jim, I'm a doctor not a miracle worker?'"

He stood from the table, buttoning his suit jacket again. "Everything I need is in my apartment back in Tokyo."

Kenji turned to the Scotsman with an arched eyebrow, hand raising to adjust his tie an invisible inch. "I am merely saying that I cannot understand a damn word you are saying, my good man." But what their contact said gave him pause, and he leaned forward over the table, leaning on his hands as he observed the man closely.

"Well, that's interesting. Why don't you want me to go home, sir? My dwelling is discreet, rented under an assumed name, and hidden in a labyrinth of skyscrapers into which I cannot be followed. Do you mean to tell me that these technocrats have the means to spy on me even then?"
It's all over but the crying. And the taxes.

"My comment was directed at Douglas," the contact said, gesturing to the Scotsman, "but yes, technically, without our protection from their surveillance systems, they have the capability of tracking any individual anywhere on the globe."

"Since it seems we're itching for action already, I suppose we should get started." The contact stood, dividing into eight duplicates once more. "In one week, you will meet me at the same location you met me today. From there, you will be taken directly to the operation point, so you will need to be prepared."

One of the duplicates stepped next to Kenji. "Since you have everything you need already, let's head out." He gestured towards the door leading to the cafe's back room. Other duplicates took up position next to Robert and Dougie, while the rest returned to tending the cafe.

Dougie manipulates his lanky limbs upright and rubs his hands together

The duplicate nearest to Dougie gestured towards the same door. "Right this way. You'll find our transportation system is most efficient."

Kenji nodded, spinning on his heel and walking purposefully toward the door.

"I'd also love to know how the duplication trick works and where I can get one."

Kenji had a notoriously dry sense of humor.

The duplicate appeared to miss the joke as it worked to keep stride with Kenji. "We have yet to be able to produce specific abilities in individuals. So far, all we can do is evoke and enhance dormant potential."

On passing through the door, you find yourself back in the cafe you had departed from. No one present seems to have noticed you, and the clock on the wall suggests that about five minutes have passed since you were last here. The duplicate has vanished, but your pocket feels noticeably heavier. Checking its contents would reveal the sudden appearance of four bars of pure gold, each one ounce in weight and bearing no distinguishing markings. They are wrapped in a note that reads "Since payment seems so important to you, we hope this will cover your expenses."
